According to grammar, it should be:
“The words were spat forth”/ “Ogilvie spat out the words”
Two purposes:1)the author here wants to make it more dramatic by having ― the words‖ following right after what he had just said , instead of saying ― he spat out the words‖. 2) ― the words spat forth‖ is more forceful and vivid than ―the words were spat forth.‖
