ALarry was on another of his underwater expeditions(探险) but this time, it was different. He decided to take his daug hter along with him. She was only ten years old. This would b e her first trip with her father on what he had always been fam ous for.Larry first began diving when he was his daughter's age. Simil arly, his father had taken him along on one of his expeditions. Since then, he had never looked back. Larry started out by re nting diving suits from the small diving shop just along the sho re. He had hated them. They were too big or too small. Then, there was the instructor. He gave him a short lesson before allowing him into the water with his father. He had made an exc eption. Larry would never have been able to go down without at least five hours of theory and another similar number of ho urs on practical lessons with a guide. Children his age were n ot even allowed to dive. After the first expedition, Larry's later diving adventures only g ot better and better. There was never a dull moment. In his bl ack and blue suit and with an oxygen tank fastened on his ba ck, Larry dived from boats into the middle of the ocean. Dang erous areas did not prevent him from continuing his search. S ometimes, he was limited to a cage underwater but that did n ot bother him. At least, he was still able to take photographs o f the underwater creatures.Larry's first expedition without his father was in the Cayman Is lands. There were numerous diving spots in the area and Larr y was determined to visit all of them. Fortunately for him, a m an offered to take him around the different spots for free. Larr y did not even know what the time was, how many spots he di ved into or how many photographs he had taken. The diving s pots afforded such a wide array of fish and sea creatures that Larry saw more than thirty varieties of creatures.Larry looked at his daughter. She looked as excited as he had been when he was her age. He hoped she would be able to continue the family tradition. Already, she looked like she was much braver than had been then. This was the key to a succe ssful underwater expedition.1. In what way was this expedition different for Larry?A. His daughter had grown up.B. He had become a famous diver.C. His father would dive with him.D. His daughter would dive with him.2. What can be inferred from Paragraph 2?A. Larry had some privileges.B. Larry liked the rented diving suits.C. Little did they know that they were being watched — a great white shark was drawing near. All of a sudden, Shirley heard a scream. Albert was being pull ed down by something. His head reappeared with blood. Albe rt cried out in agony, “Get away, Shirley! Get away! It’s a shar k!” Albert didn’t want her help.Shirley was too frightened and shocked to move. Albert’s wor ds rang in her ears. After what seemed like a long time, she tu rned toward shore and began swimming for her life. But then she stopped. She could not leave her friend. She had to help him if she could. The water was full of red blood. She reached for Albert’s hand and then pulled back in terror. She wrapped her arm around Albert’s chest. He was alive. Shirley began kicking her feet an d stroking(划水) with her free arm. The two friends began the slow journey toward shore. Would the shark return? Would it bring its friend s? Shirley was getting tired. Albert’s body seemed to get heavier every second. But she wouldn’t let go. She wouldn’t leave her friend. Finally, Shirley could touch bottom. At this point, she was exh austed. She could go no farther. She tried to scream for help but her voice was so weak. Nobody would be able to hear tha t. Miraculously(奇迹般地), Joe was fishing some distance down the beach. His eyes for some reason turned. He could hardly believe his eyes. Joe began running toward Shirley and Albert. He then flung(挥动) his cast like a cowboy with his rope. The line perfectly lan ded beside Shirley and Albert. Shirley wrapped it around her waist and Joe dragged them into safety. By this time, many p eople saw the trouble and ran to help. Soon Albert was taken to the hospital but died two hours later. Many of us will never be in a situation to sacrifice our lives for someone else like Shirley and Albert. B My first impression of Miss Vicki was a highly authoritative (权威的) person towering over me. She spoke in a loud voice and the earth shook whenever she marched. That was in the first year of high school she was a knowledgeable literature teacher then. However, during my first year in school, she struck terror into my heart (使我但战心惊),and everyone else’s of course. Just the mention of her name made the most unruly classes silent. Nevertheless, the two years of junior high passed by rather quickly. Soon, I went to senior high class, I had worked hard and gotten the subject combination that I wished for. Together with a group of old friends, I soon settled down in class comfortably. To everyone’s surprise, she was fortunate enough to be my teacher that year. I was shocked when I heard the news. This time round, however, I decided not to hide in terror whenever she was near. I decided to face the fact that we were going to meet each other for the next 365 days. Instead of trying too hard to lick her boots, I tried my best to be my natural self in front of her. Still, I could not shake off the ice-cold impression that she put in my heart. Truly, her jokes sometimes sent me into fits of laughter, yet at other times these jokes simply fell flat the moment she told them. My lovely class, however, was always ready to laugh at the right time of her amusing stories. After all, we would not want to run the risk of provoking (激怒) her.

