Their chief use for delight, is in privateness and retiring; for ornament, is in discourse; and for ability, is in the judgment, and disposition of business. For expert men can execute, and perhaps judge of particulars, one by one; but the general counsels, and the plots and marshalling of affairs, come best, from those that are learned. To spend too much time in studies is sloth; to use them too much for ornament, is affectation; to make judgment wholly by their rules, is the humor of a scholar. They perfect nature, and are perfected by experience: for natural abilities are like natural plants, that need proyning, by study; and studies themselves, do give forth directions too much at large, except they be bounded in by experience. Crafty men contemn studies, simple men admire them, and wise men use them; for they teach not their own use; but that is a wisdom without them, and above them, won by observation. Read not to contradict and confute; nor to believe and take for granted; nor to find talk and discourse; but to weigh and consider. Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested; that is, some books are to be read only in parts; others to be read, but not curiously; and some few to be read wholly, and with diligence and attention. Some books also may be read by deputy, and extracts made of them bothers; but that would be only in the lessimportant arguments, and the meaner sort of books, else distilled books are like common distilled waters, flashy things.Reading make a full man; conference a ready man; and writing an exact man. And therefore, if a man write little, he had need have a great memory; if he confer little, he had need have a present wit: and if he read little, he had need have much cunning, to seem to know, that he doth not. Histories make men wise; poets witty; the mathematics subtitle; natural philosophy deep; moral grave; logic and rhetoric able to contend.读书足以怡情,足以博彩,足以长才。

My friend and proud father Bobby Lewis was taking his two little boys to play miniature golf. He walked up to the fellow at the ticket counter and said, "How much is it to get in?"这是奥克拉荷马城的一个晴朗的星期六下午。

我的朋友巴比·路易斯,一位令人敬佩的父亲,带着他的两个小儿子去玩迷你高尔夫。

他走向售票处,向售票员问道:“进去需要花多少钱?”The young man replied, "$3.00 for you and $3.00 for any kid who is older than six. We let them in free if they are six or younger. How old are they?"那个年轻人回答道:“你,3美元;6岁以上的儿童,3美元。

6岁以下的儿童免费。

他们多大了?”Bobby replied, "The lawyer's three and the doctor is seven, so I guess I owe you $6.00."巴比回答:“律师,3岁;医生,7岁。

所以我想我应该付给你6美元。

”The man at the ticket counter said, "Hey, Mister, did you just win the lottery or something? You could have saved yourself three bucks. You could have told me that the older one was six; I wouldn't have known the difference." Bobby replied, "Yes,that may be true, but the kids would have known the difference."那个售票的说:“嘿,先生,你是刚赢了彩票还是怎么了?你本可以省下3美元的。

英文短篇美文赏析作文初中英文:As a middle school student, I have read many short English articles. One of my favorites is "The Gift of the Magi" by O. Henry. This story tells the tale of a young couple who are very much in love but have no money to buy each other Christmas presents. The wife has beautiful long hair, which she decides to sell to buy her husband a chain for his pocket watch. Meanwhile, the husband sells his watch to buy his wife a set of combs for her hair. This story has a very touching ending, where the couple realizes that their love for each other is the greatestgift of all. The story is not only heartwarming, but it also teaches us about the true meaning of giving and sacrifice.Another short English article that I enjoyed is "The Tortoise and the Hare" by Aesop. This fable tells the storyof a hare who boasts about his speed and challenges a tortoise to a race. The hare is so confident in hisabilities that he takes a nap during the race, while the tortoise continues to plod along. In the end, the tortoise wins the race because he never gives up and keeps moving forward. This fable teaches us about the importance of perseverance and hard work. It also reminds us that we should never underestimate our opponents, no matter how small or slow they may seem.中文:作为一名初中生,我已经读过很多篇英语短文。

However, more often than not, once you arrive " there" you will still feel dissatisfied, and move your " there" vision to yet another point in the future. By always chasing after another "there," you are never really appreciating what you already have right "here." It is important for human beings to keep soberminded about the age-old drive to look beyond the place where you now stand. On one hand, your life is enhanced by your dreams and aspirations. On the other hand, these drives can pull you farther and farther from your enjoyment of yourlife right now. By learning the lessons of gratitude and abundance, you can bring yourself closer to fulfilling the challenge of livingin the present.许多人都相信,一旦他们达到了自己所设定的某个特定目标,他们就会开心、快乐。

