The novel describing several different marriages among young women of the middle class, which reveals that love is the foundation for a happy marriage, and also should be based on a large amount of money. Pride and Prejudice also reflected Jane Austen’s marriage view: It is wrong to marry for the property, money and position. She emphasizes the importance of the ideal marriage, and regards men and women's emotion as the foundation stone which concludes the ideal marriage.The story of Pride and Prejudice took place in the time of the Regency in Britain. At that time, Britain was at the period of transition from the earlier stage of Capitalism to Capitalist Industrialization. In the countryside, the aristocratic family still held great power and right that country squires were likely to fawn upon them. However, as the development of Capitalism and the expand of the rank of rich people, the distinction between social strata was becoming smaller and smaller, while money was getting more and more important in people’s mind about social value.The author, Jane Austen, was a British novelist who was born in a small country town. Austen didn't go to regular schools, but she read many literary works at her parents' guidance. She started writing about the age of 20, and published six novels. Jane was unmarried all her life. Cause Darcy’s pride was a suggest of status gap between he and Eli, he wouldn’t have the same thought with Eli and consequently the ideal marriage. Influenced by his friend Darcy and family, he left Jane. But fortunately, this couple got married at last. In my opinion, their marriage was just based on the attraction between each other. Actually, they were lack of confidence and understanding with each other. Although this marriage appeared a happiness one, some crisis was hidden.The style of her works is humorous and rich in comic conflicts, so many readers love them. From the late eighteenth to the nineteenth century, vulgar and boring sentimental novels and gothic novels were full in British literary. Bu t Jane’s novel iconoclastic showed mid-class of daily life and pastoral scenery in British countryside at that time which had not been capitalist industrial revolution impacted,. Although the breadth and depth of the reflection was limited, it played good effect to change the vulgar atmosphere in novels.Pride and prejudice are our common weakness and shortcomings. Every person actually is easy to be driven by his own subjective impression. So it can comment easily to other people under incorrectness, then it will cause misunderstandings between each other. When she learned that it was Darcy who played a major role in marrying her eloped little sister, Lydia, to Wickham, there was no doubt that she loved him. They two finally went together.Among those characters in this novel, I hate Mrs. Bennet for she was such a snobbish and foolish woman. Her poor nurse urged her to do something disgusting and foolish. Those seemed to help her loved daughters but in fact, all out of her own vanity.I like Elizabeth most. She was the second daughter in the Bennet family, and the most intelligent and quick-witted, Elizabeth is theprotagonist of Pride and Prejudice and one of the most well-known female characters in English literature. Her admirable qualities are numerous—she is lovely, clever, and, in a novel defined by dialogue, she converses as brilliantly as anyone. Her honesty, virtue, and lively wit enable her to rise above the nonsense and bad behavior that pervade her class-bound and often spiteful society. Nevertheless, her sharp tongue and tendency to make hasty judgments often lead her astray; Pride and Prejudice is essentially the story of how she (and her true love, Darcy) overcome all obstacles—including their own personal failings—to find romantic happiness. Elizabeth must not only cope with a hopeless mother, a distant father, two badly behaved younger siblings, and several snobbish, antagonizing females, she must also overcome her own mistaken impressions of Darcy, which initially led her to reject his proposals of marriage. Her charms were sufficient to keep him interested, fortunately, while she navigates familial and social turmoil. As she gradually came to recognize the nobility of Darcy’s c haracter, she realize d the error of her initial prejudice against him. She knew her own mind and dare to say no. While sometimes she behaved in an extreme way because of her over self-esteem. Owing to her sensitive mother, she had to protect herself from insulting.Actually, besides Elizabeth, I took a lot interest in Mr. Darcy since the very beginning though he appeared as a proud, self-important man. Instead, such good-looking gentleman