A.Cold and frightening.B.Dirty and crowded.C.Empty and dead.D.Unusual and unpleasant.19.The underlined word “trickling” in the last paragraph means _____..A.rushing out suddenly B.shining brightlyC.flowing slowly in drops D.appearing slowly20.Why didn’t the man raise his head when the writer came near?A.He was annoyed at being seen by the writer.B.He was angry at being disturbed by the writer.C.He was probably fast asleep.D.He was probably murdered. In the summer of 1978 an English farmer was driving his tractor through a field of wheat when he discovered that some of his wheat was lying flat on the ground. The flattened wheat formed a circle about six meters across. Around this circle were four smaller circles of flattened wheat. The five circles were in a formation like five dots. During the following years, farmers in England found the strange circles in their fields more and more often. The circles are called “crop circles” because they appear in the fields of grain ― usually wheat or corn. The grain in the circles lies flat on the ground but is never broken; it continues to grow, and farmers can later harvest it. Farmers always discover the crop circles in the morning, so the circles probably form at night. They appear only in the months from May to September. At first, people thought that the circles were ahoax. Probably young people were making them as a joke, or farmers were making them to attract tourists. To prove that the circles were a hoax, people tried to make circles exactly like the ones that farmers had found. They couldn’t do it. They couldn’t enter a field of grain without leaving tracks, and they couldn’t flatten the grain without breaking it.Many people believe that beings from outer space are making the circles to communicate with us from far away and that the crop circles are messages from them.Scientists who have studied the crop circles suggested several possibilities. Some scientistssay that a downward rush of wind leads to the formation of the circles — the same downward lash of air that sometimes causes an airplane to crash. Other scientists say that forces within the earth cause the circles to appear. There is one problem with all these scientific explanations: crop circles often appear in formations, like the five-dot formation. It is hard to believe that any natural force could form those.21.In the summer of 1978, an English farmer discovered in his field that ______. A.some of his wheat had been damagedB.some of his wheat had fallen onto the groundC.his grain was growing up in circlesD.his grain was moved into several circles22.The underlined word "hoax" in Paragraph 3 is probably ______.A.an attempt made to fool peopleB.a special way to plant cropsC.an experiment for the protection of cropsD.a research on the force of winds23.Which of the following may prove that the crop circles are not made by man?A.The farmers couldn’t step out of the field.B.The farmers couldn’t make the circles round.C.The farmers couldn’t leave without footprints.D.The farmers couldn’t keep the wheat straight up.24.One explanation given by scientists for the crop circles is that they are made by _____. A.airplane crashes B.air movementC.unknown flying objects D.new farming techniquesNew York — Wednesday, October fifteenth, is the first Global Hand Washing Day. Activities are planned in more than twenty countries to get millions of people in the developing world to wash their hands with soap.Experts say people around the world wash their hands but very few use soap at so-called critical moments. These include after using the toilet, after cleaning a baby and before touching food.Global Hand Washing Day is the idea of the Public-Private Partnership for Hand Washing with Soap. The goal, they say, is to create a culture of hand washing with soap. Theorganizers say all soaps are equally effective at removing disease-causing germs (病菌). They say the correct way to wash hands is to wet your hands with a small amount of water and cover them with soap. Rub it into all areas, including under the fingernails. Then, rinse well under running water. Finally, dry your hands with a clean cloth. The Partnership says soap is important because it increases the time that people spend washing. Soap also helps to break up the dirt that holds most of the germs. And it usually leaves a pleasant smell, which increases the likelihood that people will wash again. It also says washing with soap before eating and after using the toilet could save more lives than any medicine. It could help reduce cases of diarrhea (痢疾), which is the second leading cause of child deaths, killing more than one and a half million children a year, by almost half. 25.The most suitable title for the text would be _____.A.Hand Washing Brings Good HealthB.Hand Washing Gets a Day of Its OwnC.It Is Soap That MattersD.Partnership for Hand Washing Takes Action26.The Partnership creates Global Hand Washing Day to _____.A.call on people to wash handsB.help the developing countriesC.promote the importance of soap in hand washingD.make a culture of hand washing in the third world27.The following facts can explain why soap is important EXCEPT that _____.A.soap gives people a longer hand washing timeB.soap helps to get rid of more germs off handsC.soap attracts people to do more hand washingD.soap gets people into the habit of washing hands28.According to the last paragraph, diarrhea is a disease that _____.A.kills half of the kids in developing countriesB.causes the greatest number of child deathsC.can be prevented by washing hands with soapD.makes soap stand out in hand washingOne of the main decisions you must make when traveling is deciding where to stay. A goodplace to stay can often make a holiday. Whether you are looking for a classy hotel or a night under the stars, we can guide you through your different options.Bed and BreakfastAn English invention, bed and breakfasts offer exactly what they suggest, a bed for the night and breakfast in the