第3篇 Chronic(慢性的) diseases(疾病): the world’s leading (最主要的)killer Chronic diseases are the leading cause of death in the world. Yet health experts say these conditions are often the most preventable. Chronic diseases include heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes and lung disorders. The World HEALTH organization says chronic diseases lead to about seventeen million early deaths each year. The United Nations agency expects more than three hundred eighty million people to die of chronic diseases by two thousand fifteen. It says about eighty percent of the deaths will happen in developing countries. The WHO says chronic diseases now cause two-thirds of all deaths in the Asia- Pacific area. In ten years it could be almost three-fourths. People are getting sick in their most economically productive years. In fact, experts say chronic diseases are killing more middle-aged people in poorer countries than in wealthier ones. The WHO estimates that chronic diseases will cost China alone more than five hundred million dollars in the next ten years. That estimate represents the costs of medical treatment and lost productivity. Russia and India are also expected to face huge economic losses. Kim Hak-Su is the head of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific. Last week in Bangkok he presented a W.H.O. report on the problem. It says deaths from chronic diseases have increased largely as the result of economic gains in man countries. The report details the latest findings from nine countries. They include Brazil, Britain, Canada, China, India, and Nigeria. The others are Pakistan, Russia and Tanzania. Mister Kim said infectious and parasitic diseases have until recently been the main killers in Asia and the Pacific. But he says they are no longer the major cause of death in most countries. Health officials say as many as eighty percent of deaths from chronic diseases could be prevented. They say an important tool for governments is to restrict the marketing alcohol and tobacco to young people. Also, more programs are needed to urge healthy eating and more physical activity. U.N. officials aim through international action to reduce chronic-disease deaths by two percent each year through two thousand fifteen. They say meeting that target could save thirty-six million lives. That includes twenty-five million in Asia and the Pacific. 1. How many people in developing countries are expected to die of chronic diseases by 2015? A. more than 17 million B. more than 380 million C. more than 304 million D. more than 25 million 2. Due to chronic diseases China will face A. great pressure from other countries B. a limited economic market C. a shortage of the labor force D. huge economic losses 3. Which can NOT be learned from the passage? A. many chronic-disease deaths are preventable B. chronic diseases are the major cause of death in most countries C. chronic diseases are killing more middle-aged people than elderly people D.economic gains in many countries have contributed to chronic-disease deaths 4. Until recently the main killers in Asia and the Pacific have been A. economic gains B. lost productivity C. chronic diseases D. infectious and parasitic diseases 5. Which is Not mentioned as a way to prevent chronic-disease deaths? A. timely medical treatment B. healthy eating C. more physical activity D. reduction in drinking and smoking 标准答案: C,D,C,D,A。

The first comprehensive study on the nation's oral health, released recently by the Office of the U.S. Surgeon General, calls dental and oral diseases a “silent epidemic (流行病),”even in children. The report states that more than 51 million school hours are lost each year to dental-related illness. In fact,a recent study pointed to dental care as the most common unmet health need among American children. To help counter this, the American Academy of Periodontology (牙周病学)(AAP)is launching an effort to educate children and parents about the prevention of dental diseases in children.“This is important because oral problems can impact self-esteem for children and lead to problems of eating, speaking and attending to learning,”said Michael McGuire, president of the AAP.Common dental problems seen in children are cavities (龋洞)and gingivitis (龈牙),which are found in the majority of U.S. children. “When these problems are not caught early and treated, they can develop into more severe problems and cause unnecessary suffering,”said McGuire “However, much of the time, oral problems are avoidable problems.”In the Rio Grande V alley in Texas,a group of more than 120 dentists volunteers to deliver dental care to thousands of low-income children each year with its Mobile Dental Unit that travels from school to school.“According to the Surgeon General's Report, about 37 percent of children have not had a dental visit before starting school,”said McGuire. “When children don't see dentists they missthe opportunity to have problems caught early before they develop into larger, more expensive problems to treat, and parents miss the opportunity to learn how to promote good oral habits in their children.”16Only in February should attention be paid to children's oral healthA RightB WrongC Not mentioned17Dental and oral diseases are common in both adults and childrenA RightB WrongC Not mentioned18Boys miss more school hours each year due to dental-related illnessA RightB WrongC Not mentioned19Oral problems in children can develop into more severe problems.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned20Oral problems can not be avoided in any wayA RightB WrongC Not mentioned21The low-income children are very grateful to the dentists.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned22Some children have never seen a dentist before starting school.

Text1Habits are a funny thing. We reach for them mindlessly, setting our brains on auto-pilot and relaxing into the unconscious comfort of familiar routine. “Not choice, but habit rules the unreflecting herd,” William Wordsworth said in the 19th century. In the ever-changing 21st century, even the word “habit” carries a negative connotation. So it seems antithetical to talk about habits in the same context as creativity and innovation.

But brain researchers have discovered that when we consciously develop new habits, we create parallel synaptic paths, and even entirely new brain cells, that can jump our trains of thought onto new, innovative tracks. But don’t bother trying to kill off old habits; once those ruts of procedure are worn into the hippocampus, they’re there to stay. Instead, the new habits we deliberately ingrain into ourselves create parallel pathways that can bypass those old roads.

