Unit 16 Stories高考试卷分块专练练 一 阅读理解提速练 限时35分钟第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)ASigns of a global economic recovery are glimmering, but are they enough to account for taking a major vacation? Well, the world is always bigger than our wallets. One of the simplest options is to find a place that has a lot to offer but hasn't yet been hit by the price inflation that comes with mass popularity. To help travelers in search of value, we've assembled, with the help of professionals from USA Today, CNN and Lonely Planet, a list of destinations that are worth going to while they're still cheap.UkraineIts name translates as “land on the edge”,and this year Ukraine may be on the edge of discovery for budget travelers in search of rich history. Visitors can enjoy its cultural wealth, the warmth of its people and the fact that their daily spending is below $50 (307 yuan). The country's UNESCO World Heritage Sites are cooperating with locals to offer special deals, such as a traditional meal for just a few dollars. It's the kind of travel experience you will recall once the moment has passed, so now is the time to build those memories.South KoreaSouth Korea is a visitorfriendly country. Not only can budget travelers find the basics — from hotel rooms to great meals — at reasonable prices, but the country also has a ton of free parks, discounts and other free services, especially for visitors. For instance, until August 25, a free shuttle bus transports foreign visitors between the capital city of Seoul and Jeonju, a popular tourist destination. A free phone service offers tourists multilingual assistance 24 hours a day.TurkeyTurkey is on the rise, so to get the best of the new at the price of the old, go now. In the last decade, the country's tourism facilities have grown by 67 percent, according to USA Today, and more recently it has emerged as a global airline hub. This country of ancient ruins, historic towns and beckoning beaches is a destination to watch this summer.EgyptPopular resort areas in Egypt, like Sharm El Sheikh, are as relaxing as they ever were — and also less stressful for your wallet. “The overall sentiment is that resort areas like Sharm El Sheikh are very safe,” said Tony Cardoza, president of a US travel agency, in an interview with CNN. “But most vacationers appear to prefer traveling to places that haven't seen as much civil unrest.” That preference has made Egypt a buyer's market. Low demand also has another benefit: smaller crowds. “Clients going now have been able to get pictures of themselves in front of the pyramids with no other tourists blocking the view,” Cardoza said.语篇解读:本文是应用文。

2019届高考英语一轮复习Unit16Stories课时练1阅读理解提速练北师大版选修6

Unit 16 Stories课时练1 阅读理解提速练Ⅰ阅读理解A(2018·唐山一模)A new research brings some good news forlovers of spicy(辛辣的) foods, after finding that eating hot redchili peppers might help to extend lifespan(寿命).Consuming hot red chili peppers might reduce death risk, say Chopan and Littenberg from the research team. In hot peppers, such as Mexico peppers, the strong flavor comes from a compound(化合物),which does not exist in sweet peppers or onions. Studies have suggested that this compound can offer wealth of health benefits.A study of more than 16,000 people in the United States showed that individuals who consumed red chili peppers had a lower risk of death from all causes over an average of 18 years than those who did not eat the spicy food. Compared with participants who did not consume hot red chili peppers, those who did were found to be at a 13 percent reduced risk of all-cause death. For example, a recent study reported by Medical News Today, found that the compound might have the potential to stop breast cancer, while an earlier study linked the compound to a reduced risk of digest system cancers. Still, the available data suggested that hot red chili pepper consumption was most strongly associated with a reduced risk of death from heart disease. While the researchers are unable to identify the specific compound by which red chili peppers might extend lifespan, the team says that it is likely due to the compound that is effectively against obesity(肥胖症).Overall, the team says that these latest findings support those of the 2015 study, linking spicy foods intake to reduced risk o f death by showing “a significant decrease in death associated with hot red chili pepper consumption”. However, Chopan and Littenberg note that the earlier study was only conducted in Chinese adults, so the new research makes these findings more credible.【解题导语】一项新的研究发现,食用红辣椒之类的辛辣食物可能会降低死亡风险,延长人类的寿命。