like Mr. Bingley did not attract me very much. In some cases, a man with perfect character would always have a velvet paw. Wickham is a typical example that so many people had been deceived by his appearance. As I like both the two roles, I am happy to see them finally get married.Darcy’s proud is evident. His talks, his expressions, every movement of him seemed to show his pride. But as I turning over the novel, I found a rather proud heart in Elizabeth as well. For a country girl, there would not be a lot to be proud of. However, living in a family of silly sisters and a gossipy mother whose mind was always full of marriage, the smart girl could not express herself. Each word she said seemed to protect herself from others, especially to those who were also proud such as Darcy. It was not always good for her; however, for a person like Darcy who had accepted so many compliments, it was really an attraction. If Elizabeth had not been too proud to show her disdain, she would never have had his eyes on her. And if Darcy had not been as generous and kind as he was written to be virtually, he would have hated Elizabeth instead of being attracted so deeply. However, it was her pride which blinded her from learning the truth. She misunderstood Darcy and seemed to dislike all the things which were involved with him. That might simply be the meaning of the word “Prejudice”. Elizabeth was intelligent, analyzing the character of Mr. Wickham and Darcy; she soon sensibly realized her mistake and made every attempt she could to save it. Also, it’s Moral belief and Behavior that shows the difference between Elizabeth and her mother and younger sisters. Elizabeth is practical and honest. Her mother and younger sisters, on the contrary, are frivolous and narrow-minded. At the same time, it shocks me that according to so ciety’s belief at that time, all females should be elegant, dependent, and too shy to reveal themselves. All the females should obey the social belief unconditionally and firmly, especially the females in lower social status. 在真正了解达西之前，她从来不隐瞒对达西的讨厌;喜欢威克姆，就从言行举止方面表现出来。
对于她面对凯瑟琳夫人的态度，也表示欣赏。
其次，我也喜欢达西先生的性格。
虽说他看起来傲慢，高高在上，可是他的内心却是善良的，不喜欢过多的去解释什么。
对待自己爱的人，他也敢于表达爱，虽然方式让人难以接受，但至少他做的是那个真实的自己。
我还欣赏他的改变。
在伊丽莎白拒绝他的告白后，他为了爱情改变了自己原有的傲慢。
所以故事的结局，很合我心意。
婚姻的奠基本来就应该是爱情，如同伊丽莎白所追求的一样。
面包与玫瑰的选择，若二者不可得兼，取玫瑰而舍面包也。
这种选择或许是因为我还没有面临生活的压力，但是追求爱，追求美的确是发自内心的呼吁。

I like this book very much.I always think why the title is Pride and Prejudice. I have been confused for a long time, but now I understand. Pride and Prejudice are the things that help determine the actions of the two main characters and the development of the plot. In this sense, the story is about pride and prejudice, about the effects of these vices on people and events. Pride refers to Darcy’s behavior, and prejudice links with Elizabeth’s view on Darcy. Pride pr oduces prejudice.“It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.” Everybody knows the first sentence of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. The famous opening sentence, which is humorous and famous, represents the perfect marriage between the content and style. I can find the same echo from this opening sentence in many parts of the novel. In the whole book, various combinations, comparison and contrasts of different characters and situations are presented by the author.Some people hold the view that the author failed to narrate several of the characters, such as Lydia and Mr. Wickham. It is no doubt true that the novel would be richer if we know Lydia’s and Mr. Wickham’s experience. And so on. As to my own conclusion, I do not agreewith this point of view. I think there should be main characters and other characters in a novel. If the author writes too much about other characters, then main characters will fade. At the same time, leaving some room for readers to imagine is also of great importance.In this novel, Mrs. Bennet is a representative of the generality of people who consider the gaining of a son-in-low in terms of the acquisition of property. It is this attitude that makes her not only comic but also shocking and at times disgusting. As to my opinion, marriage should mainly base on sentiment rather than economic conditions. True love is much important than money.Elizabeth Bennet is the protagonist of the novel and Mr. Darcy is the male protagonist of the novel. Pride and PrejudiceAdapted from Jane Austin’s novel, the movie Pride and Prejudice has impressed me a lot .The plot brings me back to the late 1980s conservative England society where the story is set.Though born in a small landowner family, Elizabeth has a strong sense of self-respect. Once rejected by Darcy for the dancing, she considers him as