探究型学习教学设计方案

1. Time: 8:00 am to 8:45am

2. Type of the lesson: Listening

3. Class: Senior 3

4. Topic: Population

5. Analysis of the students: It is a normal class of 48 students in a Senior Middle School; most of them would like to participate in classroom activities and they have a lot of experience of English listening. A few students are very good at both English listening and speaking when they are asked to make a speech or respond to the teacher’s questions, but nearly half of students are not. Since most students are not good at listening for the target information, the teacher has to carefully decide how to assign their attention while listing.

6. Background information of the portion: World population will reach 7 billion in 2012, according to a new estimate released by the US Census Bureau. China has the largest population in the world currently, but India will overtake China as the world's most populous nation by 2050. The portion I chose in the passage is from “The UN's reason for naming a symbolic date as seven-billion day is to draw attention to the speed of population growth”to “it cites estimates that 51 million newborns go unregistered every year”. This portion is mainly about different purposes of naming a symbolic date as seven-billion day, and one of the campaigns is designed to ensure that more children are properly registered.

Training students’listening ability-listening for the general idea, the specific and detailed information of the listening materials.

9. Teaching materials:

(1)Listening materials: portion from the passage “The World at Seven Billion”

(2)Pictures

(3)A passage from internet named World Population by 2050

(4)Multi-media computer system

Appendix

1. Portion of the passage:

The UN's reason for naming a symbolic date as seven-billion day is to draw attention to the speed of population growth, with less than 13 years having passed between the six-billion and seven-billion milestones.

"It can focus attention of people all around the world on global population challenges," says Mr Heilig.

Plan International's goal in picking a girl born in Uttar Pradesh as the seven billionth member of the world population is to draw attention to sex-selective abortion - the practice of aborting female foetuses in countries where male children are prized. India is also the country with the highest predicted population growth for 2010-2015 - 135 million compared to 80 million in China.

The charity knows of course, just like the UN, that the number seven billion is approximate.

One of its campaigns is designed to ensure that more children are properly registered - as otherwise they have no proof of identity and "no legal existence" - and it cites estimates that 51 million newborns go unregistered every year.
