Every Sunday, when the big ships were returning, my father would say the same words: 1.“如果我的弟弟在那条船上,那将是一个多大的惊喜啊!”
I had heard about my uncle Jules since childhood. Before he was sent to America, he wasted a lot of money in our poor family. Then according to the custom, he was sent off to America on a ship going from my hometown Havre to New York. After that, my uncle began to sell something, and he soon wrote that he was making plenty of money. This letter suddenly became the only hope of our family. Two years later a second letter from my uncle came, saying: “My dear elder brother, I am writing to tell you that my business is better than before. 2.I am leaving tomorrow for a long journey to South America. When I make enough money, I will return to Havre.” The letter was shown to everybody by my parents. As time went on, my father's hope grew bigger and bigger. 3.And every Sunday, my father insisted on watching the big returning ships. Jules is still the main topic of our family.
Years past, after my elder sister's wedding(婚礼), 4.my whole family decided to spend a vacation to a little island in England. On the ship, my father noticed two well-dressed ladies enjoying oysters(牡蛎). 5.一个老人正小心翼翼地为她们服务。My father decided to have some. Then my father walked to the old man to ask for oysters. But suddenly, my father came back worriedly and told my mum the most terrible news in their world—the poor old man was my uncle Jules. From then on, no one in my family even mentioned Jules any more.
