Have you ever drawn a Halloween witch (女巫) in your art class? Perhaps the teacher
put some of the students’ drawings on the board. Although everyone drew the same subject, some of the drawings probably looked different from others. Many of the artists put into their pictures some of their feelings about witches.
When the famous Spanish painter Pablo Picasso went to the art school, he and his classmates painted the same subjects. They drew trees, flowers, and people. They made sketches of the sea and of buildings. Many of their paintings looked alike.
Picasso discovered many things about painting in school. He studied the works of famous artists and learned from them. But he was beginning to express himself in his own way. In time, his paintings were so different that they could be picked out from the drawings of the other artists. He had developed a style of his own.
It has been said that Picasso never set out to paint carrying his easel (画架) and paintbrushes (画笔). When he felt like painting, he painted, even if it was the middle of the night. Sometimes he made a quick drawing with his fingers or with a rusty (生锈的) nail he had picked up.
He never painted an object just the way his eyes saw it, as if he were taking a photograph. But his paintings still had meaning to many who saw them. His art became so special that Picasso no longer belonged to the group of artists who thought and painted alike.

It happened to be a beautiful summer afternoon, and Mr. Phillip was taking a walk in the downtown area of Paris, capital of France.
When he turned to a street corner, he heard the voice of a lovely French singer coming from a nearby restaurant. The sweet music attracted him, so he went into the restaurant to hear it better. Mr. Phillip sat down quietly at a table near the door. Noticing the waiter come over, he ordered a glass of French wine.
The waiter returned with the glass of wine and put it on the table. Mr. Phillip started drinking the wine slowly and watching other people in the restaurant. There were three customers sitting at a table near him. He could tell by their accents that one of them was an American, one an Englishman and the third man was a funny-looking stranger. The polite waiter served each of the three men a glass of beer. By chance, each glass had a fly in it.
Out of curiosity, Mr. Phillip watched carefully what they were going to do. To his amusement, he found that each of them took a quite different attitude. The American picked up his glass, took a hard look at the fly, and then poured the fly and half of his beer on the floor. The Englishman looked into the glass, noticed the fly and reached for a spoon, with which he took the fly out of the beer and drank the rest of it. Opened on October 27, 1907 and completed in 1908, Union Station (联盟火车站) is considered to be one of the finest examples of the Beaux-Arts (古典装饰的) style of architecture. Architect Daniel Burnham designed the building.
At the time it was built, Union Station covered more ground than any other buildings in the United States and was the largest train station in the world. In many ways, Union Station was a city within a city. At various times it employed a
staff of over 5,000 people and provided hotel, ice house, first-class restaurant and police station.
As train travel was the means of transportation for even US Presidents in the early 1900s, a Presidential Suite (总统套间) was added to Union Station. In 1909, President Taft was the first President to use the room and over the years many famous people were officially welcomed there. The last President to use the Presidential Suite was President Eisenhower.
For half a century and through two world wars, Union Station served Washington and the US as a major center of transportation and the place for many historic events. On April 14, 1945, a train backed into Union Station carrying the casket (棺材) of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
However, the air travel led to a decline in railroad passengers, and Union Station began to fall into disuse. In 1968, the decision was made to change it into the “National Visitor Center”. The project opened in July 4, 1976 but failed to draw enough crowds to sustain its operation, and was closed in 1978.
While Congress debated the future of Union Station, rain damage caused parts of the roof to fall down. Following three years of repair at a cost of $160 million, Union Station reopened on September 29, 1988.
Today, Union Station continues to make history as the most visited place with over 29 million visitors a year. World-class exhibitions and international cultural events are hosted there for the public to enjoy. Private special events are celebrated in the grand halls. Even today, US Presidents still visit Union Station.

We’ve all heard about the power of positive thinking, but a recent study found that peopl e who think they’re getting fit actually get more positive benefits from activity, according to a Reuters Health article.
The study examined hotel housekeepers over a period of four weeks. Some of the housekeepers were told that their work duties gave them enough activity to meet the Surgeon General’s health guidelines (准则). Another group of housekeepers were told
nothing. After four weeks, the housekeepers who believed their work activity counted as exercise lost weight and body fat, and their blood pressure went down.
The results of this study suggest that it’s important to understand and believe in the positive benefits of your activity. So here are a few things to think about the next time you exercise:
Just thirty minutes of quick walking each day can greatly reduce your risk of a heart attack.
Even your housework ― like yard work and house cleaning ― can help you burn calories and increase your fitness levels.
Weight bearing activity just a few times a week can build bone density (密度) and reduce your chances of developing osteoporosis (骨质疏松).
Three 10-minute workouts (锻炼) throughout the day are just as good to your health as one long workout.
Moderate (适度的) amounts of exercise have been linked to lower rates of heart disease, stroke and even cancer.
Strength training can help make daily activities like carrying bags or laundry feel easier.
Regular exercise will reduce stress, keep you in a good mood and improve the quality of your sleep.
52. The main purpose of this passage is to _____.
A. encourage people to think they will get fit in different activities
B. tell people how to finish the work duties better
C. tell people how to lose weight
D. advise people to do more housework
53. It can be inferred from the passage that _____.
A. thought is more important than activity
B. housekeepers lead a happier life than workers
C. positive thinking does good to our health
D. if one wants to get fit, think more
54. The housekeepers who were told their work would keep them fit _____.
A. found it hard to finish their work on time
B. lost fit and enjoyed better health
C. had little sense of humor
D. gained weight after the work
55. Which of the following is NOT the suggested things to think about when you exercise?
A. Housework helps burn calories.
B. Regular exercise leads to better sleep.
C. Weight bearing activity does good to people.
D. Walking a dog reduces the chance of a heart disease.

Dear Emily,
How are you? Thanks for your last letter.
This summer holiday, I had a wonderful time with my little niece. She is a ten-month-old baby, who is the loveliest child I have ever seen. Her face is like a red apple and her eyes are like bright stars. When you carry her in your arms, she likes to put her arms around your neck. All the members of my families love her very much and often try to make her smile, but quite often it is she who makes us laugh. Once I winked at her and she smiled. When I did it again, she watched me attentively. Then she tried to copy me. When I saw this, I began to laugh. When I looked at her again, she was looking at me, puzzled, as if she was asking, "What are you laughing at?”
I hope you can share some interesting stories with me. Look forward to hearing from you soon.
Yours,
Li Hua。
