Background
Women in love was written in 1916, during the first world war：the war exposed the ugliness component of human nature. The destructive force of the technology, the fragility and helplessness of reason lead people to think seriously. The so-called civilization progress become the important source of human alienation and the advanced technology improve the efficiency of mutual slaughter among human beings. What’s worse, the abuse of advanced technology worsen the relationship between human and nature and damage our life environment. Therefore, Lawrence worried about people and our life environment deeply and he shows his great aversion to the drawbacks of the development of technology and the horrible war in his works.
Plot summary
Women in love is Lawrence’s favorite novel. It depicts Ursula and her sister Gudrun’s experience of love. Ursula falls in love with Birkin, the school inspector, while Gudrun has a crush on Gerald, the young mine owner. Life experience leads the two pairs of lovers to an opposite result. Out of different outlook, Gudrun and Gerald bring their love to an end with the death of Gerald in Alps, whereas Ursula and Birkin get married. Through the different consequence of the two pairs of lovers, Lawrence means to explore the possibility of establishing a complete relationship in such developed industrial society when the obstacles between man and man and man and woman.

Theme

However, people view the development of technology as their life purpose to realize their material desire, which is bound to lead to the ignorance of human value. In women in Love, Lawrence exposed the drawbacks that the rapid development of western modern industrial mode of production finally results in the distortion of human nature and the droop of human feelings. In his opinion, if human beings want to grow healthily, they must break down all the external factors which distort human nature, like the drawbacks of the development of industrial, and build a kind of new social order to bring the human nature back.
Love Line — Gudrun and Gerald
Gudrun Gudrun is born in poverty, but she dares to set foot in upper-class society and win the higher class people’s acceptance and respect by her own wisdom and talents of art. She cares very little for fame and gain and disdains vanity. She chooses a kind of artist’s vagabondage instead of marring to a husband who is wealthy and powerful to go into the upper class society. She serves as a representative of a modern lady who is free, independent, experienced and talented.

David Herbert Lawrence,（1885-1930）who was the most controversial and distinctive writer in 20th because of too much pornographic description in his work, was honored as one of the most greatest writer in the history of English literature. Actually, since affected by the psychologist, Freud’s opinion on our mental activities deeply, he adopted so many psychological descriptions as a technique to express the theme of the novel and the disposition or thoughts of main characters in most of his literal works.
