First, ask the students to write a Chinese note that asks for a sick leave of two days. After that ,ask them some questions: Is note a letter? What is the use of a note? What makes up a note? These questions may arouse the students’ interest in how to write note in English.
IV. Notes (便条)
1.Definition
便条是书信的一种形式,特点在于其内容比一般书信更简短,用于询问、留言、通知、要求等。便条分为两种形式:一种是请假条(病假、事假、续假);一种是留言、通知等。2.Notes of Format
便条的基本组成部分是:日期、称呼、正文、署名。
1)日期:写在便条的右上角,经常省去年份,只写月份(用缩写形式)于日期,或者直接用星期几或星期几上午/下午,甚至写出上午/下午的具体钟点。
2)称呼:熟人朋友间可以随便些,直呼其名,不需任何头衔,但请假条和下级对上级的便条称呼仍应保留头衔
3) 正文:用词尽量通俗口语化,简单扼要,把事情说清即可。
4)署名:常省去书信中的结束敬语,一般写上留条人的姓名,关系十分熟的,署上自己的名或姓即可。位置在正文的右下角。
5) 便条可以有题目,也可以省略题目。
3请假条(Asking for Leave)
①Basic Patterns ( 常用句型)
1)I’m writing to ask for a sick leave of three days (a three-day sick leave). 现请病假三天。
2)I enclose the doctor’s certificate and hope you will grant me the leave.附上医生证明,请予准假。
3)I’ go back to school as soon as I recover.病情一好转,我就回来上课。
4) Please excuse my absence from work this morning.请原谅我今早不能来上班。
5)The doctor advised a rest of three more days.医生建议再休息三天。
6)Please give an extension of leave for two days.请准续假两天。
7)I beg to apply for two weeks’ leave from the 10th to the 24th, both weeks inclusive.我请求您准许我从10日起至24日止请两个星期的事假。

除请假条外,便条的另一种常见类型——留言条——具有广泛的用途:访客不遇、委托别人办事、预约、询问、通知、道谢、致歉、电话留言等,均可使用便条,一般都是传递简短信息。比起请假条来,留言条的语言更加简单。如果是给熟悉的人留言,只要写他的姓或名,结尾留你的姓或名即可,无需客套的称呼。时间一般除日期或星期几外,还会加上上午或下午的具体时刻,但基本组成部分和请假条是一致的。

There will often be occasions for us to send a simple, hand-written note to the people concerned—it is necessary and convenient. Therefore, learning how to write various kinds of notes is useful and helpful.
