Read the passages and choose the best answer to each question. Then, mark your answer by blackening the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet. The card catalog is an alphabetical file that normally contains at least three 3 ×5 inch cards for every book in the library collection: an author card, a title card and subject card. The same information is included on each of these three cards. The only difference is that the author’s name is at the top of the author card, the title is added at the top of the title card, and the subject is added at the top of the subject card. The author card usually contains the author’s full name, the year of his birth and the year of his death, if he is no longer living. If you do not know the author’s name, but you have the title, you will be able to locate the book by using the title card. The subject card is identical to the author card and the title card except that the subject of the book appears on the top line in black capitals or in red letters. The card catalog may not contain the exact subject heading you have in mind. Consequently, you will need to be resourceful in your search. If, for example, you are interested in the problems of child labor during the industrial revolution in England, it may be necessary to look under such headings as the following to find the information you need: industrial revolution; England--industrial revolution; child labor; employment--children; labor--child; factory system.1.The meaning of the underlined word “identical” is ______.A.just the oppositeB.a bad imitationC.just the sameD.a different size正确答案:C解析:第二段。

Automatic dishwashers have been around for more than 100 years. It started in 1886 with Josephine Cochrane, a woman in Shelbyville, Illinois. She was a rich woman who could afford servants to wash her dishes, so she really didn't mind the work. What she did mind was that her servants broke the dishes. She hosted quite a few dinner parties, and after every party the servants broke more of her expensive dishes. Finally, Cochrane took action. First, she measured her dishes and bent wire into racks to hold them. Next, she put the racks on a wheel in a large copper boiler. Then, the boiler sprayed hot, soapy water on the dishes as a motor turned the wheel. After a hot water rinse(冲洗), the dishes were clean!Josephine Cochrane's friends were impressed with the machine and asked her to build more. After that, word got out fast. Soon hotel and restaurant owners who didn't like broken dishes also were interested. Cochrane then knew that she had a wonderful machine, so she received a patent from the government, which said that only the inventor can make money from an invention. Then in 1893 Chicago held a World's Fair where inventions from all over the world were shown. Cochrane's labor-saving machine was a big hit. Her dishwasher won the highest award.Cochrane's company came out with a smaller machine in 1914. It was supposed to be for the ordinary home, but it wasn't an immediate success. Many homes couldn't produce the extremely hot water it needed. Also, in most homes, dishwashing wasn't considered very difficult compared to most other housework. In fact some people liked to relax at the sink after a hard day! Sales of the home model finally picked up in the 1950s when people had more money and wanted to have more time to enjoy themselves. Now many homes have electric dishwashers that aren't very different from the one Josephine Cochrane invented more than 100 years ago.(1)Why did Josephine Cochrane invent the dishwasher?A.To reduce the number of servants.B.To avoid possible damage to the dishes.C.To host more dinner parties.D.To make the dishes cleaner.(2)What does the underlined words in Paragraph 3 suggest?A.The machine wasn't as efficient as described.B.Josephine Cochrane could no longer keep it a secret.C.Josephine's friends soon began to talk about the new machine.D.The invention drew immediate attention of the public.(3)The smaller machine became popular only when_____.A.people's living conditions improvedB.hot water was not neededC.housework became easierD.people had more relaxing jobs(4)Compared with Cochrane's invention, modern electric dishwashers _____.A.cost less moneyB.are quite differentC.wash many other thingsD.are much the same【答案】(1)B(2)D(3)A(4)D【解析】【分析】本文是一篇说明文,介绍了自动洗碗机的历史由来。

You can see a sea turtle named Herman, an octopus ( 章鱼) called Octavia, and a seal named Lidia at the Smithsonian's National Zoo in Washington, D.C. Rather than real animals, they are actually artworks made out of plastic trash from the ocean. These artworks are part of a traveling exhibit called "Washed Ashore: Art to Save the Sea". The Washed Ashore project, led by the artist called Pozzi, works to raise awareness about plastic pollution in Earth's oceans.More than 315 billion pounds of plastic litter the world's oceans today. Most of the plastic is garbage from towns and cities, as well as trash that people leave on beaches. Rainwater, winds, and high tides bring the trash into the ocean or into rivers that lead to the ocean. Once it is under the waves, the plastic begins to break up into smaller and smaller pieces.Thousands of sea animals die each year from eating plastic bags and other things. Each year, millions more pounds of plastic end up in the ocean. A recent study found that if that continues, by 2050 the total weight of plastic will be more than that of all the fish in the ocean. The Washed Ashore project is working to stop that from happening. Since 2010, Washed Ashore volunteers have collected 38,000 pounds of plastic trash from more than 300 miles of beaches.

Students who rely on working at night to improve their grades might want to sleep on that strategy:A new survey in the US says those who never study all night have slightly higher grades than those who do.
A survey of 120 students at St. Lawrence University found that students who had never pulled an allnighter on average had higher grades than those who had.The survey found those who did not study through the night had a grade point average of 3.2 compared to 2.95 for those who did. The study,by assistant professor of psychology Pamela Thacher,is to be included in the January issue of Behavioral Sleep Medicine.
“It’s not a big difference, but it’s pretty striking,”Thacher said, “I am primarily a sleep researcher and I know nobody thinks clearly at 4∶00 in the morning. You think you can do,but you can’t.”
Many college students,of course, have inadequate or irregular sleep, for reasons ranging from excessive caffeine to poor time management.
“A lot of students were under the impression that all-nighters were a very useful tool for accomplishing work, and that caffeine intake was very useful in meeting deadlines and stuff like that,” said Mr Chatani, who had a 3.4 grade point
average last term.
Dr Howard Weiss,a physician at St. Peter’s Sleep Center in Albany, said the study results made sense. “Certainly that data is out there showing that short sleep duration absolutely interferes with concentration and performance on objective testing,” he said.
“Some night owls do get good grades,of course, which may be explained by circadian(昼夜节律的,生理节奏的)rhythms,” Weiss said, “Some people have different 24hour body clocks from others, and may do better depending on classes and testing time.”
1.The purpose of the passage is to tell us ________.
A.the bad effects of pulling an allnighter
B.pulling an allnighter leads to sleep problems
C.Thacher’s doubt about all nighters
D.all nighters influence students’ grades
2.According to Thacher’s study,around 4 o’clock i n the morning is a time when _________.
A.one can think more clearly
B.one has his/her best memory
C.one can’t learn efficiently
D.one’s brain falls into a period of deep sleep
3.What can we know from Dr Howard Weiss’s words?
A.Thacher’s study is not convincing enough.
B.He believes in Thacher’s study.
C.Thacher’s study makes no sense.
D.Thacher should take exceptions into consideration.
4.An allnighter in the passage refers to _____________.
A.a habit of accomplishing work by skipping a whole night’s sleep
B.a drink to keep people awake all night
C.a person who falls into the habit of working at night
D.a way to improve one’s grade by working deep into the night