Take the lot of the happiest—it is a tangled yarn(纱线). Bereavements and blessings, one following anther, make us sad and blessed by turns. Even death itself makes life more loving. Men come closest to their true selves in the sober moments of life, under the shadows of sorrow and loss.In the affairs of life or of business, it is not intellect that tells so much as character, not brains so much as heart, not genius so much as self-control, patience, and discipline, regulated by judgment.I have always believe that the man who has begun to live more seriously within begins to live more simply without. In an age of extravagance and waste(铺张浪费), I wish I could show to the world how few the real wants of humanity are.To regret one's errors to the point of not repeating them is true repentance(悔改). There is nothing noble in being superior to some other man. The true nobility is in being superior to your previous self.中学生英语美文:You can do anythingIf anyone tries to tell you that you can't work hard enough to face the task in front of you--show them that you're tough. If anyone tries to tell you that you are not that strong, don'tlisten to discouragement--know that you belong. If anyone tries to tell you that you can't sing your own song, or make your way in the world...prove them wrong.Everyone gets an angel... You can't always see them because sometimes they are invisible.Sometimes they are your pet when he kisses you...Sometimes they are a small treasure you find... an angel might even be your friend. Those angels are quiet, but what they are really saying is: "pink clouds! A good day is just around the corner."So, if you begin to worry too much, just remember...Somewhere an angel is looking out for you, too.中学生英语美文:Today is a giftTwo men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room. One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon to help drain the fluid from his lungs. His bed was next to the room's only window. The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back. The men talked for hours on end. They spoke of their wives and families, their homes, their jobs, their involvement in the military service, where they had been on vacation. And every afternoon when the man in the bed by the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window. The man in the other bed began to live for those one-hour periods where his world would be broadened and enlivened(使活泼) by all the activity and color of the world outside. The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake. Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats. Young lovers walked arm in arm amidst flowers of every color of the rainbow. Grand old trees graced the landscape, and a fineview of the city skyline could be seen in the distance. As the man by the window described all this in exquisite detail, the man on the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine the picturesque scene. One warm afternoon the man by the window described a parade passing by. Although the other man couldn't hear the band - he could see it in his mind's eye as the gentleman by the window portrayed it with descriptive words.Days and weeks passed. One morning, the day nurse arrived to bring water for their baths only to find the lifeless body of the man by the window, who had died peacefully in his sleep. She was saddened and called the hospital attendants to take the body away.As soon as it seemed appropriate, the other man asked if he could be moved next to the window. The nurse was happy to make the switch, and after making sure he was comfortable, she left him alone. Slowly and painfully, he propped himself up on one elbow to take his first look at the world outside. Finally, he would have the joy of seeing it for himself. He strained to slowly turn to look out the window beside the bed. It faced a blank wall. The man asked the nurse what could have compelled his deceased roommate who had described such wonderful things outside this window. The nurse responded that the man was blind and could not even see the wall. She said, "Perhaps he just wanted to encourage you."。

英语美文赏析篇1The big rocks大石块One day an expert in time management was speaking to a group of business students and, to drive home a point, used an illustration those students will never forget. As he stood in front of the group of high-powered over-achievers he said, "Okay, time for a quiz.” Then hepulled out a one-gallon, wide-mouthed Mason jar and set it on the table in front of him. He then produced about a dozen fist-sized rocks and carefully placed them, one at a time, into the jar. When the jar was filled to the top and no more rocks would fit inside, he asked, "Is the jar full?" Everyone in the class said, "Yes."一天,一名时间管理专家在对一群学习商业的学生讲话时,为了论证一个论点,他用了一个令学生们永远难忘的表述方式。

