As a global firm, Gensler has equipped its offices in China to meet an international standard of information and communication technology, including video conferencing and high-speed data transmission. We confer weekly with the Managing Directors of every Gensler office, and our teams regularly confer with colleagues in London, Tokyo, San Francisco, New York, and other cities who provide technical support and specialist consultation. In addition, we can mobilize specialists in our China offices as projects require to meet their specific needs.
Since 2005, Gensler China has successfully worked on over 7 million square meters of master planning projects and over 5 million square meters of architecture and interior design projects, 3.9 million of which we have currently under construction in China. Our work encompasses projects of every scale and type in more than 45 cities across China.
Client Relationships
Gensler is organized around its relationships with clients. Our firm has around 3,500 active clients across the world, many of which have been with us for decades. This is why 85 percent of current work is repeat business from established clients. We established our Shanghai office to serve offshore companies that wanted to enter the China market. However, our strongest growth has come from China itself. In the past year alone, we have added 43 new clients. They chose us for our ability to serve them effectively in their local cities and markets, while drawing on our global network of design, technical, and specialist expertise. This combination of local presence and worldwide resources is of great value to every Gensler client in China.

We have 125 professionals in our Shanghai and Beijing offices—a combined local and international staff (13 nationalities in total) to serve the needs of our Chinese and offshore clients. Documents are bilingual, for the convenience of the client and others in the process.

A Profile of Gensler China Gensler中国简介
Gensler entered the China market in the 1980’s. In the early 90’s we developed a Hong Kong office to provide services for our international clients who were beginning to expand into the Asian market. By the late 90’s, we were actively engaged in large-scale planning, building design and corporate interiors projects in multiple cities including Shenzhen, Beijing, Qingdao, Shanghai and Xian.
Recognizing the strong efforts underway in China to improve environmental quality, Gensler has emphasized sustainable design as a conscious goal of its work in Asia. This goal has been pursued at all levels - from district planning, which aims to preserve the historic fabric of Chinese cities, to buildings and settings that incorporate sustainable features such as solar shading, natural ventilation and cooling, and the use of reusable materials and products.

In March 2003, Gensler opened an office in Shanghai and a satellite office in Beijing. Gensler works in China as a Wholly Foreign-Owned Enterprise (WFOE). Our license, issued in 2004, allows us to act as an architecture and design consultant. We work with a Local Design Institute that is responsible for building code compliance, construction documentation, and the submittal of drawings to local government agencies for approval.
