First thing that passed through my mind was that it must be a misunderstanding, such a look was not meant for me, but later I saw the old lady’s face changing every time she saw me, at least seven times, no more doubt that she was very angry with me.I was confused, shocked, and near anger, my brains were spinning, trying to figure out h ow’s and why’s but somehow managed to not show it on my face. Went home, slept a night over it and decided that I have to find a way to break the ice with this lady. The very next day I bought some nice chocolate praying to see her again and when I caught sight of her, went straight to her and apologized telling her “I am so very sorry if I angered you, I had no such intention, please accept my apologizes”, and handled her the chocolate. Surprised, she told me not to mind her, and apologized too. It was an awkward moment, but we made peace and the grimaces换成embarrassment is/ are replaced by smiles now.I am very grateful for this experience, it shows me I still have plenty of work to do with my mind, I learned how it is not easy to take knowledge of, accept and forgive acts that we may feel as unfair, and it taught me of possibilities about fixing a conflict. Best advice to keep for myself? Do not react, do not be quick to judge, sleep it over, and throw in a pinch of empathy for self as well as others.(304词)24. AA. Book TheaterB. BookmobileC. Computer TutorD. Reader Desk2. If you get the job of “Bookmobile”, you are expected to _________.A. work with young childrenB. check materials for guestsC. lift heavy boxesD. repair computers3. The purpose of the advertisement is to _________ .A. attract students to librariesB. offer job opportunitiesC. raise money for librariesD. introduce new booksBIt's 3 o'clock and you've been hard at work. As you sit at your desk, a strong desire for chocolate overcomes you. You try to busy yourself to make it go away. But it doesn't. Here is another situation. Perhaps you are not feeling well. The only thing you want to eat is a big bowl of chicken soup, like your mom used to make when you were sick as a child. Food cravings are a strong desire for a specific type of food. And they are normal.Scientists at the website How Stuff Works compare hunger and cravings this way. Hunger is a fairly simple connection betwe en the stomach and the brain. They even call it simply “stomach hunger.” When our stomachs burn up all of the food we have eaten, a hormone (荷尔蒙) sends a message to one part of the brain for more food, which regulates our most basic body functions such as thirst, hunger and sleep. The brain then produces a chemical to start the appetite and you eat. Hunger is a function of survival.A craving is more complex. It activates (使活跃) brain areas related to emotion, memory and reward. These are the same areas of the brain activated during drug-craving studies. Because of this, some scientists call food cravings “mind hunger.” People often crave foods that are high in fat and sugar. Foods that are high in fat or high in sugar produce chemicals in the brain. These chemicals give us feelings of pleasure. In a 2007 study, researchers at Cambridge University found that “dieting or restricted eating generally increases the possibility of food craving.” So, the more you deny yourself a food that you want, the more you may crave it. However, fasting is a bit different. They found that eating no food at all for a short period of time lessened food cravings. So, the next time you crave something very special, know that your brain may be more to blame than your stomach.4. EconomyCIt is widely acknowledged that it is by no means an easy task to bring up a child well. And our ancestors already understood it well. As an old proverb says, “It takes an entire village to raise a child.” That is being quoted more and more often these days. And I’m pleased about that. Parents need to be involved in their children’s education in many ways. Helping children with homework and studying, going on a field trip, teaching a craft or coaching a child’s sports team are all great ways to be involved with your child’s education. And don’t forget to communicate with teachers—they need and respect your input. Studies show that children learn more and schools function better when parents and schools work together.Communities can help children create and achieve new goals. There are other ways such as helping with homework. reading to a child, coaching a children’s team, providing emotional support, helping solve problems and building self-esteem(自尊). Kids need role models and advisers can be role models by sharing their experiences and wisdom.Businesses can also help shape our children’s future—invite a class from your local school to visit your workplace. You may be providing a glimpse that opens a new world of possibilities. Show students what goes on during a typical day. Give a mini course for students: how products are made; how machinery works. You may have a developing electrician, a teacher, a nurse, or even a newspaper reporter on your hands. It really does take an entire village to raise a child. So share the responsibility-and the joy—of bringing a child to his or her full potential.8. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 1 mean?A. Raising a child well needs various efforts.B. Researchers at UCLA want to see how sedentary behavior (sitting for long periods of time) influences the health of the brain, especially regions of the brain that are important to memory formation.UCLA researchers gathered 35 people aged 45 to 75 and asked about their physical activity levels and the average number of hours per day they spent sitting over the previous work. Each person had a high-resolution MRI (热分辨磁共振成像)scan, which provides a detailed look at the medial temporal lobe, or MTL, a brain region involved in the formation of new memories. The researchers found that sedentary behavior is an important predictor of thinning of the MTL and that physical activity, even at high levels, is not enough to compensate the harmful effects of sitting for long periods.“This study does not prove that too much sitting causes thinner brain structures, but instead that more hours spent sitting are associated with thinner regions,” resea rchers said. In addition, the researchers focused on the hours spent sitting, but did not ask participants if they took breaks during this time. The researchers next hope to follow a group of people for a longer duration to determine if sittingcauses the thinning and what role gender (性別), race, and weight might play in brain health related to sitting.“MTL thinning can be an indication of cognitive (认知的) decline in middle-aged and older adults. Reducing sedentary behavior may be a possible target for measures designed to improve brain health in people at risk for Alzheimer(阿尔茨海默) disease,” researchers said.12. What is the study done by UCLA mainly intended to find out?A. What harm sitting too much causes.B. Why sitting too much is like smoking.C. How too much sitting affects brain health.D. Whether too much sitting causes early death13. Participants were scanned by a high-resolution MRI to .A. evaluate their memory lossB. examine their MTL conditionsC. record their physical activity levelsD. record the length of time for their sitting14. What do UCLA researchers think of their study?A. It is a great success.B. It is of little practical value.C. It must target the young.D. It still needs to be improved.15. What can be the best title for the text?A. Long Sitting Is Bad for Your BrainB. How to Improve Brain HealthC. Sitting Causes Many Health ProblemsD. An Easy Way to Prevent Memory Loss第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。