2019版高三英语北师大版一轮课时提能练:22 选修6 Unit 16 Stories(B) Word版含解析

课时提能练(二十二)选修6Unit 16Stories(B)(对应学生用书第295页)Ⅰ.阅读理解(2017·黄冈检测)On Christmas Day,2003,a woman named Nancy Sue Brown took her daughter and grandchildren to see a movie at an AMC theater. When the movie was over, the crowd made for the exits.A theater employee had just finished mopping the hallway and dutifully placed the “wet floor”sign in the slippery area.No one slipped due to the wet conditions, but someone did manage to knock over the sign. And by the time Ms.Brown got to the area, the sign was lying on the floor. And shortly thereafter,so was she.Her foot got caught in the sign,in a bad way,and she fell.Unfortunately Ms.Brown had undergone a back operation, and the fall caused more damage than it otherwise would have.So she and her husband sued(提起诉讼).AMC argued that the entire point of the “wet floor”sign above was to warn of danger, and therefore, courts should encourage the use by not allowing Brown's case to proceed(继续进行).AMC referred to a case about a December,1998 incident, where a “wet floor”sign, not in use, fell to the floor causing another tripandfall. In that case,Georgia's Court of Appeals ruled in favor of the store, but didn't go so far as to say that“wet floor”signs couldn't give rise to legal liability(责任)in trip-and-fall accidents. In the Brown case, the Supreme Court therefore rejected AMC's argument that the former case applied. But the Browns argued something surprising that the“wet floor”sign was, itself, dangerous, because “using this type of sign in areas passed by lots of customers creates an unreasonable risk of foreseeable harm to the public in the form of tripping hazards(危险).”That's right—the safety sign, used in the way it was designed, was itself dangerous. The court thankfully didn't accept that argument,at least not entirely. But it did conclude that Brown's case could continue to a jury(陪审团)—“a merchant's selection and use of equipment designed to warn customers of one danger that has the potential to expose them to a different one”.【语篇解读】本文主要介绍了布朗夫人在美国一家AMC影院看完电影离开时,被“小心地滑”的警示牌绊倒受伤后,向法院提起诉讼的原因以及法院的审判结果。
2019高考英语一轮基础练Unit16Stories(含解析)北师大版选修6

Unit 16 Stories李仕才Ⅰ阅读理解ANowadays, especially in China, everything seems to favor social intercourse, such as gatherings of friends, KTV, group travel, dining tighter, playing cards and Mahjong, plus the Chinese-style “street-crossing g roup.” Back home, discussions can still be boisterously carried on within the “circle of friends” of WeChat. However, these scenes cannot always ease a sense of loneliness. Zhu Ziqing, a well-known professor of Tsinghua University, signed with emotion: “My loneliness increases as scene becomes much busier.” One popular song today is also called “A lonely man in crowds.” Actually, engaging in social intercourse requires ability, while being alone involves the whole character. These days, it is not easy to ca lm down totally and return to one’s true self. Willpower, intellect and discipline are required. Einstein said: “It is not your working time but your spare time that determines the possibility of whether you will be successful or not.” The “spare time” he referred to could be taken as “spending time by yourself.”Lonely life could be either dull, boring and tasteless or abundant, interesting and colorful, depending on one’s quality, ambition and inspiration.Just as the body constantly requires energy, the mind and soul also demand unceasing inputs. However, information, to processed and integrated(融入)into knowledge, thoughts and feelings, instead of bustle(忙碌)seems to be the right condition. Successful careers in all walks of life worldwide have proved that “the soul grows in peace and talent is nurtured in loneliness”. In a sense, it may be reasonable to say that “Happiness tends to be shallow while loneliness involves profundity”.Man, in fact, needs loneliness more than happy time, and only abundant loneliness can produce quality happiness.1.Which of the following can replace the underlined the word “boisterously” in paragraph 1?A. surprisinglyB. sadlyC. busilyD. peacefully2.What can we infer from the second paragraph?A. Being alone marks people depressed.B. Social intercourse improves our happiness.C. One may feel lonely even when surrounded by peopleD. We should attend social intercourse to decrease our loneliness.3.What can we know from Einstein’s words?A. You should be successful if you spend all your time by yourself.B. You should exercise more if you want to keep your minds healthy.C. You will not become successful if you join in more social intercourse.D. You will be more successful if you can make your lonely time meaningful.4.Which may be the best title for this passage?A. Live On Your OwnB. Happiness and LonelinessC. The secret of successD. Practice Your Social Ability【文章大意】这是一篇议论文,讲述了幸福和孤独之间的关系。

