The Double Ninth Day重阳节
Double Ninth Festival falls on the ninth day the ninth lunar month. In ancient times, the numbers are divided intotwo groups: Yin and Yang. The odd numbers are Yang while the even numbers are Yin. According to this theory,nine is a yang number, therefore it is also called Chong Yang Festival(Chong means repeat or double). Thedouble Ninth Festival begins in the Warring States Period. In the Han Dynasty, it was called Zhuyu Festival ,Mountain-Climbing Festival and
Chrysanthemum[kri'sænθəməm]Festival, as there was a custom of wearingzhuyu ( a herb) ,drinking chrysanthemum wine and climbing mountains. The festival comes when the day is clearwith sunny skies and crisp air- a favorable time for climbing mountains. So climbing is a popular activity to markthe day in many places. The custom of hanging zhuyu on the door and climbing mountains is endowed[in'dau]赋予with the significance of eliminating [i'limineit]消除diseases and subjugating
['sʌbdʒəɡeit, -dʒu-]克服disasters.In the Tang Dynasty, the custom of climbing and appreciating chrysanthemum became widely spread andbecome as the main activity on this occasion, and to these, there added other activities, such as going to themountain fair, offering sacrifices to the ancestors, hunting outsides, worshipping the God of fortune, boundinggirls’feet. Nowadays, the Double Ninth Festival day is fixed as the Elderly Day or Old Men Festival, on whichactivities are held to show respect and love to the elderly people. And old people are especially meant to improvetheir health by taking part in the activities on that day. Present people no longer drink the chrysanthemum flowerwine and wear Zhuyu on this day, only a few regions’people still follow the custom of eating the Double Ninthcake.
The Double Ninthe Day occurs in the middle of autumn so peasants use the day to celebrate the harvest withvaried activities:
a). Viewing/appreciating chrysanthemum[kri'sænθəməm]菊花
Chrysanthemums are flowers that smell sweet and blossom['blɔsəm]盛开in cold, frosty结霜的weather. It iseulogized ['ju:lədʒaiz]称赞as the“gentleman”of flowers. Chrysanthemum shows are usually held in big citiesacross China and attract numerous visitors. Thousands of chrysanthemums are on display, people appreciatethem, poets write odes颂歌about them and artists paint them.
B). Drinking chrysanthemum wine
Chrysanthemum tea is believed to purify the heart , bring blood pressure down and improve eyesight.(清心明目降血压)
c). climb mountains .
Autumn is the best season to climb mountains, as the weather is pleasant, the sky clear and the air crisp. Peoplerevel in (陶醉于) the beautiful autumn scenes, and enjoy the fresh air and warm sunshine. As a pasttime,mountain climbing is good for keeping fit. The fragrant Zhuyu can be used as herbal medicine. It not only has hemagic to exorcise['eksɔ:saiz]驱逐evil spirits, but it does reple[ri'pel] mosquitoes 驱蚊. That is why mountainclimbers often carry a bundle of the plant.
