• What is the common assumption about people who believe in superstition? How does the author discredit this assumption? • It is commonly assumed that people who believe in superstition are usually ignorant and naïve. But the author notices the flourishing superstition among many learned people in his university.
• After he describes the four forms of superstition, the author goes on to explore its his- tory and its relevance to human psychology. • “a submerged river of crude religion” --- By this metaphor the author suggests that superstition is an invisible force (a submerged river) that is in some way like religion.
