Most routine service work of a Toyota/Lexus hybrid, such as wheel alignments, suspension work, exhaust system, and other routine under-vehicle repairs, is similar to conventional vehicles.
A special tester, such as the Fluke model 1587, is required to test if any of the high-voltage circuits are making contact with the body or ground of the vehicle. This procedure would only be necessary in the event of a collision to be sure that there is no electrical connection between the body and the high-voltage components or circuits before restoring the high-voltage connections.
The following steps must be performed prior to servicing the high-voltage system on a Toyota hybrid electric vehicle:

A freeze frame will have a great deal more information that can help immensely with diagnosis. Freeze frames can be used with many different types of DTCs, including those related to the hybrid highvoltage system.

4. Take steps to make sure that the service plug cannot be installed by another service technician while you are servicing the vehicle. This can be done by securing the service plug on your person or in a special lock box.

Scan Tool
While some aftermarket scan tools can access hybrid PIDs and DTCs and perform some bi-directional tests, there is nothing that outperforms the factory scan tool for the specific vehicle. Toyota's Diagnostic Tester will access all available vehicle information and perform all diagnostic testing on the Toyota Hybrid System.

Depowering the High-voltage System
The high-voltage system on a Toyota hybrid electric vehicle can produce upwards of 650 volts. Incorrect handling of high-voltage circuits can cause severe burns or electric shock that could result in serious injury or death. Service on the high-voltage system should always start with steps to manually depower the system.

2. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the auxiliary battery. This provides an extra margin of safety when dealing with the HV system.

Stealth or Quiet Mode
Care should be taken when driving a Toyota/Lexus hybrid in and around the shop because they can be driven using electric power only. That means it can be in a bay ready to go, with the engine ready to start up, but all the while it is perfectly silent. Known as stealth or quiet mode, this means that the vehicle can be moving yet no sound will be heard. Customers or employees can easily walk in front of the vehicle without warning due to the silence of the vehicle.