an arrogant man and determines to leave him aside. But she never knows that Darcy has fallen in love with her at the first sight and this rude behavior is probably due to shyness. In addition, Darcy persuades Bingley to leave Elizabeth’s sister Jane. Thus, when Darcy shows his affection for her, she rejected him firmly. After many things, Elizabeth eventually realizes that Darcy gradually turns to be a very helpful and kind-hearted man and accepts his affection. It is obvious that they both dare love in spite of the wide gap between family status.By contrast, Elizabeth’s good friend Charlotte shows different attitudes towards marriage. Complying with the soc iety’s cognition level, she marries Collins. What must be noticed is that she marries for a comfortable life, not for love, and has to endure her husband’s strange behaviors. And from then on, she has to live a lamentable life.Elizabeth’s rejection to Collins’s proposal suggests that she is different from most girls then. The next oldest, Elizabeth, however, takes an instant dislike to Bingley‘s friend, Fitzwilliam Darcy, who appears to be proud, supercilious man. While Jane‘s affair progresses, Elizabeth is courted by a Mr. Collins, an unlikeable churchman who is a cousin of Mr. Bennet‘s and the legal heir of the small Bennet estate. When Elizabeth refuses his proposal, Collins turns to her best friend, Charlotte Lucas, who surprises everyone by accepting; she has found a comfortable, secure life at the cost of marrying an obsequious fool.Jane‘s chances of winning Bingley are diminished when he leaves for London. His sister Caoline and Darcy contrive to him there in order to prevent any further progressof this affairs with Jane, who is not in Bingley‘s social class. Elizabeth finds another reason for disliking Darcy when she hears from a fop named Wickham, who has flattered her shamefully, that Darcy had ruined his prospects years before.On a visit to Co llins‘ parsonage, Elizabeth meets Darcy again, and is a stonished when he proposes. She refuses and berates him for his treatment of Jane and Wickham. He explains in a letter that he had not realized the depth of Jane‘s affection for Bingley, hence had not seen the separation as a calamity. As for Wickham, that young man is real ly a scoundrel who had attempted to seduce Darcy‘s sister and to get her money. Elizabeth begins to suspect that she had misjudged Darcy; her doubt is reinforced when she meets him again at his estate and finds him to be a gracious host who is virtually worshipped by his employees.Their reconciliation is jeopardized, however, by the sudden elopement of Wickham and Lydia, the youngest Bennet girl. The Bennets are in a position where they must pay Wickham to marry their daughter. Surprisingly, however, the sum Wickham demands is relatively small. It is soon revealed that Mr. Darcy has paid an additional amount to the scoundrel.Elizabeth realizes from this that Darcy is in love with her. Shortly, Bingley arrives at the village again to renew his acquaintance with Jane. Darcy and Elizabeth apologize to each other for their initial pride and prejudice. And, in spite of protests from their families, Bingley and Darcy marry Jane and Elizabeth and take them off to comfortable futures.3.2 Analysis of main charactersElizabeth Bennet: Elizabeth Bennet is the second of the five daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Bennet. Elizabeth is the most logical and level-headed of the Bennet daughters, and that makes her her father's favorite. Although Elizabeth is thoughtful, intelligent, and practical, she comes to realize that she is just as capable of letting her own feelings get in the way of her good sense as her feather-brained sisters. Elizabeth realizes her grave mistake when she understands that she has greatly misjudged both Mr. Darcy and Mr. Wickham. Indeed her main problem may be her ―vanity‖ or ―pride‖ rather than her ―prejudice‖. Out of that vanity is destroyed that the prejudiceevaporates. In the process, she wins the affections of every reader.Jane Austen said if Elizabet h, the second daughter, that ―I think her as a creature as delightful a creature as ever appered in print, and how I shall be able to tolerate those who do not like her at least I do not know.