My friend and proud father Bobby Lewis was taking his two little boys to play miniature golf. He walked up to the fellow at the ticket counter and said, "How much is it to get in?"

他走向售票处,向售票员问道:“进去需要花多少钱?”The young man replied, "$3.00 for you and $3.00 for any kid who is older than six. We let them in free if they are six or younger. How old are they?"

他们多大了?”Bobby replied, "The lawyer's three and the doctor is seven, so I guess I owe you $6.00."

”The man at the ticket counter said, "Hey, Mister, did you just win the lottery or something? You could have saved yourself three bucks. You could have told me that the older one was six; I wouldn't have known the difference." Bobby replied, "Yes,that may be true, but the kids would have known the difference."

1 "Come in," God said to me,"so,you would like to interview Me?" "If you have the time," I said. He smiled through His beard and said:"My time is called eternity and is enough to do everything;what questions do you have in mind to ask me?" "None that are new to you. What's the one thing that surprises you most about mankind?" He answered:"That they get bored of being children, are in a rush to grow up,and then long to be children again. That they lose their health to make money and then lose their money to restore their health. That by thinking anxiously about the future, they forget the present, such that they live neither for the present nor the future. That they live as if they will never die,and they die as if they never had never lived..." His hands took mine and we were silent. After a long period,I said,"May I ask you another question?" He replied with a smile. "As a Father, what would you ask your children to do for the new year?" "To learn that they cannot make anyone love them. What they can do is to let themselves be loved. To learn that it takes years to build trust, and a few seconds to destroy it. To learn that what is most valuable is not what they have in their lives, but who they have in their lives. To learn that it is not good to compare themselves to others. There will be others better or worse than they are. To learn that a rich person is not one who has the most, but is one who needs the least. To learn that they should control their attitudes, otherwise their attitudes will control them. To learn that it only takes a few seconds to open profound wounds in persons we love, and that it takes many years to heal them. To learn to forgive by practicing forgiveness. To learn that there are persons that love them dearly, but simply do not know how to show their feelings. To learn that money can buy everything but happiness. To learn that while at times they may be entitled to be upset, that does not give them the right to upset those around them. To learn that great dreams do not require great wings, but a landing gear to achieve. To learn that true friends are scarce,he/she who has found one has found a true treasure. To learn that they are masters of what they keep to themselves and slaves of what they say. To learn that they shall reap what they plant;if they plant gossip they will harvest intrigues,if they plant love they will harvest happiness. To learn that true happiness is not to achieve their goals but to learn to be satisfied with what they already achieved. To learn that happiness is a decision. They decide to be happy with what they are and have,or die from envy and jealousy of what they lack. To learn that two people can look at the same thing and see something totally different. To learn that those who are honest with themselves without considering the consequences go far in life. To learn that even though they may think they have nothing to give, when a friend cries with them, they find the strength to appease the pain. To learn that by trying to hold on to love ones, they very quickly push them away;and by letting go of those they love, they will be side by side forever. 经典美文英语初一 篇2 I’ve just come back from school, and I’m on my computer already! I could do anything to distract myself from your thoughts…I could read a book,do my homework or even have lunch. 我刚刚放学回家,就已经坐在了电脑前面!任何事情都能把我从对你的思念中拉回来……我可以找本书看、做作业或是吃午饭。

M周三下午两点22 October, 19081908年,10月22日My dear parents,亲爱的爸爸、妈妈:The worst is behind us! That was last night's organ concert and the lecture preceding it. Quitefrankly I was somewhat worried about this lecture. Since I am not used to giving long talks inFrench and the hall is enormous: three thousand people. But to my amazement I discoveredthat I felt as much at home in French as I do in German, and that it was easier for me to speakloudly and clearly in French than in German! I stood there without a manuscript, and withinthree minutes. I sensed that I had captured my audience more surely than I had ever donebefore. I spoke for fifty-five minutes, and next came an organ recital that lasted for one hour.I have never been so successful. When the program ended, they all remained in their seats: Ihad to go back to my organ and play for another half hour; the audience was sorry to leave itwas half-past midnight!

