Dear Tom,
Simon’s Problem
My name is Simon. I am a Grade 9 student and I am crazy about football. I love watching football, reading about football, and of course, playing football. However, my love of football has become a big problem now. I'd like your advice. I always play football with my friends at school or in the park after school. We like staying out late to play football. Very often, we play for three hours and we just forget when to stop. My parents don't like this and ask me to come home before 6 p.m. I really don't understand why they are so strict. I feel stressed and angry from time to time. I believe it is important for us to spend some time on our hobbies. This can help us relax and make our lives colorful. I wish I could have my parents' support. Is it bad to stay out late to play football? Should I spend less time on it? I really don't know what to do. Can you offer me some suggestions? They would be most valuable. Thanks a lot. Best wishes Simon

Let’s read
People often ask me for suggestions about how to learn English. Everyone's different, of course, but I thought I'd share some of my experiences. I once took one semester of second-year English in Peking University, but I mostly learned English on my own. One thing I can tell is that, once you’ve started learning, you should try to think in English as much as you can. When you’re riding your bike, or walking down the street, just think about “how would I say them in English?” At first, it will be with simple words or phrases, but later you should be thinking about bigger phrases and sentences. Now when I'm in America, for the most time, I just think in English, and speak it directly. It’s amazing how much this helps. For several years after I started learning, I was often afraid of trying to speak English with others because I didn’t want to make mistakes. Finally I got it over . And while traveling in America, I’d try to hang out with friends who spoke no Chinese, so I’d have no choice but to use English. And I decided that if I said something stupid and other people laughed, so be it. My English started improving more quickly after that.