AI’m Evan Ducker. I’m just like every other 15-year-old boy, except I was born with a red birthmark. Some birthmarks are signs of serious medical conditions. I’m very fortunate—mine isn’t, I pretty much live a regular life, except for people asking me about it all the time, which can get annoying (恼人的) sometimes. When I was about 4 years old, I asked my mom why there weren’t any characters with birthmarks in the books she would read to me. When we went to the library, we realized there weren’t any available for little kids. Worse than that, the books available to older kids and adults described characters with birthmarks as unattractive. So I decided to write my own.I based the story on all the real things that happened in my life. But instead of people, the characters in the book are real animals from the Galapagos Islands, including red-footed booby birds (鲣鸟). I picked a booby bird as the main character because the birds have red feet due to a vascular (血管的) condition, similar to a human birthmark! It was really tough to get my book published. It took a long time because a lot of publishers refused to publish it. They would say there wasn’t a big enough market for a book about birthmarks. But my mom never gave up trying to help make my dream come true. And in 2005, she finally took her own money and self-published Buddy Booby’s Birthmark. After it was published, I got letters from readers all over the world. They all shared their stories and thanked me for sharing mine. T eachers wrote to tell me that my book changed the way classmates treated each other and that my book was helping kids to accept and appreciate their differences. Then, as more teachers started reading my book, I created a free global reading event, the “International Buddy Booby’s Birthmark Read—Along for T olerance and Awareness”.1.The author’s birthmark seems to .A.be easy to removeB. annoy him all the timeC. cause serious health problemsD. bring him some trouble2.What the author found in the library made him .A.regretfulB. disappointedC. stressedD. bored 3.What did the publishers think of the author’s book?A.It wouldn’t sell well.B. She spoke in a loud voice and the earth shook whenever she marched. That was in the first year of high school she was a knowledgeable literature teacher then. However, during my first year in school, she struck terror into myheart (使我但战心惊),and everyone else’s of course. Just the mention of her name made the most unruly classes silent.Nevertheless, the two years of junior high passed by rather quickly. Soon, I went to senior high class, I had worked hard and gotten the subject combination that I wished for. T ogether with a group of old friends, I soon settled down in class comfortably.T o everyone’s surprise, she was fortunate enough to be my teacher that year. I was shocked when I heard the news. This time round, however, I decided not to hide in terror whenever she was near. I decided to face the fact that we were going to meet each other for the next 365 days. Instead of trying too hard to lick her boots, I tried my best to be my natural self in front of her.Still, I could not shake off the ice-cold impression that she put in my heart. Truly, her jokes sometimes sent me into fits of laughter, yet at other times these jokes simply fell flat the moment she told them. My lovely class, however, was always ready to laugh at the right time of her amusing stories. After all, we would not wantto run the risk of provoking (激怒) her.Unluckily, life was not to remain boring. One day we received news that Miss Vicki was to leave Singapore for the Philippines where she would take part in a voluntary teaching program for the poor. We did not know what to say actually. Many non-native English speakers have no idea what professors in the U.S. expect from a college paper. A college paper is a piece of writing than can be as long as 20 or more pages. Even native English-speaking college students struggle with how to succeed with such a difficult responsibility.Deborah Dessaso is the Writing Resource Coordinator at the University of the District of Columbia. She says college writing is very different from what many students experience earlier in their education. Most U.S. high schools teach students how to write five paragraph essays. Students are often unprepared for the amount of research they have to do for a college paper.Nabila Hijazi is one of the assistant directors of the University of Maryland Writing Center. Hijazi is also an international student from Syria in the second year of her PhD program in English studies. She says the language barrier is not the biggest problem for students whose first language is not English. In a traditional paper, the first paragraph often contains the thesis statement. This statement is a one-sentence summary of the paper's main argument. The first paragraph of a college paper, or any paper, is