本文是初中英语美文,希望对大家有帮助!初中英语美文:The science of loveScientists are finding that, after all, love really is down to a chemical addiction between people.OVER the course of history it has been artists, poets and playwrights(剧作家) who have made the greatest progress in humanity's understanding of love. Romance has seemed as inexplicable(费解的) as the beauty of a rainbow. But these days scientists are challenging that notion, and they have rather a lot to say about how and why people love each other. Is this useful? The scientists think so. For a start, understanding the neurochemical pathways that regulate social attachments may help to deal with defects in people's ability to form relationships. All relationships, whether they are those of parents with their children, spouses with their partners, or workers with their colleagues, rely on an ability to create and maintain social ties. Defects can be disabling, and become apparent as disorders such as autism and schizophrenia(精神分裂症) —and, indeed, as the serious depression that can result from rejection in love. Research is also shedding light on some of the more extreme forms of sexual behaviour. And, controversially, some utopian(乌托邦的) fringe groups see such work as the doorway to a future where love is guaranteed because it will be provided chemically, or even genetically engineered from conception. The scientific tale of love begins innocently enough, withvoles. The prairie vole(野鼠) is a sociable creature, one of the only 3% of mammal species that appear to form monogamous(一夫一妻的) relationships. Mating between prairie voles is a tremendous 24-hour effort. After this, they bond for life. They prefer to spend time with each other, groom each other for hours on end and nest together. They avoid meeting other potential mates. The male becomes an aggressive guard of the female. And when their pups are born, they become affectionate(深情的) and attentive parents. However, another vole, a close relative called the montane vole, has no interest in partnership beyond one-night-stand sex. What is intriguing is that these vast differences in behaviour are the result of a mere handful of genes. The two vole species are more than 99% alike, genetically.初中英语美文:How to Live BeautifullyIn my newspaper column some months ago, I reprinted a short essay on youth by Samuel Ullman, an author unknown to me. Then I got a call from Ullman's great-grandson, Richard Ullman Rosenfield, a psychologist. He told me that he had been intrigued(好奇的) with the "spiritual journey" of the essay, especially in Japan.Gen. Douglas MacArthur, I learned, often quoted Ullman's "Youth" essay and kept a framed copy over his desk throughout the Pacific campaign. It's believed that the Japanese picked up the work from his Tokyo headquarters.Unlikely as it may sound, this essay, written more than 70 years ago, is the underpinning of much Japanese productivity and the basis of many businessmen's life philosophies. Many carry creased(有折痕的) copies in their wallets."Anyone worth his salt in Japanese business knows and uses this essay," says one longtime Japan observer, "It is our Popeye'sspinach(菠菜) ," said Tatsuro Ishida, who was deputy chairman of Fujisankei Communications Group."It touches me at the core of my heart," says Kokichi Hagiwara, the 67-year-old chairman of Japanese/American-owned National Steel in Pittsburgh. "This kind of enthusiasm is indispensable, We must have the spirit of youth to make change."Some Japanese leaders see the essay as a bridge between the two cultures, If Westerners can understand Japanese reverence(崇敬) for it, maybe they can better understand the Japanese businessman's quest for spiritual sustenance in the midst of material abundance. When one of Ullman's grandsons, Jonas Rosenfield, Jr., was having dinner in Japan a few years ago, "Youth" came up in conversation, Rosenfield told his dinner companion, a Japanese business leader, that the author was his grandfather. The news was staggering."'You are the grandson of Samuel Ullman?' he kept repeating," says Rosenfield, head of the American Film Marketing Association. "He couldn't get over it."Then the executive pulled a copy of "Youth" from his pocket and told Rosenfield, "I carry it with me always."Three years ago, several hundred top businessmen and government leaders gathered in Tokyo and Osaka to celebrate their admiration of Ullman's essay. Testimonials