morning. People who hate the anonymity of hotels but want more luxury than a hostel often ch oose to stay at bed and breakfasts. “B&B’s”, usually someone’s private home, are often found in the countryside.HostelsFor those traveling on a tight budget, hostels are the best accommodation option. Informal places usually with a friendly youthful vibe(氛围), they offer dormitory beds for rent. Bathrooms are usually down the hall.Remember to check reviews by previous guests online before you book your hostel.Couch SurfingAn unusual but interesting option, couch surfing is a growing trend among young internationals. The idea is that you become a member of the online couch-surfing community (www. couchsurfing. com) and then when you travel, look up other members in that country and ask to stay on their couch (沙发). Most hosts will suggest sightseeing trips and take you out in the evening, making it a great way to see things that aren’t in your guidebook. And remember, it may be free but don’t forget to offer to buy your host a drink or dinner. CampingSleeping under the stars! For budget travelers staying at camping grounds is the cheapest way to travel. The drawback is that you have to carry a tent with you. Camping grounds can be found across Europe, America and Australia. However, if you intend on camping in busy cities, check first where the nearest campsite is. More often than not, they are on the outskirts, which can mean lengthy bus rides into town when you want to eat or see the sights. 29.Hostels are popular among budget travelers because they provide _____.A.a friendly atmosphereB.dormitory beds for saleC.reviews by previous guestsD.beds and bathrooms as well30.The advantage of couch surfing is that _____.A.you don’t have to pay any moneyB.you can have a couch to sleep onC.you can explore the nightlife thereD.the host will charge you for sightseeing31.The disadvantage of camping is that you have to ______.A.sleep in the open airB.take some extra articlesC.camp near big cities for safetyD.take a long distance bus to the campsites32.You want a better but not too expensive place to stay, you may choose _____.A.Bed and Breakfast B.HostelsC.Couch Surfing D.CampingEducation is an expensive part of American life. Its size is matched by its variety. Differences in American schools compared with those found in the majority of other countries lie in the fact that education here has long been intended for everyone. Schools are expected to meet the needs of every child, regardless of ability, and also the needs of society itself. This means that public schools offer more than academic subjects. It surprises many people when they come here to find high schools offering such courses as typing, sewing, radio repair, computer programming or driver training, along with traditional academic subjects such as mathematics, history, and languages. Students choose their courses depending on their interests, future goals, and level of ability. The basic goal of American education is to develop every child to the utmost of his or her own possibilities, and to give each one a sense of community.Schools have traditionally played an important role in creating national unity and “Americanizing” the millions of immigrants who have poured into this country from many different backgrounds and origins. Schools still play a large role in the community, especially in the small towns. The teaching may seem unfamiliar to many, not only because it is informal, but also because there is not much emphasis on learning facts. Instead, Americans try to teach their children to think for themselves and to develop their own intellectual and creative abilities. Students spend much time learning how to use materials, libraries, statistics, and computers. Americans believe that if children are taught to______and to research well, they will be ableto find whatever facts they need throughout the rest of their lives. Knowing how to solve problems is considered more important than the accumulation (积累) of facts. This is America’s answer to the searching question that thoughtful parents all over the world are asking themselves in the fast-moving time, “How can one prepare today’s child for a tomorrow that one can neither predict nor understand?”33.The underlined words “reason well” probably means _____.A.persuade firmly B.list the reasons clearlyC.think logically D.conclude immediately34.It is implied in the passage that _____.A.all high-school students take the same coursesB.every student must take practical ability training coursesC.every public school offers the same academic subjectsD.the subjects every student takes may vary35.American schools place great emphasis on the learners’ _____.A.knowledge B.accumulation of factsC.creativity D.ability to work with hands36.What makes American education different from others’?A.The large number of schools.B.The variety of the courses.C.Its consideration for immigrants.D.The basic goal of the education.四、短文改错37.此题要求改正所给短文中的错误。

AIs it possible to persuade mankind to live without war? War is an ancient practice which has existed for at least six thousand years. It was always bad and usually foolish, but in the past, the human race managed to live with it. Modern cleverness has changed this. Either man will end the existence of war, or war will end the existence of man. For the present, it is nuclear weapons that cause the most serious danger, but bacteriological or chemical weapons may, before long, offer an even greater threat. If we succeeded in ending the existence of nuclear weapons, our work will not be done. It will never be done until we have succeeded in ending war. To do this, we need to persuade mankind to look up on international problems in a new way not as contests of force, in which the victory goes to the side which is most skillful in killing people, but by settling in accordance with agreed rules of law. It is not easy to change very old mental habits, but this is what must be attempted. There