Exercise 1

Decide whether each of the following sentences could be a topic sentence for a paragraph. On the line before the sentence, write: TS if it is acceptable as a topic sentence, G if it is too general, or SP if it is too specific.

Exercise 2

Each of the following paragraphs needs a topic sentence. After reading each paragraph, choose one of the three sentences below as the best topic sentence. Write the letter on the line given.

1. ___ They think that these tests measure one general type of intelligence but do not test or measure enough of our capabilities. That is, IQ tests usually test in the areas of language and logic (math). However, there may be other types of intelligence, especially in more creative areas (such as music), that cannot be measured with paper-and-pencil tests. In other words, some people believe that testing and measuring intelligence is more complicated and not as exact as standardized tests make us believe.

a. Some people do not believe that IQ tests can measure intelligence in any way.

b. Some people do not believe that IQ tests can truly define or measure intelligence.

c. Some people believe that only one kind of IQ test is an accurate measure of intelligence.

Therefore, career interests for these people often include such professions as teacher, lawyer, politician, translator, writer, and journalist.

Because of these interests and characteristics, people with a high level of this type of intelligence may become scientists, engineers, computer programmers, accountants, and mathematicians.

c. The ability to reason, solve problems, and work with numbers is often evident in people with strong mathematical/logical intelligence.