usually the most challenging. The first paragraph is also the most important because it will guide the structure and show the voice of the entire paper. But not every type of writing is the same. There are also case studies and field reports in addition to traditional papers.Dessaso says that the best option for a student who wants improve their writing is to readReading examples of the type of paper your professor expects you to write can be very helpful. Professors sometimes provide examples. Y ou can also search the Internet for examples of papers about similar topics. But, you should never copy another person's work. Professors will find out if the work is copied and you will get in a lot of trouble.Hijazi also says that writing a paper takes time. Students should let other students read their work and listen to criticism.9.What do you know about a college paper?A.College students also call it a five-paragraph essay.B.It is easy for native English-speaking college students.C.It usually presents the theme in the first two paragraphs.D.The length of the paper is beyond expectation.10.According to Deborah Dessaso we can know that .A.American high school students do better in college writing.B.reading similar articles cam make you gain much bee internet benefit.C.your professor can give you clues on how to do your writing.D.surfing the Internet is an easy way to complete your writing.11.How did the author develop the passage?A.By making comparisonB. Never Give up When Y ou Are WritingDIn the past 24 hours, I have been gifted with two amazing opportunities for kindness. The first happened yesterday. On my way home I saw a small dog running across the very busy street. He ran into the neighborhood, so I went off in search of him in hoping that I could reunite him with his owners. After a cat and mouse game, he finally decided I was worthy of at least a little of his trust and came close enough to me for me to grab him. After taking him to be scanned for a microchip, I learned that he had disappeared eight months ago from his owners who lived an hour and a half away. As I had some free time , I drove him back to his rightful owners. He and his human mommy were so glad to see each another! It gave me a good smile to end the year. This morning my family and I went to a friend’s home to help her get her things back in order. She was one of the unfortunate people whose home was recently destroyed by the Rowlett, TX tornado. Her home was a total loss. Our job today was to help her sort through the debris and find anything with actual value that she might want to take with her.My husband helped to move furniture and other things to storage while our younger children helped clean up the yard. By the time we were done today, there was no denying that the home had met with disaster, we had gone far to restore order from the chaos that had been there before. My thought in entering the day was that our friend, who had been having trouble sleeping, was being affected by that chaos more negatively. I hoped that if we could give a hand, she would finally start to feel some sense of peace and allow herself the much-needed rest she so deserved. She posted on Facebook just a little while ago that for he first time she was sleeping at night. For me, that is the greatest gift I could give her. What a wonderful and deeply meaningful way to begin the year!13.In the end the dog dared to come close to the author .A.because it loved to play with a cat and a mouseB. because it lost his way in the streetC. because it thought the author wouldn’t harm himD. because it knew the author well14.The author and her family come to help her friend .A.as soon as the Rowlett, TX tornado leftB. after she knew hr friend’s troubleC. when she got a call from her husbandD. because she knew her friend was alone15.After reading the message posted on Facebook .A.the author felt as if a big burden had been lifted from her mindB.the author knew she would get a pretty good giftC.the author encouraged her family to do kindness againD.the author knew her friend get rid of sleep problems第二部分:英语知识运用(满分30 分)阅读下面短文,掌握其大意,然后从各题所给的四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