are those who say that the acceptance of this or that ideology would prevent war.I believe this to be a big mistake. All ideologies are based upon dogmatic statements (强词夺理) ,which are, at best, doubtful, and at worst, totally false. Their supporters believe in them so deeply that they are willing to go to war in support of them. The movement of world opinion during the past few years has been very largely such as we can welcome. It has become a common place that nuclear war must be avoided. Of course very difficult problems remain in the world, but the spirit in which they are coming nearer to is a better one than it was some years ago. It has begun to be thought, even by the powerful men who decide whether we shall live or die, that negotiations should reach agreements even if both sides do not find these agreements wholly satisfactory. It has begun to be understood that the important struggle nowadays is not between different countries but between man and the atom bomb.21.This passage implies that war is now_______.A. worse than in the pastB. as bad as in the pastC. not as dangerous as in the pastD. as necessary as in the past22.From Paragraph 2 we learn that the writer of the passage_______.A. is a supporter of some modern ideologiesB. does not think that the acceptance of any ideologies could prevent warC. believes that the acceptance of some ideologies could prevent warD. does not doubt the truth of any ideologies23.According to the writer,_______.A. war is the only way to solve international argumentsB. war will be less dangerous because of the improvement of weaponsC. it is impossible for people to live without warD. war must be ended if man wants to surviveBRetirement should be time of joy and freedom. However, for some people retirement comes with feelings of depression, which makes life difficult for them.Retirement is a major life change. Even good changes usually involve some kinds of loss. When you retire, you find yourself lacking whatever working used to provide. That could include, for example, 1. knowing you’re working for society, 2. getting admiration from your skills, 3. having “aha” moments when you solve problems, 4. having people to socialize with, and 5. simply having a place to go and a reason to get out of bed every day. For most people, there’s a financial loss, too. Also, retirement age is a time when a lot of pe ople have to deal with losing their parents or having serious health problems of their own.Because of all these, retirees are more likely to get depressed.Depression is very harmful. First, depression can make physical health problems worse. Second, it takes a toll on relationships, because it can make people angry. Third, it’s hard to get much done when you’re depressed. What can we do to overcome the feelings of depression? First, do all the things that help depression in general: drink enough water, exercise, talk to friends, have a hobby, laugh, and spend time in nature. If you feel depressed more often than not, it’s probably time to talk to a doctor about your feelings. Second, it’s important to keep busy and get out of the house when you can. Make specific plans with friends. Take a class Volunteer. Or just make sure you start each day with some kind of goal. Third, try to focus on what you’ve gained by retiring. Think about what you may have now that you wished you had before you were able to retire. For example, days that are less stressful, a chance to rest and take better care of your body, more time for your family and yourself. To write, to start a hobby and to learn something new are all new possibilities. Finally, tell your story. You’ve liv ed a long time and you become an oral historian each time you talk with someone about your experiences. You can also write in a journal or make a video recording of your memories. Telling your stories can help you look back on your life and career with a sense of wholeness and achievements.24.People may find life very hard after they retire because of ___________.A. freedomB. nervousnessC. discouragement (losing heart)D. hard work25.All the following can cause the retirees’ unpleasant feelings EXCEPT _______________.A. they will suffer from financial lossB. they have to support their parentsC. they may lose the reason to get up earlyD. they may have fewer people to socialize with26.The underlined sentence in Paragraph 4 means ________________.A. i t makes people’s relationships unusualB. it makes people’s relationships in peaceC. it makes people’s relationships in dangerD. it makes people stay in touch with each other.27.What would be the best title for the passage?A. Depression and RetirementB. Depression During Retirement Is HarmfulC. Reasons for Depression During RetirementD. How to Overcome Depression During RetirementCYou may have heard adults say they are un comfortable in the morning without a cup of coffee. One reason they may feel that way is that coffee contains caffeine(咖啡因). Caffeine occurs naturally in coffee, tea, and cocoa beans, which are used to make chocolate. But now food makers are adding it to many products, from potato chips to water. The US government is especia lly worried about the problem. That’s why the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is studying the health effects of caffeine on young people. Studies show that too much caffeine can make people nervous and unable to sleep. What’s more, caffeine is habit-forming. Those who consume it regularly and stop suddenly may experience headaches and feel tired. One of the biggest concerns is the large amount of caffeine added to so-called energy drinks, like Red Bull. A 12-ounce can of cola has about 35 milligrams of caffeine. A similar serving of Red Bull contains more than three times that amount. The Institute of Medicine is also working on caffeine-safety measures. “Teenagers should not drink beverages that contain caffeine. They should be aware of caffeine’s effects on health and on how the brain works. Take, for