Analysis 1: The Pilgrim’s Progress
…a man clothed with rags standing in a certain place, with his face from his own house, a book in his hand, and a great burden upon his back. I looked, and saw him open the book, and read therein; and as he read, he wept and trembled; Christian and, not being able longer to contain, he brake out with a lamentable cry, 一个人穿着破烂的衣服, 站在一个地方,背对着自 saying, "What shall I do?"
Part 5 Question:
What is the difference of literature between the Elizabethan age and the revolution period?
• 2) Elizabethan literature was generally inspiring. It throbbed with youth and hope and vitality. Literature in the Puritan Age expressed age and sadness. Even its brightest hours were followed by gloom and pessimism. • 3) Elizabethan literature was intensely romantic. The romantic spirit sprang from the heart of youth. People believed all things, even the impossible. But in literature of the Puritan period; we can not find any romantic ardor.
Analysis 2: The Pilgrim’s Progress
1. The traveler’s name is Christian, and he represents evBaidu Nhomakorabeary Christian in human world. 2.The figures and places Christian encounters on his journey stand for the various experiences every Christian must go through in the quest for salvation.
3. The religious book also gives a faithful picture of the English society in Bunyan’s age, added here and there with bitter satires upon the ruling classes. In the sense of religion it is a Protestant study which highly praises the doctrine of Protestantism —salvation. In the story Bunyan gives us not only a symbolic picture of London at the time of the Restoration but also a comprehensive satirical picture of the English society and the legal procedure in England in Bunyan’s day.
