Master of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages
Course Aims:
The MA-TESOL programme prepares English language teachers for schools, universities, and other educational institutions in Asia and elsewhere. Jointly offered by the Faculty of Education and the Centre for Applied English Studies in the Faculty of Arts, the programme is designed for recent university graduates as well as experienced teachers and aims to develop student's understanding of key concepts, theories and research related to Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages.

Admissions Requirements
To be elig ible for admission to the programme, candidates shall hold a Bachelor’s degree in English Language or linguistics or literature with honours from this University or another qualification of equivalent standard from this University or another university or comparable institution accepted for this purpose.
English Language Proficiency Requirement:
A candidate who wishes to be admitted on the basis of a qualification from a university or comparable institution outside Hong Kong of which the language of teaching and/or examination is not English is required to obtain:
① a score of 580
②or above in the paper-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a Test of Written English score of 4.0 or above or a score of 80 in the internet-based TOEFL with a score of 25 or above in the Writing section;
③or a minimum overall band of 6.5 with no subtest lower than 6.0 in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
All non-local students are required to obtain a student visa to study in HKSAR. All applicants for a student visa are required to have a local sponsor. Students coming to HKU should nominate the Centre of Development and Resources for Students (CEDARS) as your visa sponsor by completing and returning to CEDARS an application form for visa sponsorship with all the required documents and payment. Please note that at least 2 months should be allowed for visa processing. It is the responsibility of individual students to make appropriate visa arrangements before they come to Hong Kong.

Interview
Applicants who are short-listed may be invited to attend an interview/test.
Announcement of Offers
Successful applicants will be informed of their admissions results by email shortly after interviews, and will receive an Offer of Admission letter enclosing a Notice of Admission statement shortly after verification of academic qualifications.
Fee: HK$96,000 (payable by 2 instalments)
