Politeness Phenomena in American English and Chinese: A

Cross-cultural Perspective

Abstract

Politeness, as an important part of etiquette, has always been drawing attention. But because people grow and live in a different environment, and the cultural background is different, the polite expressions and criteria are different. On the one hand, it is a symbol of social civilization and improvement. On the other hand, it can assist people to build and defend good interpersonal relationship. China and America are the representative of classic and contemporary countries, historical and cultural variance make the current language and cultural variance become a problem. In Chinese culture, it is generally believed that some expressions or acts of politeness in American culture can not be understood by the local people. So , it is often necessary friction between Chinese and American people. Hence, this article mainly from the perspective of cross cultural analysis of the phenomenon of Chinese and American politeness.

First and foremost, it describes the notion of cross-cultural communication and politeness. Then the differences between the Chinese and American Politeness phrases in daily life are addressed, Which includes greeting and forms of Address, compliments and request. At last, the variation trend of Chinese and American Politeness Expressions