abounded, including one from Konosuke Matsushita, founder of the Panasonic Company, who said "Youth" has been his motto for 20 years.Someone asked, "Why don't Americans love the essay as much as we do? It sends a message about how to live beautifully to men and women, old and young alike."Samuel Ullman was born in 1840 in Germany and came to American as a boy. He fought in the U.S, Civil War and settled in Birmingham, Alabama. He was a hardware merchant with a penchant(嗜好,倾向) for public service that continues 67 years after his death, In the last few years more than $36,000 from Japanese royalties on a book and a cassette reading of his work has gone to a University of Alabama at Birmingham scholarship fund, Not bad for a man who started writing in his 70s.初中英语美文:The wisdom of one wordIsn't it amazing how one person, sharing one idea, at the right time and place can change the course of your life's history? This is certainly what happened in my life. When I was 14, I was hitchhiking from Houston, T exas, through El Paso on my way to California. I was following my dream, journeying with the sun. I was a high school dropout with learning disabilities and was set on surfing the biggest waves in the world, first in California and then in Hawaii, where I would later live.Upon reaching downtown El Paso, I met an old man, a bum(流浪汉) , on the street corner. He saw me walking, stopped me and questioned me as I passed by. He asked me if I was running away from home, I suppose because I looked so young.I told him, "Not exactly, sir," since my father had given me a ride to the freeway in Houston and given me his blessings while saying, "It is important to follow your dream and what is in your heart. Son. "The bum then asked me if he could buy me a cup of coffee.I told him, "No, sir, but a soda would be great." We walked to a corner malt(麦芽酒) shop and sat down on a couple of swiveling stools while we enjoyed our drinks. After conversing for a few minutes, the friendly bum told me to follow him. He told me that he had something grand to show me and share with me. We walked a couple of blocks until we came upon the downtown El Paso Public Library. We walked up its front steps and stopped at a small information stand. Here the bum spoke to a smiling old lady, and asked her if she would be kind enough to watch my things for a moment while he and I entered the library. I left my belongings with this grandmotherly figure and entered into this magnificent hall of learning. The bum first led me to a table and asked me to sit down and wait for a moment while he looked for something special amongst the shelves. A few moments later, he returned with a couple of old books under his arms and set them on the table. He then sat down beside me and spoke. He started with a few statements that were very special and that changed my life. He said, "There are two things that I want to teach you, young man, and they are these:"Number one is to never judge a book by its cover, for a cover can fool you. "He followed with, "I ll bet you think I m a bum, don't you, young man?"I said, "Well, uh, yes, I guess so, sir. ""Well, young man, I ve got a little surprise for you. I am one of the wealthiest men in the world. I have probably everything any man could ever want. I originally come from the Northeast and have all the things that money can buy. But a year ago, my wife passed away, bless her soul, and since then I have been deeply reflecting upon life. I realized there were certain things I had not yet experienced in life, one of which was what it would be like to live like a bum on the streets. I made a commitment tomyself to do exactly that for one year. For the past year. I have been going from city to city doing just that. So, you see, don t ever judge a book by its cover, for a cover can fool you."Number two is to learn how to read, my boy. For there is only one thing that people can t take away from you, and that is your wisdom. " At that moment, he reached forward, grabbed my right hand in his and put them upon the books he d pulled from the shelves. They were the writings of Plato and Aristotle-immortal classics from ancient times. The bum then led me back past the smiling old woman near the entrance, down the steps and back on the streets near where we first met. His parting request was for me to never forget what he taught me.I haven't.。