Not only do babies get to doze their days away, but they' ve also mastered the fine art of learning in their sleep.By the time babies are a year old, they can recognize a lot of sounds and even simple words. Marie Cheour at the University of Turku in Finland suspected that they might progress this fast because they learn language while they sleep as well as when they are awake. To test the theory, Cheour and their colleagues studied 45 newborn babies in the first days of their lives. They exposed all the infants to an hour of Finnish vowel sounds one that sounds like "oo", another like "ee" and the third boundary vowel peculiar to Finnish and similar languages that sounds like something in between. EEG(脑电图)recording of the infants brains before and after the session showed that the newborns could not distin-guish the sounds.Fifteen of the babies then went back with their mothers, where the rest were split in-to two sleep-study groups. One group was exposedthroughout their night-time sleeping hours to the same three vowels, while the others listened to the other, easier-to-distin-guish vowel sounds. When tested in the morning, and again in the evening, the babies who' d heard the tricky boundary vowels all night showed brainwave activity indicating that they could now recognize this sound. They could identify the sound even when its pitch was changed, while none of the other babies could pick up the boundary vowel at all.Cheour doesn't know how babies accomplish this nighttime learning, but she suspects that the special ability might indicate that unlike adults, babies don't "turn off" their cere-bral cortex (大脑皮层) while they sleep. The skill probably fades in the course of the first years of life, she adds - so forget the idea that you can pick up the tricky French vowels, as an adult just by slipping a language tape under your pillow. But while it may not help grown-ups, Cheour is hoping to use the sleeping hours to give remedial help to babies who are genetically at risk nguage disorders.{TS}Babies can learn language even in their sleep.A. The first comprehensive study on the nation's oral health, released recently by the Office of the U.S. Surgeon General, calls dental and oral diseases a "silent epidemic (流行病)," even in children. The report states that more than 51 million school hours are lost each year to dental-related illness. In fact, a recent study pointed to dental care as the most common unmet health need among American children. To help counter this, the American Academy of Periodontology (牙周病学)(AAP) is launching an effort to educate children and parents about the prevention of dental diseases in children."This is important because oral problems can impact self-esteem for children and lead to problems of eating, speaking and attending to learning," said Michael McGuire, president of the AAP.Common dental problems seen in children are cavities (龋洞) and gingivitis (龈牙),which are found in the majority of U.S. children. "When these problems are not caught early and treated, they can develop into more severe problems and cause unnecessary suffering," said McGuire "However, much of the time, oral problems are avoidable problems."In the Rio Grande Valley in Texas, a group of more than 120 dentists volunteers to deliverdental care to thousands of low-income children each year with its Mobile Dental Unit that travels from school to school."According to the Surgeon General's Report, about 37 percent of children have not had a dental visit before starting school," said McGuire. "When children don't see dentists they miss the opportunity to have problems caught early before they develop into larger, more expensive problems to treat, and parents miss the opportunity to learn how to promote good oral habits in their children."16 Only in February should attention be paid to children's oral healthA RightB WrongC Not mentioned17 Dental and oral diseases are common in both adults and childrenA RightB WrongC Not mentioned18 Boys miss more school hours each year due to dental-related illnessA RightB WrongC Not mentioned19 Oral problems in children can develop into more severe problems.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned20 Oral problems can not be avoided in any wayA RightB WrongC Not mentioned21 The low-income children are very grateful to the dentists.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned22 Some children have never seen a dentist before starting school.

Bringing Nanotechnology to Health Care for the Poor Nanotechnology uses matter at the level of molecules and atoms. Researchers are finding different uses for particles with a length of one nanometer, or one-billionth of a meter. These include things like beauty products1 and dirt-resistant clothing. But one area where many experts believe nanotechnology holds great promise is medicine.Last week, speakers at a program in Washington discussed using .nanotechnology to improve health care in developing countries. The program took place at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. Peter Singer at the University of Toronto says a nanotechnology called quantum dots2 could be used to confirm eases of malaria. He says it could offer a better way than the traditional process of looking at a person's blood under a microscope. In poor countries, this process is often not followed. As a result, sick people may get treated for malaria even if they do not have it. Such misuse of medicines can lead to drug resistance. Quantum dots are particles that give off3 light when activated. Researchers are studying ways to program them to identify diseases by lighting up in the presence of a targeted molecule. 4 Experts say nanotechnology shows promise not just for diagnosing diseases, but also for treating them. Piotr Grodzinski of the National Institutes of Health5talked about how nanotechnology could make drugs more effective. He talked about cancer drugs already developed with nanotechnology. He says if a drug can target a cancer locally in the body, then much less of it might be needed, and that means lower side effects. 6Andrew Maynard is chief scientist for the Project on Emerging Nanotechnologies at theWoodrow Wilson Center. He noted that Brazil, India, China and South Africa are currently doing nanotechnology research that could help poor countries. But he also noted that there is some risk in using nano-materials. He says nanometer-sized particles behave differently in the body and the environment compared to larger particles7. Experts say more investment in research is needed to better understand these risks.
