Early Writing & Elizabethan Drama
Early Writing
Book of Kells Beowulf Middle Ages
Much early British writing was concerned with Christianity:AngloSaxon produced beautifully illusteated versions of the Bible:the most famous of these is the Book of Kells. It is today kept in the library of Trinity College in Dublin, the capital of Ireland.
• William Shakespeare (1564-1616) is probably the best-known literary figure in the world, but little is known of his life. He excels in each kind .His four famous tragedies are: Hamlet, Othello, King Lear , and Macbeth; comedies are : A Mid Summer Night's Dream, The Merchant of Venice, Twelfth Night, As You Like It ; History plays include Richard Ⅱ ,Richard Ⅲ , HenryⅣ,HenryⅤ etc.
The legend of King Arthur became established in literary form with the publication in 1138 of Geoffrey of Monmouth's History of the Kings of Britain,a Latin work which, though calling itself a work of history, invented material to fill the broad gaps in the historial records. The stories of King Arthur's court, his knights and their famous round table, are mostly inventions around a few vague "facts".Locations mentioned in the legends such as the ruined castle at Tintagle in Cornwall are popular tourist destinations.
• Marlowe(1564-1593) was the earliest of this great trio, and his style is thought to rhaBaidu Nhomakorabeae been a great influence on Skakespeare. His most famous play is The Tragical History of Dr Faustus .《福德博士》.

Elizabethan Drama
• Introduction • Christopher Marlowe • William Shakespeare
There was a great flowering of cultural and intellectual life in Europe during the 15th and 16th centuries which is known as "The Renaissance" In British culture one of the most successful and long-lasting expressions of this development lay in drama . Theren were many notable playwrights, including Christopher Marlowe, Ben Jonson, and,of course William Shakespeare.
Geoffrey Chaucer was born in London. His name was of French origin and meant shoemaker. Chaucer was the son of a prosperous wine merchant and deputy to the kings's butler, and his wife Agnes. Geoffrey Chaucer(1343-1400) Little is known of his early education, but his works show that he could read French, Latin, and Italian.
With the Norman Conquest in 1066 Britain rimsentered the Middle Ages(1066-1485), and the language of the royal court became French. Literature in that period was written in French or Latin. But one work from these times often studied today is The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer(1343-1400). It is written in a more recognizable version of English(known as "Middle English")than Beowulf, made up of a series of stories told by pilgrims, and is notable for its diversity both in the range of social types amongst the 31 pilgrims, and the range in style of the stories they tell.
British literature (that dating from before the 16th centuray), is little read outside of university literature departments, because iit's too difficult. But there are a few wellknown ones from these early"Old English" literature works. The most famous one should be the long poem-Beowulf. The poem tells the story of the Sweden hero Beowulf ,who died in the act of killing a fire dragon that is menacing his people. He is the spiritual symbol of that time,so to speak.