‖(Letter to Cassandra, Jan. 1813)Jane Bennet: Jane is the eldest daughter, hence Miss Bennet. she is the most attractive of the Bennet daughters, and very desirable to impressionable bachelors like Bingley. Some critics have estimated Jane as equal in importance to Elizabeth, but she is better seen as foil to Elizabet h. She is ―perfect‖ in only a superficial way; that is, she surpasses Elizabeth in outward appearance, but she has none of the wisdom or strength of character that Elizabeth has. Jane Austen does not bother to develop Jane Bennet‘s character fully: she is virtually absent through the middle portion of the book, and she is portrayed constantly as a character who reacts, rather than acts.Charles Bingley: Bingley is a rather wooden, flat character. Good –looking, mannerly, friendly, easy in society, he has little depth. He recognizes that he has little strength of character. His love affairs with Jane progresses fairly smoothly, with no realization on his part of the turmoil he is causing. He agrees with Darcy that he has been easily led, and is given to changing his interests from moment to moment. He can love Jane, abandon her, rediscover her as easily as he abandons or rediscover the joys of fox-hunting, or of going to the theater. With Jane he will have a simple, uncomplicated, and bland marriage.Fitzwilliam Darcy:Mr. Darcy is Bingley's best friend as well as a very wealthy, handsome, and proud bachelor. Darcy is viewed as rude and conceited by all the inhabitants of Meryton as well as Elizabeth Bennet. As the book proceeds, we come to discover the truth about Darcy. We see that he is superior to Bingley as a suitor for the heroine. He is more complex, sensitive, and intelligent than the other males in the story. He shares with Elizabeth certain mature qualities: he is as contemptuous as she of family concerns, social ceremonies, and individualism appeal to him because of the same qualities in him. He and she agree that they do not perform well for others. Mrs. Bennet:Mrs. Bennet is Elizabeth Bennet's pushy, ignorant, and embarrassing mother whose greatest aspiration is to have her five daughters married off. Mrs.Bennet does not approve of Elizabeth's logic and practicality, and Elizabeth is her least favorite daughter.Part Ⅳ Study on the Marriages in the novel4.1 Obstacles to marriageIn pride and prejudice the plot of marriage is extended by the fact that there are two young ladies in a small village being courted by two bachelors. But there are obstacles in their marriage. And the obstacles to the marriage of these two couples are both external and internal.External obstacles:first, there is the economic status of Bennet family; the two bachelors must be willing to accept the disadvantages of marrying into a lower class. The elopement of Lydia and Wickham is a manifestation of the vulgarity out of which Elizabeth and Jane have come, and Jane have come, and they rightly fears the danger of being abandoned by their suitors. A melodramatic obstacles is provided by the stratagems of Darcy and Caroline, who for a while do their best to keep Bingley from Jane. Caroline also does her b est to hail Darcy‘s growing interest in Elizabeth.Internal obstacles: the internal obstacles are in each of the major characters. Darcy is too haughty and outwardly repellent, and deceives others by his appearance; he is proud and officious in hindering t he progress of Bingley‘s affa irs with Jane. Elizabeth is too quick to judge others and immediately develops a prejudice against Darcy. Bingley and Jane are both too malleable, and hence have their love affairs manipulated by others.All of these obstacles are overcome-especially Darcy‘s pride and Elizabeth‘s prejudice-the way is made clear of their marriages. The novel pleases us because of our sense of obstacles being met and overcome, and the triumph we share with peoplewe like. Once again the Cinderella myth is completed and we are satisfied.4.2 Different kinds of marriage in the novelJane Austen‘s main subject in this novel is courtship and marriage. There are seven marriages in pride and prejudice, all of them undoubtedly intended to reveal first of all the requirements of ―good‖ and ―bad‖ marriage.A “bad” marriage: a marriage based on economics—Charlotte’s marriage Charlotte is Elizabeth's best friend, but they have different choices on marriage."Although Charlotte is a well-educated girl but she doesn't have much property. She isn't as beautiful as other girls. She realizes that marriage isn't equal with happiness, but it is inherently like a safe to a woman. And Charlotte is different from Elizabeth. She has no wealth. She is unremarkable, but she is smart. She thinks it is a chance about whether marriage life will be happiness or not. As an already 27 years old woman, her choice of marriage is entirely out of realistic consideration. When she first met Collins, she saw his folly, and when he asked her to marry him, she also clearly know "Collins's certainly not a reasonable person, and do not let people like". Marriage for them is a task, but Collins couples obtain from the marriage what they want: Charlotte gets stable