英文短篇美文赏析作文初中英文:I have always been a fan of short stories, especially those that are written in a simple yet profound way. One of my favorite short stories is "The Gift of the Magi" by O. Henry. This story tells the tale of a young couple, Jim and Della, who are struggling to make ends meet during the Christmas season. Despite their financial hardships, they both want to give each other a special gift for Christmas.Della decides to sell her most prized possession, her long, beautiful hair, in order to buy Jim a chain for his pocket watch. Meanwhile, Jim sells his pocket watch to buy Della a set of combs for her hair. On Christmas Eve, they exchange their gifts, only to realize that they have both sacrificed their most valuable possessions for each other. This story is a beautiful example of the power of love and sacrifice. It reminds us that the true value of a giftis not in its material worth, but in the thought and love behind it. It also teaches us that sometimes, the greatest gift we can give to someone is ourselves.中文:我一直都是短篇小说的粉丝,尤其是那些简单而又深刻的故事。

I missed her terribly.I was told I was her favorite grandchild; she was my favorite “Granny.” She was my Father’s mother. Two years later my mother and father separated and they were soon divorced. I felt as if my world was falling apart. My heart ached for that part of me that was slipping away. Mother must have sensed my longing, for she would take my little brother and me back to visit my Granny on occasions, even after the divorce.I was always aware Granny loved us. It was something you could feel with your heart, even when your world was turned upside down. She didn’t live in a fancy house or have expensive things, but I never noticed; I just knew she loved me and I loved her back.We had lived, for a time, next door to her and grandpa in a duplex while my father was away during World War II.Granny had never had very much in the way of money or material things. But it was the little things she gave me that had always mattered. Things like letting me dip my fingers in the sugar bowl, which was always sitting on her table or the coffee she let me sip from her cup. She allowed me to sit on top of herkitchen table as I partook of those privileges.Granny took the time to explain the function of her weather vane, hanging on the wall, which predicted the upcoming weather. How that little wooden boy and girl knew what door to come out of, when it was going to rain, amazed me. But Granny understood. She also had a vinegar cruet that sat high on a shelf that was beautiful, in my eyes; I asked if I could have it someday. It was given to me in a box after her funeral. She remembered; love is like that.I used to spend a lot of time with Granny when we lived in Cairo, next door to her and grandpa, in the duplex. But times and things had changed. Grandpa had died; we lived a hundred miles away, and dad, her youngest son, my daddy, no longer lived with us. I didn’t get to see dad much, and I don’t know if Granny got to see him very often either. But, he was her son, and I knew she loved him. Love is like that; it can see past the pain.Though she didn’t have much, neither did we, but she did something for my brother, Tommie and me. I will always remember; she saved her pennies in a glass jar. I am sure Granny could have used those pennies herself but she saved them to give us when we came to visit. Because I was the oldest I was in charge of dividing the pennies equally between my brother and me.“One for you, one for me,” I would repeat until the jar was empty.I don’t remember how much we collected on our visits, nor was the amount important. It was the idea that she remembered us, and cared about us, when we were away from her. Those memories, of when I was a child, still give me warm fuzzy feelings on days that I need them. A Granny’s love stayswith a grandchild, down through the years, even when that child becomes a grandma herself. I often wonder, after all those years, when I am lucky enough to find a penny lying on the ground somewhere, if it could possible be Granny tossing me pennies from heaven.八岁的时候,我们一家从开罗搬到了伊利诺斯州的弗农山,从此远离了祖母。

