Characters of Mr Darcy

Brief Introduction

As we all know, Pride and Prejudice is a love story, but to some degree, this book is an illustration of the society at that time. Jane Austen perfectly reflected the relation between property and marriage at her time. Different people have different vivid characteristics in the novel. So, I will take Mr Darcy for example to show his personalities.

Analysis of Mr Darcy

1.wealthy and handsome

Mr Darcy is an extremely wealthy aristocrat. He has a large estate in Derbyshire as well as ten thousand pounds a year. While his friend, Mr Bingley only possesses four or five thousand pounds a year. From this reality, we can draw a conclusion that Mr Darcy is so rich. What’s more, he is a handsome gentleman. As the novel says “The gentleman pronounced him to be a fine figure of a man, the ladies declared he was much handsomer than Mr Bingley, and he was looked at with great admiration for about half the evening.” (p12) From the sentence, we know that Mr Darcy is so noble and attractive to draw so much people’s attention.

2.proud and haughty

From the title “Pride and Prejudice”, we can see that Mr Darcy is so proud. When the ladies are more than gentlemen at a ball, he is just

standing and does nothing. He is arrogant, fancying himself so great.

As you know, Elizabeth is a charming and lively lady, but Mr Darcy coldly said, “She is tolerable, but not handsome enough to tempt me.”

(p13). From this, we can infer Mr Darcy is so fastidious and haughty.

With the development of the story, he falls in love with Elizabeth, but he pretends to ignore her because of pride. For example, “Steady to his purpose, he scarcely spoke the words to her through the whole of Saturday, and though they were at one time left by themselves for half an hour, he adhered most conscientiously to his book, and would not even look at her.” (p76)

3.sincere and generous

According to Mr Darcy’s housekeeper, Mrs Reynolds says that he is always the sweetest-tempered, most generous-hearted boy in the world. In other words, Mr Darcy is liberal and generous,----to give his money freely, to display hospitality, to assist his tenants and relieve the poor. (p106) Mr Darcy is also a good brother because he always gives his sister any pleasure.

In another example, Elizabeth’s yo ungest sister, Lydia eloped with Wickham. This infamous elopement will make people look down upon the Bennets. Fortunately, Mr Darcy helped to solve this problem and covered the disgrace. From the details, he helped Wickham pay debts