of rich life; Collins also gets a warm home. This is their understanding of marriage.Another “bad” marriage : the marriage based on superficial qualities—Lydia’s marriageBennett's daughter Lydia is a simple, frivolous and vanity girl, the young age and keen on social, and proud of it. Her feelings always kept fluctuating, wavering. Wickham is a handsome appearance, actual moral corruption, very luxury, and treachery. First he deceived rich Darcy miss, he failed. She never saw the ugly fact of life even she was deceived. Her character is vividly showed in many parts of the novel.According to the relationship between Bingley and Jane, love and similar interests are the basic factors of a successful and happy marriage. With many similarities in character, people can understand each other easily. Most important of all, the couple with similar interests can live together with a happy life, because there are understanding, helps and supporting between them. They don‘t care the defects of their partners and even they don‘t see any faults in each other.Elizabeth’s marriage is the most admirable marria geMr. Qian Zhongshu talked about marriage and compared marriage to a castle. But I think this marriage theory is not suitable for Darcy and Elizabeth. It uses vivid expression makes this great novel not only attracted thousands of readers in Austen‘s time, but also gave a special feeling to today‘s people. So we should talk about them.Love: In Pride and Prejudice, love is not a necessary component of marriage. In fact, most of the marriages we see are not based on love, but instead either on lust that quickly fades or on economic necessity. In this novel, romantic love is a privilege thatmost people have to do without and something that most people do not expect to find. At the same time, because love is a union between empathetic minds, it is shown to be a completely special emotion that is available only for intelligent, mature adults – it's the crowning achievement in the building of character.Marriage: Pride and Prejudice questions the extremely high value that Austen's society placed on marriage as the only possible economic security for women who are not independently wealthy. By showing us the miserable marriage of the Bennets, and by grossing us out with the mercenary marriages of Charlotte and Lydia, the novel questions a system which places so much importance on this institution that it seems to endanger individual morality and happiness. On the other hand, with the marriages of Jane and Elizabeth front and center, the novel does allow room for good partnership as well.Class: The most thoughts of the characters in Pride and Prejudice based on class. Darcy's character arc is to become the ultimate gentleman –he starts out wealthy, aristocratic, and good-hearted, and learns to add good manners and sociability to the mix. Conversely, although Wickham seems to have the outer polish of an aristocrat, he is proven to be thoroughly ungentlemanly. It is the same with the female characters, whose behavior and decorum immediately marks them as either upper or lower class. Although both Jane and Elizabeth cross class lines to get married, the general idea is that they are almost aristocratic already.Pride: The two major themes of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice are summed up in the title. Pride is the character flaw that causes Elizabeth Bennet to dislike Fitzwilliam Darcy upon their first meeting. She perceives in him a cold aloofness that she attributes to Darcy‘s inflated opinion of him self. Yet Elizabeth herself also suffers from the same flaw; her pride in her own ability to analyze character is such that she refuses to reevaluate Darcy in the face of evidence in his favor.There are other themes besides above, such as reputation, family, deceit and so on. As times goes by, the discussion about the theme of Pride and Prejudice become more and more diversified. But the problem of the relationship between love, marriage and economical conditions will never stop.PartⅤConclusionMany people simply regard Pride and Prejudice as a love story, but in my opinion, this book is an illustration of the society at that time. She perfectly reflected the relation between money and marriage at her time and gave the people in her works vivid characters. The characters have their own personalities. When I read the book, I can always find the same personalities in the society now. So I think this book is indeed the representative of the society in Britain in the 18th century. Although Austen was only 21 when she wrote Pride and Prejudice, her sharp observation of social lives makes the style of this book surprisingly mature and lively.
