The Academy has witnessed a history of more than one thousand years without a break, so it is called a “one-thousand-year-old academy”.
The historical transformation from Yuelu Academy to Hunan University is a dramatic development of China’s higher education, which mirrors the changes of China’s education system.
Zhang Shi (1132-1180)
He was a great thinker in the Northern Song Dynasty, representative of the Huxiang School. As a governmental official, he was honest and upright, with outstanding political performance. Zhang Shi devoted his life to education and learning. His eight-year-long teaching in the Academy established the scale of the Huxiang School, and he contributed substantially to the prosperity of Yuelu Academy.
It was renamed “ Classics Treasuring House” in the Song Dynasty after Emperor Zhen Zong had granted books to the library. This name was also used in the Yuan Dynasty.

1.It was formally set up in the ninth year of the Kai Bao Reign of the Northern Song Dynasty (976).
History
Yuelu Academy, surviving the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties, was converted into Hunan Institute of Higher Learning in 1903
Finally named Hunan University in 1926.
Functions: holding lectures, and memorial ceremonBaidu Nhomakorabeaes as well as a central book repository, as in all ancient academies of China.
As a classics library with over 50,000 books, the Yushu Library is still in use for students and the faculty of the Academy.

In 1956, the academy was listed as a historical site at the provincial level and later.
In 1988, it became a historical site at the state level.
Today, Hunan University has grown into a comprehensive university with a balanced development of various disciplines. A new chapter of the history of the one-thousand-year-old academy is being written.

“御”means “it is belongs to the emperor” When the Academy was initially founded, a library was built behind the Lecture Hall.

He was a great thinker and educator in the Southern Song Dynasty. Devoting all his life to education and scholarly research, He came in person to lecture at the Academy. While there he drew up the guides for learning and renovated and extended the Academy. As a result, he contributed tremendously to its development.
