Then, during the first period, teachers call in orders on their room phones, and students make deliveries.By closing time at 9:20 a.m., the shop usually sells 90 drinks. “Whoever made the chi tea, Ms. Schatzman says it was good,” Christy McKinley, a second year student, announced recently, after hanging up with the teacher. The shop is called the Dixie PIT, which stands for Power in Transition. Although some of the students are not disabled, many are, and the PIT helps them prepare for life after high school. They learn not only how to run a coffee shop but also how to deal with their affairs. They keep a timecard and receive paychecks, which they keep in check registers.Special-education teachers Kim Chevalier and Sue Casey introduced the Dixie PIT from a similar program at Kennesaw Mountain High School in Georgia. Not that it was easy. Chevalier’s first problem to overcome was product-related. Should schools be selling coffee? What about sugar content?Kenton County Food Service Director Ginger Gray helped. She made sure all the drinks, which use non-fat milk, fell within nutrition(营养)guidelines. The whole school has joined in to help.Teachers agreed to give up their lounge(休息室)in the mornings. They build their homes about 4.6m above the river, an important feature(特征)for the safety of the young. It is called the hoatzin. In appearance, the birds of both sexes look very much alike with brown on theback and cream and red on the underside. The head is small, with a large set of feathers on the top, bright red eyes, and blue skin. Its nearest relatives are the common birds, cuckoos. Its most striking feature, though, is only found in the young.Baby hoatzins have a claw on the leading edge of each wing and another at the end of each wing tip. Using these four claws, together with the beak(喙), they can climb about in the bushes, looking very much like primitive birds must have done. When the young hoatzins have learned to fly, they lose their claws.During the drier months between December and March hoatzins fly about the forest in groups of 20 to 30 birds, but in April, when the rainy season begins, they collect together in smaller living units of two to seven birds for producing purposes.63.What is the text mainly about?A.Hoatzins in dry and rainy seasons.B.The relatives and enemies of hoatzins.C.Primitive birds and hoatzins of the Amazon.D.The appearance and living habits of hoatzins.64.Young hoatzins are different from their parents in that .A.they look like young cuckoosB. they have claws on the wingsC. they eat a lot like a cowD. they live on river banks65.What can we infer about primitive birds from the text?A.They had claws to help them climb.B.They could fly long distances.C.They had four wings like hoatzins.D.They had a head with long feathers on the top.66.Why do hoatzins collect together in smaller groups when the rainy season comes?A.To find more food.B. To produce their young.DScience can’t explain the power of pets, but many studies have shown that thecompany of pets can help lower blood pressure (血压)and raise chances of recovering from a heart attack, reduce loneliness and spread all-round good cheer.Any owner will tall you how much joy a pet brings. For some, an animal provides more comfort than a husband/wife. A 2002 study by Karen Allen of the State University of New York measured stress(紧张)levels and blood pressure in people --- half of them pet owners --- while they performed 5 minutes of mental arithmetic(算术)or held a hand in ice water. Subjects completed the tasks alone, with a husband/wife, a close friend or with a pet. People with pets did it best. Those tested with their animal friends had smaller change in blood pressure and returned most quickly to baseline heart rates. With pets in the room, people also made fewer math mistakes than when doing in front of other companions. It seems people feel more relaxed (放松)around pets, says Allen, who thinks it may be because pets don’t judge.A study reported last fall suggests that having a pet dog not only raises your spirits but may also have an effect on your eating habits. Researchers at Northwestern Memorial Hospital spent a year studying 36 fat people and their equally fat dogs on diet-and-exercise programs; a separate group of 56 people without pets were put on a diet program. On average, people lost about I1 pounds, or 5% of their body weight. Their dogs did even better, losing an average of 12 pounds, more than 15% of their body weight. Dog owners didn’t lose any more weight than those without dogs but, say researchers, got more exercise overall --- mostly with their dogs --- and found it worth doing.67.What does the text mainly discuss?A.What pets bring to their owners.B. How pets help people calm down.C. People’s opinions of keeping pets.D. Pet’s value in medical research.68.We learn from the text that a person with heart disease has a better chance of getting well if .A. he has a pet companionB. he has less stress of workC. he often does mental arithmeticD. he is taken care of by his family69.According to Allen, why did the people do better with pets around when facingstressful tasks?A. They are in higher spirits.70.The research mentioned in the last paragraph reports that .A.people with dogs did more exerciseB.dogs lost the same weight as people didC.dogs liked exercise much more than people didD.people without dogs found the program unhelpful.EThere were smiling children all the way.

Mary responded in typical teenage fashion. From that moment on, "the very last thing I ever thought about doing was taking a typing course," she recalls. The show business thing worked out, of course. In her career, Mary won many awards.Only recently, when she began to write Growing Up Again, did she regret ignoring her morn," I don't know how to use a computer," she admits.Unlike her 1995 autobiography, After All, her second book is less about life as anaward-winning actress and more about living with diabetes (糖尿病).All the money from the book is intended for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), an organization she serves as international chairman."I felt there was a need for a book like this," she says."I didn't want to lecture, but I wanted other diabetics to know that things get better when we're self-controlled and do our part in managing the disease."But she hasn't always practiced what she teaches. In her book, she describes that awful day, almost 40 years ago, when she received two pieces of life-changing news.First, she had lost the baby she was carrying, and second, tests showed that she had diabetes. In a childlike act, she left the hospital and treated herself to a box of doughnuts (甜甜圈).Years would pass before she realized she had to grow up--again---and take control of her diabetes, not let it control her.Only then did she kick her three-pack-a-day cigarette habit, overcome her addiction to alcohol, and begin to follow a balanced diet.Although her disease has affected her eyesight and forced her to the sidelines of the dance floor, she refuses to fall into self-pity."Everybody on earth can ask, 'why me?' about something or other," she insists."It doesn't do any good.No one is immune (免疫的) to heartache, pain, and disappointments.Sometimes we can make things better by helping others.I've come to realize the importance of that as I've grown up this second time.I want to speak out and be as helpful as I can be."{TS}Why did Mary feel regretful?A.

Section C (12 marks)
Directions: Complete the following passage by filling in each blank with one word that best fits the context.
Parents are busy people. If they are working, they are usually not at home 48 their children return from school. Sometimes it is necessary for a parent to write 49 after-school note for their children. They sometimes put the note on the kitchen table, the refrigerator,
50 another place where their children are sure to find it. A note is often a
51 way to “talk” with a child than using the telephone. For one thing, parents have time to think about 52 they want to say before they write. 53 another, the
note lists all the information in one place. It is easy to read again and again. People often forget all the details that 54 hear in a telephone call. Finally, cell phones can be turned 55 or telephone calls not answered. For these reasons,
after-school notes are very popular with parents.