下面是店铺整理的初一经典英语美文,欢迎阅读!初一经典英语美文篇一The art of livingWhat is it like to be old in the United States? What will our own lives be like when we are old? Americans find it difficult to think about old age until they are propelled into the midst of it by their own aging and that of relatives and friends. Aging is the neglected stepchild of the human life cycle. Though we have begun to examine the socially taboo subjects of dying and death, we have leaped over that long period of time preceding death known as old age. In truth, it is easier to manage the problems of death than the problem of living as an old person. Death is a dramatic, one-time crisis while old age is a day-by-day and year-by-year confrontation with powerful external forces, a bittersweet coming to terms with one's own personality and one's life.Old age is neither inherently miserable nor inherently sublime-like every stage of life it has problems, joys, fears and potentials. The process of aging and eventual death must ultimately be accepted as the natural progression of the life cycle, the old completing their prescribed life spans and making way for the young. Much that is unique in old age in fact derives from the reality of aging and the imminence of death. The old must clarify and find use for what they have attained in a lifetime of learning and adapting they must conserve strength andresources where necessary and adjust creatively to those changes and losses that occur as part of the aging experience. The elderly have the potential for qualities of human reflection and observation which can only come from having lived an entire life span. There is a lifetime accumulation of personality and experience which is available to be used and enjoyed. But what are an individual's chances for a "good" old age in America, with satisfying final years and a dignified death? Unfortunately , none too good. For many elderly Americans old age is a tragedy, a period of quiet despair, deprivation , desolation and muted rage. This can be a consequence of the kind of life a person has led in younger years and the problems in his or her relationships with others. There are also inevitable personal and physical losses to be sustained, some of which can become overwhelming and unbearable. All of this is the individual factor, the existential element. But old age is frequently a tragedy even when the early years have been fulfilling and people seemingly have everything going for them. Herein lies what I consider to be the genuine tragedy of old age in America -- we have shaped a society which is extremely harsh to live in when one is old. The tragedy of old age is not the fact that each of us must grow old and die but that the process of doing so has been made unnecessarily and at times excruciatingly painful, humiliating, debilitating and isolating through insensitivity, ignorance and poverty. The potentials for satisfactions and even triumphs in late life are real and vastly under explored. For the most part the elderly struggle to exist in an inhospitable world. 初一经典英语美文篇二Living a solitary lifeThe other day an acquaintance of mine, a gregarious andcharming man, told me he had found himself unexpectedly alone in New York for an hour or two between appointments. He went to the Whitney and spent the "empty" time looking at things in solitary bliss. For him it proved to be a shock nearly as great as falling in love to discover that he could enjoy himself so much alone. What had he been afraid of, I asked myself? That, suddenly alone, he would discover that he bored himself, or that there was, quite simply, no self there to meet? But having taken the plunge, he is now on the brink of adventure; he is about to be launched into his own inner space to the astronaut. His every perception will come to him with a new freshness and, for a time, seem startlingly original. For anyone who can see things for himself with a naked eye becomes, for a moment or two, something of a genius. With another human being present vision becomes double vision, inevitably. We are busy wondering, what does my companion see or think of this, and what do I think of it? The original impact gets lost, or diffused."Music I heard with you was more than music." Exactly. And therefore music itself can only be heard alone. Solitude is the salt of personhood. It brings out the authentic flavor of every experience."Alone one is never lonely: the spirit adventures, walking in a quiet garden, in a cool house, abiding single there."Loneliness is most acutely felt with other people, for with others, even with a lover sometimes, we suffer from our differences of taste, temperament, mood. Human intercourse often demands that we soften the edge of perception, or withdraw at the very instant of personal truth for fear of hurting,or of being inappropriately present, which is to say naked, in a social situation. Alone we can afford to be wholly whatever we are, and to feel whatever we feel absolutely. That is a great luxury! For me the most interesting thing about a solitary life, and mine has been that for the last twenty years, is that it becomes increasingly rewarding. When I can wake up and watch the sun rise over the ocean, as I do most days, and know that I have an entire day ahead, uninterrupted, in which to write a few pages, take a walk with my dog, lie down in the afternoon for a long think (why does one think better in a horizontal position?), read and listen to music, I am flooded with happiness.I'm lonely only when I am overtired, when I have worked too long without a break, when from the time being I feel empty and need filling up. And I am lonely sometimes when I come back home after a lecture trip, when I have seen a lot of people and talked a lot, and am full to the brim with experience that needs to be sorted out. Then for a little while the house feels huge and empty, and I wonder where my self is hiding. It has to be recaptured slowly by watering the plants and perhaps,by looking again at each one as though it were a person. It takes a while, as I watch the surf blowing up in fountains at the end of the field, but the moment comes when the world falls away, and the self emerges again from the deep unconscious, bringing back all I have recently experienced to be explored and slowly understood, when I can converse again with my hidden powers, and so grow, and so be renewed, till death do us part. 初一经典英语美文篇三The tragedy of old ageWhat is it like to be old in the United States? What will ourown lives be like when we are old? The old must clarify and find use for what they have attained in a lifetime of learning and adapting they must conserve strength and resources where necessary and adjust creatively to those changes and losses that occur as part of the aging experience. For many elderly Americans oldage is a tragedy, a period of quiet despair, deprivation , desolation and muted rage. 店铺整理了初中优秀英语美文,欢迎阅读!