English BP debate draft
Motion: This house will always require police officers to wear surveillance ca -meras while on duty.
Pros : When you are in danger, you expect the police to protect you; when someone is breaking the law, you expect the police to act accordingly, and above all, when the police make an arrest, you expect them to do so with a strong sense of morality and for the betterment of society.
These expectations are usually met during most police-civilian intera -
ctions, but that is not always the case. When some special corruption
occurs, it makes it difficult for citizens to believe that the police truly
have their best interest in mind. Therefore ,it is urgent to require police officers to wear surveillance cameras while on duty.
Pros: It can preserve the truth powerfully. When a police officer wears a ca -mera, when he or she makes it a part of their everyday interaction with the public, it serves to keep people's emotions in check. And, most imp -ortantly, it serves to create an irrefutable artifact.
you may say that cops can’t do that as what people considerade. but I simply cannot share in your level of pessimism. I believe that if the
behavior of the bad actors were visible that it would change. I am not saying that things are not terrible: they may be. But I am saying that
things can get better.
Pros :Just for cops,it is very useful. All of the police I know are in favor of this. They want cameras on at all times that they ideally couldn't inte-
rfere with. Not only will those cameras protect the public from police
misbehavior, it will protect officers from frivolous lawsuits and an
alarming amount of people calm down when they're informed their
actions are being recorded.
Pros :Just for public people,it is also very useful. Many citizens fearful of police misbehavior have taken matters into their own hands, using their smartphones to record interactions that often reveal unprofessional,
brutish, and even illegal behavior on the part of arresting patrolmen.
This evidence can certainly come in handy in court for citizens facing
false charges. But a citize centric approach is not systematic. It’s time for municipal and state lawmakers to step up and mandate the use of these cameras.
Pros : Yes, equipping police with body cameras will raise dozens of new issues and even trigger some unintended consequences, but so what?
New issues would certainly be a step up from the old issue of police
brutality allegations, which have been the bane of law enforcement for decades.
So ,that is urgent to require police officers to wear surveillance cameras while on duty.
Cons : There also may be a question of officer privacy as more police depart- ments require them to wear cameras. As of now, more than 1,200 police agencies are using cameras by Taser International and that number may grow as more incidents such as the one in Ferguson, Missouri, come up in the future.
Complaints about excessive costs coming from police departments
maintaining fleets of military assault vehicles are ludicrous. Once police cameras become commonplace and volumes spike, costs will drop like a rock. Besides, how many million-dollar excessive force lawsuits does a department have to avoid in order to pay for a total coverage system? Cons : The real world just doesn't work that way. Cops are not accountable.
We need to take more responsibility for policing our own communities
and spend less time demanding that more money is spent on police bu -dgets.Police are "State Violence". They exist to encourage the rest of us to follow the rules for fear of specifically this sort of situation.
Cons :They are never, in any precinct, going to be an acceptable institution.
They will not find your stolen shit, they might arrest you if you witness a tragedy, and if you want to go tell your elected representatives they are
a bunch of assholes, they will come out in paramilitary gear and spray
fucking pepper spray or teargas in your face.
They have one of the strongest unions in the country and their own bill of rights. Cameras are a good idea, but they're just not going to fix this. Cons :We would love to see people in the tech industry get involved in Co-pWatch, talk to people that have been doing this, esp in the bay area for decades. It is astoundingly difficult to get even a reprimand on file. We wish technology could fix the police, but it cannot.
Therefore ,we don’t think that requiring police officers to wear surveill -ance ca -meras while on duty is a wise approach.。
