1.What is acculturation
It is the term used to describe what happens when people from one culture enter a different culture. It refers to an individual’s learning and adopting the norms and values of the new host culture. This individual must find a new source of livelihood and build a new life. This is adaptation to the new host culture is called acculturation.
2.What are the two processes on which an individual’s level of acculturation depends
The degree to which the person approaches or avoids interaction with the host culture
The degree to which the individual maintains or relinquishes his or her native culture’s attributes
3.What are the four modes of acculturation
It includes assimilation, integration, separation and segregation, and marginalization.
4.What is the distinguished feature for each of the four modes of acculturation
1.Assimilation is a process in which members of an ethnic group are absorbed into the
dominant culture, losing their culture in the process.
2.Sometimes, some people desire a high level of interaction with the host culture while
maintaining identity with their native culture.
3.When individuals prefer low level of interaction with the host culture and associated
with microculttural groups while desiring a close connection with, and reaffirmation of, their native culture.
5.What are the factors that may affect intercultural adaptation and acculturation
Communication: personal communication, social communication
Host environment: host receptivity, host conformity pressure, ethnic group strength
Predisposition: preparedness, ethnic, personality