初中优秀英语美文:Human Life a Poem 人生如诗I think that, from a biological standpoint, human life almost reads like a poem. It has its own rhythm and beat, its internal cycles of growth and decay. It begins with innocent childhood, followed by awkward adolescence trying awkwardly to adapt itself to mature society, with its young passions and follies, its ideals and ambitions; then it reaches a manhood of intense activities, profiting from experience and learning more about society and human nature; at middle age, there is a slight easing of tension, a mellowing of character like the ripening of fruit or the mellowing of good wine, and the gradual acquiring of a more tolerant, more cynical and at the same time a kindlier view of life; then In the sunset of our life, the endocrine glands decrease their activity, and if we have a true philosophy of old age and have ordered our life pattern according to it, it is for us the age of peace and security and leisure and contentment; finally, life flickers out and one goes into eternal sleep, never to wake up again. One should be able to sense the beauty of this rhythm of life, to appreciate, as we do in grand symphonies, its main theme, its strains of conflict and the final resolution. The movements ofthese cycles are very much the same in a normal life, but the music must be provided by the individual himself. In some souls, the discordant note becomes harsher and harsher and finally overwhelms or submerges the main melody. Sometimes the discordant note gains so much power that the music can no longer go on, and the individual shoots himself with a pistol or jump into a river. But that is because his original leitmotif has been hopelessly over-showed through the lack of a good self-education. Otherwise the normal human life runs to its normal end in kind of dignified movement and procession. There are sometimes in many of us too many staccatos or impetuosos, and because the tempo is wrong, the music is not pleasing to the ear; we might have more of the grand rhythm and majestic tempo o the Ganges, flowing slowly and eternally into the sea.No one can say that life with childhood, manhood and old age is not a beautiful arrangement; the day has its morning, noon and sunset, and the year has its seasons, and it is good that it is so. There is no good or bad in life, except what is good according to its own season. And if we take this biological view of life and try to live according to the seasons, no one but a conceited fool or an impossible idealist can deny that human life can be lived like a poem. Shakespeare has expressed this idea more graphically in his passage about the seven stages of life, and a good many Chinese writers have said about the same thing. It is curious that Shakespeare was never very religious, or very much concerned with religion. I think this was his greatness; he took human life largely as it was, and intruded himself as little upon the general scheme of things as he did upon the characters of his plays. Shakespeare was like Nature itself, and that is the greatest compliment we can pay to a writer or thinker. He merely lived, observed life and went away.初中优秀英语美文:Relish the Moment 品味现在Tucked away in our subconsciousness is an idyllic vision. We see ourselves on a long trip that spans the moment. We are traveling by train. Out the windows, we drink in the passing scene of cars on nearby highways, of children waving at a crossing, of cattle grazing on a distant hillside, of smoke pouring from a power plant, of row upon row of corn ad wheat, of flatlands and valleys, of mountains and rolling hillsides, of city skylines and village halls. But uppermost in our minds is the final destination. On a certain day at a certain hour, we will pull into the station. Bands will be playing and flags waving. Once we get there, so many wonderful dreams will come true and the pieces of our lives will fit together like a completed jigsaw puzzle. How restlessly we pace the aisles, damning the minutes for loitering---waiting, waiting, waiting for the station.“When we reach the station, that will be it!” we cry. “When I'm 18.” “When I buy a new 450SL Mercedes Benz!” “When I put the last kid through college.” “When I have paid off the mortgage!” “When I get a promotion.” “When I reach the age of retirement, I shall live happily ever after!”Sooner or later, we must realize there is no station, no one place to arrive at once and for all. The true joy of life is the trip. The station is only a dream. It constantly outdistances us.It isn't the burdens of today that drive men mad. It is the regrets over yesterday and the fear of tomorrow. Regret and fear are twin thieves who rob us of today. So stop pacing the aisles and counting the miles. Instead, climb more mountains, eat more ice cream, go barefoot moreoften, swim more rivers, watch more sunsets, laugh more, cry less. Life must be lived as we go along. The station will come soon enough.初中优秀英语美文:Abundance is a Life Style 富足的生活方式Abundance is a life style, a way of living your life. It isn't something you buy now and then or pull down from the cupboard, dust off and use once or twice, and then return to the cupboard.Abundance is a philosophy; it appears in your physiology, your value system, and carries its own set of beliefs. You walk with it, sleep with it, bath with it, feel with it, and need to maintain and take care of it as well.Abundance doesn't always require money. Many people live with all that money can buy yet live empty inside. Abundance begins inside with some main self-ingredients, like love, care, kindness and gentleness, thoughtfulness and compassion. Abundance is a state of being. It radiates outward. It shines like the sun among the many moons in the world.Being from the brightness of abundance doesn't allow the darkness to appear or be in the path unless a choice to allow it to. The true state of abundance doesn't have room for lies or games normally played. The space is too full of abundance. This may be a challenge because we still need to shine for other to see.Abundance is seeing people for their gifts and not what they lack or could be. Seeing all things for their gifts and not what they lack.Start by knowing what your abundances are, fill that space with you, and be fully present from that state of being. Your profession of choice is telling you of knowing and possibilities. That is their gift. Consultants and customer service professionals have the ministrative assistants and virtual assistants have an abundance of coordination and time management. Abundance is all around you, and all within. See what it is; love yourself for what it is, not what you're missing, or what that can be better, but for what it is at this present moment.Be in a state of abundance of what you already have. I guarantee they are there; it always is buried but there. Breathe them in as if they are the air you breathe because they are yours. Let go of anything that isn't abundant for the time being. Name the shoe boxes in your closet with your gifts of abundance; pull from them every morning if needed. Know they are there.Learning to trust in your own abundance is required. When you begin to be within your own space of abundance, whatever you need will appear whenever you need it. That's just the way the higher powers set this universe up to work. Trust the universal energy. The knowing of it all will humble you to its power yet let the brightness of you shine everywhere it needs to. Just by being from a state of abundance, it is being you.。