1. The Beauty of NatureNature is like a great artist, always creating the most amazing masterpieces. Take the sunrise for example. In the early morning, when the first ray of sunlight peeks through the dark sky, it's like a shy little girl gradually showing her face. The sky changes from a deep purple to a warm orange, and then to a bright yellow. The clouds seem to be painted with gold and pink, floating lazily in the sky.The mountains also have their own charm. They stand tall and majestic, like silent guardians. The trees on the mountains are like soldiers in green uniforms, standing in rows. The fresh air in the mountains is like a sweet drink, making you feel alive and energetic. And the rivers, they are like silver ribbons winding through the land. The water is so clear that you can see the fish swimming freely. Sometimes, the river makes a gentle sound, like it's whispering a sweet song.In nature, every little thing has its own beauty. We should cherish and protect it, because it is the most precious gift from God.2. A Wonderful JourneyOnce I went on a journey to a small village. It was a place full of surprises. The village was surrounded by green fields. As I walked along the narrow path, I could smell the fresh earth and the sweet fragrance of wild flowers. There were little cottages here and there, with thatched roofs. The walls were painted in white, and some had colorful paintings on them.I met an old man sitting outside his house. He was smoking a pipe and looking at the distance with a peaceful expression. I said hello to him, and he greeted me with a warm smile. He told me stories about the village, how it had changed over the years, and the traditions that had been passed down for generations.I also visited a small stream near the village. The water was cool and clear. I saw children playing in the water, their laughter echoing in the air. They were catching small fish and tadpoles, their faces full of joy. This journey made me realize that there are so many beautiful places and simple joys in the world that we often overlook in our busy lives.3. My Favorite Animal - The DogDogs are man's best friends, and they are truly amazing animals.I once had a dog named Lucky. He was a golden retriever. His fur was like golden silk, soft and shiny. His eyes were big and brown, always looking at me with loyalty and love.Lucky was always full of energy. Every morning, hewould wake me up by licking my face, as if saying, "Come on, it's time to start a new day!" Then we would go for a walk in the park. He would run around happily, chasing after butterflies and squirrels. One time, I was sad because I didn't do well in an exam. Lucky seemed to sense my unhappiness. He came to me, put his head on my lap, and just stayed there quietly, as if giving me comfort.Dogs are not only cute and fun, but also very intelligent. They can understand our commands and emotions. They bring so much warmth and happiness to our lives.4. The Magic of MusicMusic is like a magic key that can open different doors in our hearts. When I listen to soft classical music, it's like I'm in a peaceful forest. It makes me feel calm and relaxed, all the stress and worries seem to disappear.Pop music, on the other hand, is like a burst of energy. The upbeat rhythm makes my feet tap involuntarily. I can't help but sing along with the catchy melody. It gives me the motivation to face challenges and be positive. There are also folk music from different cultures. The sidewalks are filled with people, some walking briskly, some chatting on their mobile phones. In the shopping areas, there are bright lights and colorful signs. People are shopping for clothes, food, and all kinds of things. The shops are full of all kinds of goods, from expensive luxury items to cheap daily necessities. At night, the city is transformed again. The neon lights are on, creating a colorful and dreamy world. The cottage has a thatched roof, and the walls are made of stone. There is a small garden in front of the house, full of colorful flowers.Inside the house, there is a warm fireplace in the living room. On cold winter nights, I can sit by the fireplace, reading a good book and drinking a cup of hot tea. The kitchen is small but well - equipped, where I can cook my favorite meals. There are two bedrooms, one for me and one for guests. The beds are soft and comfortable, with warm quilts. One day it was announced to the feelings that the island would sink, so all constructed boats and left. Except for Love.Love was the only one who stayed. Love wanted to hold out until the last possible moment. When the island had almost sunk, Love decided to ask for help.Richness was passing by Love in a grand boat. Love said,"Richness, can you take me with you?"Richness answered, "No, I can't. There is a lot of gold and silver in my boat. There is no place here for you."Love decided to ask Vanity who was also passing by in a beautiful vessel. "Vanity, please help me!""I can't help you, Love. You are all wet and might damage my boat," Vanity answered.Sadness was close by so Love asked, "Sadness, let me go with you.""Oh . . . Love, I am so sad that I need to be by myself!"Happiness passed by Love, too, but she was so happy that she did not even hear when Love called her.Suddenly, there was a voice, "Come, Love, I will take you." People in large cities are much more careful to respect the privacy of the individual.Sometimes this feeling seems to be one of indifference, but it is a convention of city life to curb one‘s curiosity about the personal affairs of strangers.