Unit 16 Stories李仕才一、阅读理解ATwo of the saddest words in the English language are “if only”. I live my life with the goal of never having to say those words, because they convey regret, lost opportunities, mistakes, and disappointment. My father is famous in our family for saying, “Take the extra minute to do it right.” I always try to live by the “extra minute” rule. When my children were young and likely to cause accidents, I always tho ught about what I could do to avoid an “if only ” moment, whether it was something minor like moving a cup full of hot coffee away from the edge of a computer, or something that required a little more work such as taping padding (衬垫) onto the sharp corners of a glass coffee table.I don’t only avoid those “if only” moments when it comes to safety. It’s equally important to avoid “if only” in our personal relationships. We all know people who lost a loved one and regretted that they had foregone an opportuni ty to say “I love you” or “I forgive you”. When my father announced he was going to the eye doctor across from my office on Good Friday, I told him that it was a holiday for my company and I wouldn’t be there. But then I thought about the fact that he’s 84 years old and I realized that I shouldn’t give up an opportunity to see him. I called him and told him I had decided to go to work on my day off after all.I know there will still be occasions when I have to say “if only” about something, but my life is definitely better because of my policy of doing everything possible to avoid that eventuality(可能发生的事). And even though it takes an extra minute to do something right, or it occasionally takes an hour or two in my busy schedule to make a personal connection, I know that I’m doing the right thing. I’m buying myself peace of mind and that’s the best kind of insurance for my emotional well-being.1.Which of the following is an example of the “extra minute” rule ?A. Start the car the moment everyone is seated.B. Leave the room for a minute with the iron working.C. Wait for an extra minute so that the steak tastes better.D. Move an object out of the way before it trips someone.2.The author decided to go to her office on Good Friday to __________.A. keep her appointment with the eye doctorB. meet her father who was already an old manC. join in the holiday celebration of the companyD. finish her work before the deadline approaching3.The underlined word “foregone” in Paragraph 3 is closed in meaning to “_________”.A. abandonedB. lackedC. avoidedD. wasted4.What is the best title for the passage ?A. The Emotional Well-beingB. The Two Saddest WordsC. The Most Useful RuleD. The Peace of Mind【文章大意】这篇文章主要讲解的是作者对于最悲哀的两个单词if only 的理解及看法。
1.D 【解析】推理判断题。
根据第二段的句子“When my children were young and likely tocause accidents, I always thought about what I could do to avoid an ‘if only’ moment,”可知,“extra minute”指的是“在发生意外之前防患于未然”,D项(在一个东西绊倒某人之前将它拿走)符合。
故选D。
3.A 【解析】猜测词义题。
根据foregone 所在句子“We all know people who lost a lovedone and regretted that they had foregone an opportunity to say ‘ I love you’ or ‘I forgive you’.”中的lost及regretted 可知此词与opportunity 搭配翻译成“放弃机会”,故选A。
4.B 【解析】标题判断题。
根据第一段第一句话“Two of the saddest words in the Englishlanguage are ‘if only’.”及文章大意,可知本文主要针对最悲哀的两个单词if only 展开话题进行讲解,故选B。