知识梳理与例句:天文学家首次拍到黑洞Astronomers have taken the first ever photograph of a black hole. It is located in a far, distant galaxy called M87, which is 500 million trillion km from Earth. That gargantuan number is a five followed by twenty zeroes. Scientists estimate the black hole to have a diameter of 40billion km and to be three million times larger than our planet.》Lead astronomer Professor Heino Falcke spoke to the BBC about the black hole. He said: What we see is larger than the size of our entire Solar System. It has a mass billion times that of the Sun.And it is one of the heaviest black holes that we think exists. It is an absolute monster - the heavyweight champion of black holes in the Universe. The imageof the black hole was captured by an array of eight linked telescopes called the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT).No single telescope exists that is powerful enough to capture the image. Each of the EHT telescopes is located high upon volcanoes in Hawaii and Mexico, mountains in the USA and Spain, a desert in Chile, and in Antarctica.A team of 200 scientists pointed the networked telescopes towards the M87 galaxy and scanned it over a period of 10days. The data they gathered was stored ·on hundreds of hard drives. It was then collated and processed to produce the image that is now a landmark in space exploration. Professor Sheperd Doeleman called it an extraordinary scientific feat.催熟奶酪的最佳音乐Scientists have discovered a bizarre link between music and cheese. Different genr es of music affect the way cheesematures. A top Swiss cheese-maker and a team ofresearchers from Switzerland's Bern University conducted a six-month test to look into the effect music had on the maturation process of Emmental cheese. After the cheese had matured, it was sampled and assessed by the researchers and a jury of ,culinary cheese experts. The researchers found that cheese that had been played hip-hop had a strong er aroma and flavor than the other cheese aficionados reached the same conclusion as the researchers - the hip-hop cheese was the tastiest. The experiment involved exposing different cheeses to a 24-hour, non-stop musical loop. A music player directed sound waves at the cheese for six months. The experiment was titled Cheese in Surround Sound. The music included Mozart's The Magic Flute, Led Zeppelins rock classic Stairway to Heaven, and A Tribe Called Quest's hip-hop tune Jazz (We've Got).)A researcher explained the differences in taste. He said: Bacteria are responsible for the formation of the taste of cheese, wit hthe enzymes that influence its maturity. Iam convinced that humidity, temperatureor nutrients are not the only things that influence taste.Sounds, ultrasounds or music can also have physical effects.纸质书更适合做睡前读物The march of technology may seem unstoppable, but all things digital may】have a way to go before they replace the traditional bedtime book - thepaper one.A new study shows that paper books are better than e-books for bedtime reading. The study suggests that the good old printed book, with real pages that you tu rn with your fingers, makes parents and children interact more than they do when reading with an electronic book.Researchers from the University of Michigan studied how 37 pairs of parents and toddlers interacted with e-books and paper books. The researchers found that with electronic books, parents asked their children fewer questions and made fewercomments about the story.:The study involved observing parents and children aged two or three reading from three different book formats. These were printed books, basic e-books on a tablet, and enhanced e-books with features such as animation, graphics and sound effects. The researchers discovered that the parents and toddlers interacted with each other less with both types of e-books than they did with the printed books. A researcher said that when they did speak, they were far likelier to talk about thedevice and the technology rather than about the story.Children were likelier to say things like, don't push that button or don't chang e the volume than ask questions or make observations about the story."缓解全球变暖新方法Scientists have come up with a revolutionary new idea to save planet Earth from global warming. Geo-engineers from Harvard University believe that spraying sun-dimming chemicals into the stratosphere high above the Earth could slowdown global warming. They also say their technique would be remarkably inexpensive, costing in the region of $ billion a year over a 15-year period. The technique is known as stratospheric aerosol injection (SAI). It is still in its infancy and is yet to be proven. It would involve the use of gigantic hoses or high-powered chemical cannons …to spray chemicals into the stratosphere to act as a reflective barrier against sunlight and harmful UV rays. The scientists have admitted that their idea is currently still in the planning stages. They said: We make no judgment about the desirability of SAI. We simply show that a hypothetical deployment program commencing 15 years hence, while both highly uncertain and ambitious, would indeed be technically possible from an engineering perspective. Not all scientists think the idea is a good one. Some think it is somewhat pie in the sky. They say it would require a fleet of 100 specially-designed planes to make 4,0 00 missions a year, crossing most of the globe's airspace. This would require:permission from over 100 governments. There are also concerns it could increase droughts and extreme weather.课堂作业:can we know from the passage 1music can make cheese tastiestare the benefits of reading paper booksabout the new idea to solve the problem of global warming.结束语:“Yes, I am nice.” “No, that doesn’t mean that you can walk all over me.”。
