Grade 8 Unit 9 Reading: Have you ever been to Singapore?
Self introduction
Good afternoon, everyone. I’m Gao Yun from Fengtai No.10 Middle School. Today I’m going to talk about Have you ever been to Singapore? It’s reading material in Unit9, Grade 8. I’ll present my lesson plan in the following parts.
Part One Analysis of the teaching material
The reading material is in Period 5, it’s about different information of Singapore. Its main grammar is present perfect tense. My students have learned the meaning, structure and usage of the tense in the last four lessons. This text will help them to consolidate the knowledge of present perfect tense they’ve learned. And the students can get something about population, temperature, food and places of interest in Sin gapore . It will help enlarge the students’ knowledge and the students may love the country after reading it . Also, reading teaching can help develop the students’ reading ability. The strategy in it is to ask the students to take time to reflect , theref ore, they can remember things better.
Teaching aims and demands
My teaching aims include three points: Knowledge goals, Ability goals and Moral goals
1. The students can read the new words correctly, learn the meaning of the new words, and be able to use some of them, like population, brave…;
2. Practice and consolidate the structure of present perfect tense by using “Have you done …” questions;
3. The students can know Singapore better;Teach the Ss to protect the environment when they travel.
Teaching key points and difficult points
The key point of the lesson is to enable the students to learn 29 new words, use present perfect tense better and get enough information of Singapore.
The difficult point of the lesson is to help the students be able to describe Singapore after reading and reflecting
Part Two Teaching methods and aids
1. Communicative teaching method
2. Audio-visual teaching method
3. Task-based” teaching method
4. Situation Approach
Teaching aids: Multi-media computer, Tape recorder, Software: PowerPoint,Pictures, videos and so on.
Part Three Learning methods
1.T each the Ss how to be successful language learners.
e "Reading—Scanning—Writing " to study English
3.Have a good reading strategy.
I n this lesson I’ll mainly use “Communicative” teaching method, “Audio-visual” teaching method, “Task-based” teaching method and Situation Approach. I’ll teach the Ss how to be successful language learners. Let the Ss pass ""Reading—Scanning—Writing " to study language and have a good reading strategy. That is to say, I’ll let the Ss to get a better understanding of the key structure of the passage.
Part Four Teaching procedures
Step One Pre-reading
1.The song of Travelling l ight leads into the new lesson.
2. A guessing game
At the beginning of the class, I’ll use The song of Travelling l ight to lead into the new lesson and then play a guessing game with my students to practice and consolidate present perfect tense and revise different information of different countries. Also, it’s a good way to let my students pay more attention to my lesson.
I will show the students some pictures and ask them to guess what country it is. For example, I’ll show my students some pictures of Big Ben, a famous football player—Beckham. The students can get the right answer “England” easily. And then I will ask them some questions or let them ask each other: Have you ever been to England? Have you ever heard of Beckham? Has S1 met Beckham before? … By practicing these questions, my students can have more chances to consolidate the related knowledge. Then I will present America, Australia, and China.
3. Before reading
I will present new words and some information of Singapore to lower the difficulty of reading.
A. Presentation of location and population
I will present Singapore by asking the students a question: which country is called City Garden?
I think several students can answer my question, it’s Singapore. And according to that name (City Garden) we also can get some information: Singapore is a small country. So it has a small population. But China has a very big population. Then I will show the students a map of the world, and ask the students where Singapore is. Therefore, I can present the phrase “in Southeast Asia”. Also, it’s close to the equator. Here, I can help the students learn some new words like “equator”, “temperature”, “season” and so on. And I will leave a question: Which season is the best one to go to Singapore? And tell them they can find the answer in the text later.
B. Presentation of Night Safari
I will show the students a video and some pictures of Night Safari in Singapore. We can revise some animals and my students can learn new ones. Of course it’s easy for them to find that the zoo is dark, it’s unusual. And I will tell them they can visit such kind zoos in Singapore. Here, I can also help the students learn new words like “dark”, “fear”, “brave” and so on. After that, I’ll ask my students if they want to learn more about Singapore. So, we can start reading.
Step Two While the reading
1. Scanning
I’ll ask the students to read the passage and find out how many things about Singapore it mentions and then complete the word map in 3a;
2. Read it carefully and then and get the main idea of each paragraph.
Let the students do some exercises. After this, my students will know more about Singapore.
3. Pair work
The statements in 3c are all false. I will ask the students to discuss them with their partners and then write down four true sentences.
The team that gets the most right sentences will win the most stars.
4. Listening to the tape
Let the students listen to the tape with a question: which is the most interesting thing in Singapore?
After listening, they should think about the text again and then answer my question.
Step Three After reading
My students have read the text for about 3 or 4 times, they have got much information about Singapore, so I’ll ask them to reflect and write an ad for Singapore. Before writing, they can discuss it with their teammates (4 students as a team). And I’ll give them some key words.
Part Five Summary and homework
1.Sum up the language points:
A.分数表达法:分子基,分母序,当分子大于一时,分母加s. Eg. three fifths five sixths
B.Population:
1.当表示人口的整体时,视为单数。

2.当表示人口中的部分时,视为复数。

C.Whenever = no matter when However = no matter how
Whatever = no matter what Wherever = no matter where
2.The homework includes two kinds, and the students can choose proper one according to his or her ability.
A. Write an ad for our hometown---- Huainan, and the ad should include information about
population, temperature, food, interesting place …
B. Write 4-6 sentences to describe the place they have ever been.
Blackboard design:
Unit 9 Have you ever been to Singapore?
1. Position: in the Southeast Asia
2. Language: Putonghua, English on the one hand, on the other hand
3. Population: Three quarters of the population are Chinese.
4. Food: You won’t have any trouble finding different foods all over the world
5. Zoo: The Night Safari is very special
6. Weather: The temperature is almost the same all year round.
My ideas of teaching this unit
1. These are very good methods of teaching English. In this way, the students are the principal part of teaching. And they are clear what is their target, so they will try their best to get the target.
2. English teaching should be close to daily life. After the students understand why they are studying English and how to use English, they will be more interested in it.
3. In the teaching process, we should encourage the students to join, observe, practice, think independently and cooperate. Change their thought from “I have to study.” to “I want to study.”
