Historical Background
The construction of the Summer Palace firs t started in 1750. At that time, the Qing Dy nasty was in its heyday and China was a po werful Asian country with vast territories. The monarch in power then was Emperor Qianlong. With supreme power and large s ums of money, he asked most skillful artisans from all over the coun try to carry out this construction work in ho nor of his mother `s birthday. After 15 year s and one seventh of the nation` s annual re venue spent, the Garden of Clear Ripples was completed and served as an evidence t o China` s scientific and technological achi evements.

In 1860, this vast royal garden was burnt down along with t he Yuanming Yuan (Garden of Perfection and Brightness) b y AngolFrench allied forces. In 1888, Empress Dowager Cixi recon structed the garden on the same site and renamed it the Gar den of Nurtured Harmony (Summer Palace). Characterized by its vast scope and rich cultural embodiments, the Sum mer Palace has become one of the most famous tourist sites in the world.

Structure
The two main elements of the garden are Longevity Hill and Kunming Lake. Kunming Lake, with an exquisite building in t he middle, takes up three quart ers of the garden's 290 hectares.

Situated in western outskirts of Beijing, the Summer Palace is 10 kilometers fro m the central city. It is China's leading classical garden which enjoys a worldw ide reputation. The Summer Palace wa s opened to the public in 1924 and incl uded in the UNESCO world heritage li st in 1998. A whole day is needed to vie w it in detail.