Strong faith in his great ambition.27The author describes Nick's life in a tone of ______ .A. concernB. appreciationC. pityD. humor.CThere is an English saying that says, "Let Sleeping Dogs Lie." It means not bringing up an old problem. Researchers in Hungary have found another reason to let dogs keep on sleeping. It seems the animals are learning while they sleep. The Hungarian researchers placed tools on the dogsˈ heads to know about electrical activity in the brain. The brain activity, called sleep spindles (梭状波), takes place in human beings, and has been connected with learning. The researchers hope to understand how the dogsˈ ability to learn and remember changes as they get older. The study may help them understand how human brains change as we age.The researchers found differences between male and female dogs. Iotchey, a researcher, says the females appeared much better at learning new things. Female dogs have about twice as many spindles per minute as male dogs, they also happen to be the better learners, and they memorize the task much better. But it was harder for all the older dogs to remember things, especially when several things were happening at the same time.DóraSzabó also studies sleep spindles. Szabó is a neuroscientist in a university in Budapest. She says the older dogs have fewer spindles and are easily cheated. "If you first hide the reward into one bowl, then in another and in another, they get lost after a while. So their performance is going down, and they are getting poor in solving new problems."Researchers hope the study will not only help understanding of learning ability and memory changes in dogs, but also the aging of humans. Senior Researcher EnikóKubinyi adds that the aging dogs suffer from the same problems as humans who are aging. "Among very old dogs, up to two thirds of them show signs of dementia (痴呆), and this dementia is really very similar to that of humans, so we could use dogs as a natural model of human aging."28Why do researchers study dogsˈ sleep?A. To help the dogs sleep well.B. To study dogsˈ sleeping activity.C. To control dogsˈ learning ability.D. To know more about human brains.29What is the relationship between the number of sleep spindles and dogsˈ learning ability?A. They have nothing to do with each other.B. Dogs with less spindles have better learning ability.C. Dogs with more spindles have better learning ability.D. Dogsˈ learning ability is totally decided by spindle number.30What can we know about old dogs in Paragraph 4?A. They are easy to play jokes on.B. They can finish tasks one after another.C. They are good at solving new problems.D. Their memories are not so good as before.31Which is the best title for the text?A. What we can do to let dogs sleepB. What we can learn by watching sleeping dogsC. What the saying "Let Sleeping Dogs Lie" meansD. What is the difference between humans and dogsDWhy are so many people so afraid of failure?Quite simply because no one tells us how to fail so that failure becomes an experience that will lead to growth. We forget that failure is part of the human condition and that every person has the right to fail. Most parents work hard at either preventing failure or protecting their children from the knowledge that they have failed. One way is to lower standards.A mother describes her child's hand-made table as"Perfect!even though it doesn't stand still.Another way is to shift(转移)blame. If John fails science, his teacher is unfair or stupid. The trouble with failure-prevention devices is that they leave a child unequipped for life in the real world. The young need to learn that no one can be best at everything,no one can win all the time-and that it's possible to enjoy a game even when they don't win.A child who's not invited to a birthday party, who doesn't make the honor roll on the baseball team, feels terrible,of course. But parents should not offer a quick consolation(安慰),prize or say,"It doesn'tmatter.because it does. The young should be allowed to experience disappointment-and be helped to master it.Failure is never pleasurable. It hurts grown-ups and children alike. But it can make a positive(有益的)contribution to your life once you learn to use it.Step one is to ask"Why did I fail?" Don't blame someone else.Ask yourself what you did wrong, how you can improve. If someone else can help, don't be shy about inquiring(咨询).Success, which encourages repetition of old behavior,is not nearly as good a teacher as failure. You can learn from a bad party how to give a good one, from an ill-chosen first house what to look for in a second.Even a failure that seems definitive can prompt fresh thinking,a change of direction. After 12years of studying ballet a friend of mine auditioned(面试)for a professional company. She was turned down."Would further training help?she asked. The ballet master shook his head."You will never be a dancer,he said,"you haven't the body for it."In such cases, the way to use failure is to take stock(鉴定)bravely asking."What have I left? What else can I do?"My friend put away her shoes and moved into dance treatment center,a field where she's both able and useful.Failure frees one to take risks because there's less to lose.Often there is recovery(恢复)of energy─a way to find new possibilities.32The second paragraph tells us ______ .A. how a mother praised her childrenB. two ways of failure prevention most parents used when their children failC. how to shift(转移)blameD. parents should blame their children at the proper time33According to the author, what should a child know in the real world?______A. He should be equipped for life.B. No one can be best all the time at everything.C. No parents should offer quick consolations.D. He can get pleasure from failure as well as success.34The underlined word "prompt" in the fifth paragraph can be best replaced by______.A. improve B. prevent C. continue D. cause35From the passage we know that ______ can affect one's life greatly once he learns to use it.A. successB. disappointmentC. failureD. value第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

They encouraged and praised my efforts. After delivering this presentation successfully, I became more confident. I said to myself, ―If I can speak in front of such a learned audience, like t he principal who educates others, I can now speak in front of others too.‖I started delivering lectures on various topics like Self-Motivation, Personality Development, Personal Excellence, Spoken English and Presentation Skills.