Most do not fully see this truth.Instead they plain about their problem and difficulties as if life should be easy.It seems to them that difficulties represent a special kind of suffering especiallyforced upon them or else upon their families, their class, or even their nation.

What makes life difficult is that the process of facing and solving problems is a painful one.Problems, depending duanwenw. on their nature , cause in us sadness or loneliness or regret or anger or fear. These are un- fortable feelings, often as painful as any kind of physical pain. And since life causes an endless series of problems, life is always difficult and is full of pain as well as joy.

The art of livingWhat is it like to be old in the United States? What will our own lives be like when we are old? Americans find it difficult to think about old age until they are propelled into the midst of it by their own aging and that of relatives and friends. Aging is the neglected stepchild of the human life cycle. Though we have begun to examine the socially taboo subjects of dying and death, we have leaped over that long period of time preceding death known as old age. In truth, it is easier to manage the problems of death than the problem of living as an old person. Death is a dramatic, one-time crisis while old age is a day-by-day and year-by-year confrontation with powerful external forces, a bittersweet coming to terms with one's own personality and one's life.Old age is neither inherently miserable nor inherently sublime-like every stage of life it has problems, joys, fears and potentials. The process of aging and eventual death must ultimately be accepted as the natural progression of the life cycle, the old completing their prescribed life spans and making way for the young. Much that is unique in old age in fact derives from the reality of aging and the imminence of death. The old must clarify and find use for what they have attained in a lifetime of learning and adapting they must conserve strength andresources where necessary and adjust creatively to those changes and losses that occur as part of the aging experience. The elderly have the potential for qualities of human reflection and observation which can only come from having lived an entire life span. There is a lifetime accumulation of personality and experience which is available to be used and enjoyed. But what are an individual's chances for a "good" old age in America, with satisfying final years and a dignified death? Unfortunately , none too good. For many elderly Americans old age is a tragedy, a period of quiet despair, deprivation , desolation and muted rage. This can be a consequence of the kind of life a person has led in younger years and the problems in his or her relationships with others. There are also inevitable personal and physical losses to be sustained, some of which can become overwhelming and unbearable. All of this is the individual factor, the existential element. But old age is frequently a tragedy even when the early years have been fulfilling and people seemingly have everything going for them. Herein lies what I consider to be the genuine tragedy of old age in America -- we have shaped a society which is extremely harsh to live in when one is old. The tragedy of old age is not the fact that each of us must grow old and die but that the process of doing so has been made unnecessarily and at times excruciatingly painful, humiliating, debilitating and isolating through insensitivity, ignorance and poverty. The potentials for satisfactions and even triumphs in late life are real and vastly under explored. For the most part the elderly struggle to exist in an inhospitable world. Living a solitary lifeThe other day an acquaintance of mine, a gregarious andcharming man, told me he had found himself unexpectedly alone in New York for an hour or two between appointments. He went to the Whitney and spent the "empty" time looking at things in solitary bliss. For him it proved to be a shock nearly as great as falling in love to discover that he could enjoy himself so much alone. What had he been afraid of, I asked myself? That, suddenly alone, he would discover that he bored himself, or that there was, quite simply, no self there to meet? But having taken the plunge, he is now on the brink of adventure; he is about to be launched into his own inner space to the astronaut. His every perception will come to him with a new freshness and, for a time, seem startlingly original. For anyone who can see things for himself with a naked eye becomes, for a moment or two, something of a genius. With another human being present vision becomes double vision, inevitably. We are busy wondering, what does my companion see or think of this, and what do I think of it? The original impact gets lost, or diffused."Music I heard with you was more than music." Exactly. And therefore music itself can only be heard alone. Solitude is the salt of personhood. It brings out the authentic flavor of every experience."Alone one is never lonely: the spirit adventures, walking in a quiet garden, in a cool house, abiding single there."Loneliness is most acutely felt with other people, for with others, even with a lover sometimes, we suffer from our differences of taste, temperament, mood. Human intercourse often demands that we soften the edge of perception, or withdraw at the very instant of personal truth for fear of hurting,or of being inappropriately present, which is to say naked, in a social situation. Alone we can afford to be wholly whatever we are, and to feel whatever we feel absolutely. That is a great luxury! For me the most interesting thing about a solitary life, and mine has been that for the last twenty years, is that it becomes increasingly rewarding. When I can wake up and watch the sun rise over the ocean, as I do most days, and know that I have an entire day ahead, uninterrupted, in which to write a few pages, take a walk with my dog, lie down in the afternoon for a long think (why does one think better in a horizontal position?), read and listen to music, I am flooded with happiness.I'm lonely only when I am overtired, when I have worked too long without a break, when from the time being I feel empty and need filling up. And I am lonely sometimes when I come back home after a lecture trip, when I have seen a lot of people and talked a lot, and am full to the brim with experience that needs to be sorted out. Then for a little while the house feels huge and empty, and I wonder where my self is hiding. It has to be recaptured slowly by watering the plants and perhaps,by looking again at each one as though it were a person. It takes a while, as I watch the surf blowing up in fountains at the end of the field, but the moment comes when the world falls away, and the self emerges again from the deep unconscious, bringing back all I have recently experienced to be explored and slowly understood, when I can converse again with my hidden powers, and so grow, and so be renewed, till death do us part. The tragedy of old ageWhat is it like to be old in the United States? Mark was walking home from school one day when he noticed that the boy ahead of him had tripped and dropped all of the books he was carrying, along with two sweaters, a baseball bat, a glove and a small tape recorder. Mark knelt down and helped the boy pick up the scattered articles.

