• The mirror creates fantasies of both a very fragmented body and an alienating identity.
We misbelieve that the image in the mirror is real, so a conflict between the perfect imago (the other) and our imperfect ego occurs.

Two Extremes during the mirror stage
• 1. affairement jubilatoire (狂喜 忙碌) We are glad with our integrated image. • 2. connaissance paranoiaque (偏执狂认识) We feel depressed with our disintegrated body.
Mirror Stage
Age: infants from 6 to about 18 months
• Definition: In this stage, we literally see ourselves in a mirror. Observing this mirror image permits us to perceive images that have concrete boundaries, allowing us to be aware of ourselves as independent beings who are separate from our mothers. This mirror image of ourselves as a whole and complete being is an ideal, an illusion, for we are not in full control of ourselves.
Effects
