从英译汉看两种语言表达的差异

学院：文学与新闻学院专业：对外汉语姓名：郝宇菁学号：20100535056 摘要：英译汉是国内英语考试特有的题型,因此做惯了选择题的考生在做英译汉时如临大敌。但是只要用心寻找规律,用心钻研,英译汉也是可以突破的。英译汉的理论和技巧都是建立在英汉两种语言相差甚远这个方面,翻译中大部分问题都起源于两种语言的差异。

关键词：英译汉表达习惯文化背景

1.英语重结构，汉语重语义。先看一个例子：It applies equally to traditional historians who view history as only the external and internal criticism of sources,and to social science historians,who equate their activity with specific techniques。这个句子是个典型的复杂句。从内容上讲，它主要提供两个方面的信息：一是It applies to... historians,二是historians的具体情况；从结构上讲，它是一个主句带两个由who引导的从句。尽管结构复杂、信息量大，这句话在英语里并不紊乱，因为句子结构环环相扣，语义清楚楚：who引导的定语从句放在名词后面修饰这个名词，这是英语中较常见的表达形式，两个从句的语义既相对独立，又和主句连成一体。如果把这个句子改成：It applies equally to traditional historians and to social science historians. Traditional historians(or the former) view history as only the external and internal criticism of sources. Social science historians(or the latter)equate their activity with specific techniques.表达的意思完全一样，但是表达方式略显平淡，这说明英语表达非常重视句子结构，句子结构上的适当安排往往可以达到更好的表达效果。

2.英语多长句，汉语多短句。由于英语重结构，汉语重语义，英语句子往往比较长，汉语句子则常常比较短。( 2) For ex ample, they do not compensate for gross social inequality, and thus do not tell how able an underprivileged youngster mig ht have been had he grown up under more favorable circumstances.

这句话长达31 个单词。从结构上讲, 它是主句( they do not. . . ) + 并列谓语( and do not. . . ) + 宾语

从句( how able an underprivileged youngster mig ht . . . ) + 条件状语从句( had he. . . ) ; 从语义上讲, 它有四层意思: 不能,因此不能,会有多大的才干,如果,。根据对这个句子的结构分析和语义分析, 我们可以把它切分成四个小段:

For ex ample, they do not compensate for gross social inequality, and thus do not tell/ how able an underprivileged

youngster mig ht have been/ had he grow n up under more favorable circumstances.

由于每一小段包含一个意群, 切分后我们就可以试译成:

例如, 它们不能弥补巨大的社会不公, 因此不能说明一个物质条件差的年轻人会有多大才干, 如果他在较好的环境中长大。

3. 英语多前重心, 汉语多后重心。所谓前重心是先说结果后说细节。后重心则是先说细节后说结果。我们再看一例:

There is no agreement whether methodology refers to the concept s peculiar to historical work in

general or to the research techniques appropriate to the various branches of historical inquiry。

根据句子结构和语义分析, 这个句子可分成五段: 主句( There is no. . . ) + 从句( whether. . . ) + 后置定语( peculiar to. . . ) + 选择性并列从句( or. . . ) + 后置定语( appropriate to. . . ) 。从语义上讲, 主句讲的是结果, 从句说的是细节。根据汉语的表达习惯, 中文译文的表达顺序与原文正好相反。

4.英语多被动, 汉语多主动。稍微细心一点的人都会发现, 英语里面经常使用被动结构, 而汉语里却很少使用被动结构。
