All university students should be required to take basic science courses even if it is not the field of their study.
Most universities, nowadays, require students to take basic science courses like advanced math and computer science regardless of the fields students major in responding to the call that the education minister advocates to promote all-round education. However, many students feel suffering for this policy and complain that it isn’t necessary for all students to take useless courses. From my standpoint, all university students should be required to take basic science sources even if not the field of study.
Above all, basic science will help all students with the improvement of sensitivity to number, geometry, graph and logic. There is a western story about an artist who majored in art design course during university. Unexpectedly, he once had a chance to listen to a lecture about math which shed a light on him about the inner connection of the beauty of math and art design. Surprisingly, soon after that, he created a creative art product with the combination of geometry and art. Therefore, basic science can hide in lots of subjects and always have inner connections with unrelated things.
In addition, basic science courses can benefit all students on their science theoretical knowledge. In other words, laying a solid knowledge base for subject-related students and enhancing the analytical ability for all students. Actually, basic science can improve transformation ability from a abstract problem to a concrete problem, which is necessary and useful for students long-term development. By learning basic science, students can gradually learn how to seize the core of a problem thus solving it smoothly.
However, requiring all university students to take basic science courses may reduce the time they focus on their main subjects, making them not concentrate on required courses. What’s worse, some students may therefore do badly in the subjects which they major in, the loss outweighing the gain.
In conclusion, from the angle of long-term benefits for most students, basic science courses should add to the daily courses of students. Both students and professors in university need to explore the further meaning of basic science course and how to apply it into the future life or work. I believe that the significance is lasting and great.
