高中英语阅读理解限时训练

A

You’ve got that feeling again. You know you’ve forgotten something, but you can’t quite put your finger on it. Important files from work? Income tax paid? And then you remember—you’ve forgotten to pick up your favorite black dress from the drycleaner’s. Now you’ll have to imagine something out of the cupboard for your dinner date tonight. Sound familiar?

According to the survey(调查), 43 percent of people feel that they have a poor memory or difficulty concentrating. But the good news is that with a quick mental exercise, you can easily repair your mind and memory. After all, it’s not only our bodies that need exercise, but also that all-important muscle, the brain! If you want to remember where you put your keys, be more effective at work or just feel more in control, learning a few new techniques could be the answer. Invest a few minutes a day, say the experts, and you’ll be rewarded with better long-term performance.

Patrick Holford, author of Good Nutrition for the Mind, agrees. “Alzheimer’s (老年痴呆症) takes 40 years to develop and, contrary to popular belief, only one in 100 cases is caused by genetic factors. The secret to a good memory is good nutrition, exercise and using your mind as much as possible. If you don’t use it, you lose it.”

Read on to discover exactly how simple exercises can give your brain, memory and concentration a much needed boost (提高).

Writing about his grandmother’s battle with cancer was difficult, said 11-year-old Sam Scott. But it was a story he believed that needed to be told.

Scott and his classmates at Monroe Elementary School entered the creative communication essay contest. Twenty-six were chosen to be published in an anthology(选集) book of literature, Celebrating What Is Important to Me.

In their essays —limited to 250 words —students were asked to give “an opinion about something that had affected their life,” said Carie Tragesser, a teacher at Monroe.

In his essay, Scott said his grandmother was amazed when she found out she had cancer because she had no symptoms(症状). “The cancer seemed to take away her life,” he said. “When it came time for her surgery, she was so frightened that she could barely talk. The surgery was a success, but the 13 weeks of radiation(放射疗法) was intense,” he said. “Today, she is a 13-year c ancer survivor,” Scott said.“She has a bright and promising future ahead.”

Scott said he wrote about his grandmother because he wanted people to be more aware of the need for cancer study. “When I interviewed her, it was hard for her to talk about it,” Sc ott said. “But cancer needs to be studied more.”

Students are now in the process of proofreading(校对) their essays before they are published. Because a large number of essays submitted by Monroe students were accepted, the school will be given a “Writing Achievement Award” —an honor given to the top 10 of the schools that enter the contest.