example, teenagers who consume caffeine to stay awake and study for a test. They will remember less of what they juststudied,” said Stallings, a member of the institute.Companies that make products with added caffeine claim they do not advertise them to kids. However, there is no law to stop children from buying them. So the FDA needs to set limits on caffeine, especially in energy drinks. As for added caffeine in foods, the government should just say no. If not, the amount of caffeine should be printed on food labels to remind consumers. The government must do that.Doctors say kids should avoid caffeine. If you need extra energy, try these natural boosters: eat right, exercise, and get plenty of sleep.28.What is the US government particularly concerned about?A. The fact that coffee contains caffeine.B. The measures of avoiding caffeine’s effects.C. The practice of adding caffeine to foods.D. The practice of using caffeine to make chocolate.29.Red Bull is listed in the third paragraph as an example of _____.A. drinks which contain much caffeineB. caffeine’s effects on healthC. teenagers’ addiction to caffeineD. people’s concern about teenagers’ health30.Paragraph 5 is mainly about _____.A. the process of the government’s controlling the use of caffeineB.the measures of protecting teenagers from caffeine’s effectsC. the government’s responsibility of taking care of teenagersD. the risk of buying products containing caffeine nowadays31.The author may agree that _______.A. getting enough sleep can make people energeticB. headaches and feeling tired are common in teenagersC. food makers don’t add much caffeine to many products nowD. caffeine is good and useful for teenagers’ studyDMost people know precious gemstones (宝石) by their appearances. An emerald flashes deep green, a ruby seems to hold a red fire inside, and a diamond shines like a star. It’s more difficult to tell where the gem was mined, since a diamond from Australia or Arkansas may appear the same to one from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. However, recently, a team of scientists has found a way to identify a gemstone’s origin.Beneath the surface of a gemstone, on the tiny level of atoms and molecules(分子), lie clue s to its origin. At this year’s meeting of the Geological Society of America in Minneapolis, Catherine McManus reported on a technique that uses lasers (激光) to clarify these clues and identify a stone’s homeland. McManus directs scientific research at Materialytics, in Killeen,Texas. The company is developing the technique. “With enough data, we could identify which country, which mining place, even the individual mine a gemstone comes from,” McManus told Science News. Some gemstones, including many diamonds, come from war-torn countries. Sales of those “blood minerals” may encourage violent civil wars where innocent people are injured or killed. In an effort to reduce the trade in blood minerals, the U.S. government passed law in July 2010 that requires companies that sell gemstones to determine the origins of their stones. To figure out where gemstones come from, McManus and her team focus a powerful laser on a small sample of the gemstone. The technique is called laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy. Just as heat can turn ice into water or water into steam, energy from the laser changes the state of matter of the stone. The laser changes a miniscule part of the gemstone into plasma, a gas state of matter in which tiny particles(微粒)called electrons separate from atoms. The plasma, which is superhot, produces a light pattern. (The science of analyzing this kind of light pattern is called spectroscopy.) Different elements produce different patterns, but McManus and her team say that gemstones from the same area produce similar patterns. Materialytics has already collected patterns from thousands of gemstones, including more than 200 from diamonds. They can compare the light pattern from an unknown gemstone to patterns they do know and look for a match. The light pattern acts like a signature, telling the researchers the origin of the gemstone. In a small test, the laser technique correctly identified the origins of 95 out of every 100 diamonds. For gemstones like emeralds and rubies, the technique proved successful for 98 out of every 100 stones. The scientists need to collect and analyze more samples, including those from war-torn countries, before the tool is ready for commercial use.Scientists like Barbara Dutrow, a mineralog ist from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, find the technique exciting. “This is a basic new tool that could provide a better fingerprint of a material from a particular locality,” she told Science News.32.We learn from Paragraph 1 that __________.A. an emerald and a ruby are names of diamonds.B. it’s not difficult to tell where the gem was mined.C. appearances help to identify the origin of gemstones.D. diamonds from different places may appear the same.33.Why did the U.S. government pass law that requires companies selling gemstones to determine the origins of their stones?A. To look for more gemstones.B. To encourage violent civil wars.C. To reduce the trade in blood minerals.D. To develop the economy.34.Which of the following facts most probably helps McManus and her team in identifying the origin of stones?A. Heat can turn ice into water o r water into steam.B. Gemstones from the same area produce similar light patterns.C. Laser can change a miniscule part of the gemstone into plasma.D. Materialytics has already collected patterns from thousands of gemstones. 35.From the last two paragraphs, what can be inferred about the laser technique?A. It is ready for commercial use.B. People can use the new tool to find more gemstones.C. It can significantly reduce the gemstones trade in blood minerals.D. It will bring about a revolutionary change in identifying the origin of minerals. 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
