Lead

According to journalism experts of old times, a lead must answer 5 W’s and 1 “H”. 5 “W”---when?where?who?what?why? H---how? Advantage: Such kind of lead---concrete and complete---enables the readers to catch the main facts. Disadvantage: it puts too many contents together, failing to give prominence to the key points and creating suspense.
Functions of a Lead

1. To tell the main points of a piece of news in concise language 2. To lead readers to the theme or subject of the news 3. To arouse the readers’ interest
The Newspaper Lead

The first paragraph of a news story is called the lead. It almost always gives you the story's main topic and most important facts. When you read a newspaper lead sentence, try to find the subject and main verb and note how the rest of the sentence adds information to the subject and main verb.
Reformed Lead

Leabharlann Baidu
Since 1950s, all-in-one lead was no longer the golden rule. A journalist may only stress one or two key elements in the lead and put the other in the body.