Despite the difficulty of adapting original works, these popular novels on the Internet were screened one by one. Some enjoyed a great success while some were criticized by the audiences. My SunshineMy Sunshine is a TV drama adapted from Gu Man's novel of the same title. It stars Wallace Chuang and Tang Yan, premiering(初次上演) in January, 2015. The drama portrays a man and a woman's reunion and long-lasting romance after seven years of separation. The novel itself has been popular on the Internet and was published in 2005. Wallace Chuang soon rose to become a romantic icon among female viewers because of the role he played in the adaptation, presenting an ideal image of lover to the audiences. The Lost tombThe Lost Tomb is an action and adventure TV adaptation of a popular online novel by Xu Lei. This is the first seasonal online TV series in China and the novel is scheduled to be dramatized in eight seasons, one season for each year. The first season was released in June of 2015. The novel series of the same name is about five people's adventure in ancient tombs, and it enjoyed a wide readership since it was released online in 2006. Thus the adapted TV series had been accordingly highly expected by its fans but turned out to be disappointing. Although there were 24,000,000 hits on the web within the first two minutes of its debut(初次登台), the season was later criticizedby the audiences for its weak storyline and poor quality. Some lines of the series even became jokes on the social media.Nirvana in FireNirvana in Fire is also adapted from an online novel of the same name written by Hai Yan, the adaptation for the first time found its way on the screen in September 2015. Staring Hu Ge and Liu Tao, the series shows a talented military strategist endeavoring to clear his name through continuous fights. The fictional characters and dynasty let the adaptation smartly avoid being criticized for not sticking to historical accuracy. And the drama’s delicate internal settings and impeccable storyline were highly praised by the audiences.Hua Xu YinHua Xu Yin is about a princess who sacrificed her life for the country but later was saved and began her own adventures with another name. It is also a TV series adaptation of an online novel of the same title written by Tang Qi. The series premiered in July 2015, staring Lin Yuan and Zheng Jiaying. Hua Xu YinC. Nirvana in FireD. The lost Tomb22. The key to Nirvana in Fire’s success lies in the elements(要素)except __________.A. fictional characters and dynastyB. historical accuracyC. delicate internal settingsD. perfect storyline23. What do these TV shows have in common?A. The stories of these TV shows take place in ancient world.B. The themes of these TV shows focus on love.C. The scripts of these TV shows are on the basis of online literature.D. The endings of these TV shows are tragedies.BI vividly remember walking back to my house after collecting the afternoon mails. I saw a credit card statement, another credit card statement and our bank statements. I was in that momentthat I felt nervous.I realized that even though I had married a man who I absolutely loved and adored, I really didn’t have a clear sense of how he handled money and how the two of us were going to combine our different approaches to handling money in our marriage. I was more organized and detailed, but he was more of a laid-back type. I knew that getting on the same financial page was a key factor in creating a successful marriage and financial future.I asked my husband if he would be willing to set up a time each week to talk about our finances and develop a plan for getting rid of our credit card debt. My husband said he would be willing to do this. Admittedly, he was skeptical — but willing. We came to refer to our weekly meetings as our Financial Dates. We didn’t rea lly have a clue as to what we were doing. All we knew was that we needed to give our finances serious attention. Some Dates were filled with tense conversations. Other Dates were filled with laughter, joy and creativity. However, we kept showing up for our Dates and we never gave up. What started out as a means for survival became a powerful connecting thread in our relationship. Something shifted within us.Instead of our finances becoming a source of divisive tension that pulled us apart, they became the glue that held us together as we became a unified team.I still recall the day that we excitedly crossed off our last credit card payment on the chart we had created. We had finally arrived. We were free. We had been given wings to fly. Now, whenever I fee l huge stress I ask myself, “How am I contributing to what is happening right now?” This gives me the ultimate power to take action. Even though my husband and I don’t have any guarantee against future challenges, I am left with something deep within that is unshakable and that can never be taken away — the memory of our past successes and the power to integrate (整合) these lessons in my day-to-day life.24. Why did the author feel nervous when collecting the afternoon mails?A. She was not sure about her marriage.B. She didn’t know how to handle money.C. She could feel the pressure of the huge debt.D. She was reminded of the quarrels in the family.25. Which word can replace the underlined word “laid-back” in the second paragraph?A. relaxedB. skepticalC. lazyD. confident26. What can we learn from the Financial Dates?A. They showed the couple clear direction at first.B. They left the couple nothing but deep sadness.C. They were once interrupted but quickly continued.D. They strengthened the