Since they were going the same way, he helped to carry part of the burden. As they walked Mark discovered that the boy's name was Bill, that he loved video games, baseball and history, that he was having a lot of trouble with his other subjects and that he had just broken up with his girlfriend.

They arrived at Bill's home first and Mark was invited in for a Coke and to watch some television. The afternoon passed pleasantly with a few laughs and some shared small talk, then Mark went home. They continued to see each other around school, had lunch together once or twice, then both graduated from junior high school. They ended up in the same high school where they had brief contacts over the years. Finally the long awaited senior year came, and three weeks before graduation, Bill asked Mark if they could talk.

Bill reminded him of the day years ago when they had first met. “Do you ever wonder why I was carrying so many things home that day?” asked Bill. “You see, I cleaned out my locker because I didn't want to leave a mess for anyone else. I had stored away some of my mother's sleeping pills and I was going home to commit suicide. But after we spent some time together talking and laughing, I realized that if I had killed myself, I would have missed that time and so many others that might follow. So you see, Mark, when you picked up my books that day, you did a lot more. You saved my life.”

”Every little hello, every little smile, every helping hand saves a hurting heart. There s a miracle called Friendship that dwells in the heart. Friends are a very rare jewel, indeed. They make you smile and encourage you to succeed. They lend an ear, they share a word of praise, and they always want to open their heart to us. Show your friends how much you care...

The teacher delivered a free writing amazingly.

The child was so happy by thinking that he can finally write about his thought in his inner heart instead of the thesis writing.

Lying on the soft grass land with the sunshine sprinkling over his body warmly, he jumped up after thinking and composed a satisfactory article------The Sound of the Sun.

The boy handed in the composition with his fulfilled confidence, and then, he met the endless waiting.

At last, the paper was returned.

After seeing the result, the boy was trembled in the bloomy spring days.

The teacher gave him a “poor”in the last as the evaluation..

Th e teacher said, “How amuse you are! How can the sun make any noise?! You are not allowed to write the composition in this way any more.. The marks you get will be very low in this way.那个“差”字像一个张牙舞爪的魔鬼,时时出现在他的梦里。

The‘poor’evaluation is like a clewing de vils, which will appear in his dreams sometimes.

Several years passed, the teacher is still who he is, and the student is himself the same but grows older. Meanwhile, he has been regarded as a good boy who will not talk about the ill-advised things or say the strange words.

But one day in an reading appreciation course, the teacher interpreted the sent ence “I have heard the call of the sun” written by a famous author. His teacher spouted how graceful this sentence was, and how sensible it was, but he can hardly focus himself on even a word of it.