couple’s relationship at last.27. We can infer that when faced with stress the author will _______.A. try to change the situationB. focus on what contributes to itC. get power from the memoryD. feel free to do what she likesCConventional wisdom is a major barrier to innovation(创新) that threatens the survival of companies everywhere. It’s based on the assumption(假设) that old ideas will always work, so they shouldn’t be challenged. While this may be a valid(有效的)assumption in situations that don’t change, it’s unlikely to hold true in a changing situation. In today’s rapid changing global environment, old methods often don't work, and stubbornly using them can lead to major problems. Most people seem to agree with conventional wisdom because it gives one a false sense of security. If everyone else believes it, then it must be true. Individuals who use conventional wisdom are certain that they are right, and being right is good. They want to continue using old ideas rather than take risks with changes that might not work. In 1977, Ken Olsen, co-founder and CEO of Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC), stated “There is no reason for any individual to have a computer in his home.” Despite being a n important leader in the computer industry, DEC no longer exists.People seem to forget that since innovation is a change, there can be no innovation without change. Unfortunately, conventional wisdom prevents leaders, followers and companies from changing and therefore innovating. If companies don’t innovate, but their competitors do, the future is likely to be problematic. Breaking from conventional wisdom has led to many of the most innovative companies and products in history across many industries, so it has a powerful effect on business success.Ted Turner (founder of CNN) knew little, if anything, about the news business, but he knew it was inconvenient to watch news only at the dinner hour, as was common before CNN. Turner’s solution was to create a cable channel dedicated to news 24 hours a day. The news establishment reflected conventional wisdom at the time, and predicted his idea would fail because no one wanted to watch the news all day. However, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to understand that viewers don’t have to watch the news all day for the CNN to work. Viewers just have to watch when they want to get information. Due to conventional thinking, the critics failed to recognize the opportunity that was clear to Ted. They assumed that only what was familiar to them could work in the future.Conventional wisdom prevents creativity, flexibility and risk-taking, so unconventional leaders enthusiastically break from it. To survive, thrive and maintain competitive advantage, companies must be flexible when reacting to change.28. DEC has disappeared probably because ___________.A. the consumers didn’t lik e its productsB. the leaders lacked the sense of securityC. the CEO stuck to the conventional ideasD. the employees took many risks with changes29. The first consideration when purchasing plants is to make reasonably sure that they are suitable for the condition in which they are going to be housed.A general rule for most plants being brought indoors for the first time is to ensure that they have reasonable temperature of not less than 60 degrees Fahrenheit, a position out of cold air, safe from pets and not exposed to strong sunlight.Plants love company. When plants are growing together, they create an atmosphere of damp around themselves which is far more beneficial than hot dry conditions. A group of plants will also present a more pleasing picture and provide an opportunity for a creative arrangement. There is no secret to this. Just rely on your natural feeling for harmony.Watering and feeding plants are probably the two areas of care that are the least well understood, but, again, if you follow a few simple rules, your plants should do well. Cold water direct from the tap can have a frightening effect on the roots of delicate plants. Slightly warm water is therefore the answer. It is usually better to pour water on to the soil on the surface of the pot rather than put the water into the pot holder at the bottom. Avoid giving small amount of water at regular intervals(间隔)---- it is much better to wet the soil right through the pot in one go and then to allow it to dry noticeably before giving it a further watering. The majority of indoor plants will be in active growth from March until October, and during this time, the established ones will benefit from regular feeding. This may mean feeding with a weak liquid fertilizer(肥料) at each watering or at intervals of a week or ten days with fertilizer at a standard strength. It is important, however, to ensure that plants are not fed when growth is inactive, when the soil in the pot is dry, or too soon after the plants has been potted up.32.
