changed.By understanding the psychological (心理学的)processes behind our different experiences of time,we might be able to slow down timea little. One basic law of psychological time is that time seems to slow down when we're exposed (接触)to new environments and experiences. The law is caused by the relationship between our experience of time and the amount of information our minds process. The moreinformation our minds take in,the slower time seems to pass.It follows, then, that we have different experiences of time in different situations. In some situations, our life is full of new experiences. Our minds process a lot of information and time seems to slow down.In other situations,we have fewer new experiences and the world around us becomes more and more familiar(熟悉的).We become insensitive to our experience, which means we process less information, and time seems to speed up.How can we slow down time? Here are two suggestions.Firstly, since we know that familiarity makes time pass faster,we can expose ourselves to as many new experiences as possible. We can give ourselves new challenges, meet new people, and expose our minds to new information, hobbies and skills. This will increase the amount of information our minds process and expand (增加)our experience of time.Secondly, and perhaps most effectively,we can give our whole attention to an experience﹣to what we are seeing, feeling, tasting, smelling or hearing. This means living through our senses rather than through our thoughts. For example,on the way home, focus your attention outside of yourself, instead of thinking about the problems you have to deal with.Look at the sky,or at the buildings you pass, traveling among them. This open attitude to your experiences helps take in more information and also has a time﹣expanding effect. To a certain degree,we can understand and control our experience of time passing. It's possible for us to slow down time by expanding our experience of time.(1)According to the writer,we can expand our experience of time by.A.going to bed on timeB.traveling to new placesC.having dinner as usualD.printing the same materials(2)What can we learn from the passage?A.Being familiar with the world around helps us get more information.B.Understanding psychological time makes life pass more quickly.C.We can take in more information by living through our senses.D.We should build a stronger relationship between time and us.(3)Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?A.Slow Down TimeB.Only Time Will TellC.Race Against TimeD.Time Will Not Come Twice17.(8分)How Much Can We Afford to Forget? In 2018,Science magazine asked some young scientists what schools should teach students. Most said students should spend less time memorizing facts and have more space for creative activities. As the Internet grows more powerful, students can access (获得)knowledge easily. Why should they be required to carry so much of it around in their heads?Civilizations(文明)develop through forgetting life skills that were once necessary. In the Agricultural(农业的)Age,a farmer could afford to forget hunting skills. When societies industrialized, the knowledge of farming could be safe to forget.Nowadays, smart machines give us access to most human knowledge. It seems that we no longer need to remember most things.Does it matter?Researchers have recognized several problems that may happen. For one, human beings have biases(偏见),and smart machines are likely to increase our biases. Many people believe smart machines are necessarily correct and objective, but machines are trained through a repeated testing and scoring process. In the process, human beings still decide on the correct answers.Another problem relates to the ease of accessing information. When there were no computers, efforts were required to get knowledge from other people,or go to the library. We know what knowledge lies in other brains or books, and what lies in our heads. But today, the Internet gives us the information we need quickly. This can lead to the mistaken belief﹣the knowledge we found was part of what we knew all along. In a new civilization rich in machine intelligence,we have easy access to smart memory networks where information is stored. But dependency on a network suggests possibilities ofbeing harmed easily. The collapse of any of the networks of relations our well﹣being(健康)depends upon, such as food and energy, would produce terrible results.Without food we get hungry;without energy we feel cold. And it is through widespread loss of memory that civilizations are at risk of falling into a dark age.We forget old ways to free up time and space for new skills. As long as the older forms of knowledge are stored somewhere in our networks, and can be found when we need them, perhaps they're not really forgotten.Still,as time goes on,we gradually but unquestionably become strangers to future people.(1)Why are smart machines likely to increase our biases?A.Because they go off course in testing and scoring.B.Because we control the training process on them,C.Because we offer them too much information.D.Because they overuse the provided answers.(2)The ease of accessing information from the Internet•A.frees us from making efforts to learn new skillsB.prevents civilizations from being lost at a high speedC.misleads us into thinking we already knew the knowledgeD.separates the facts we have from those in the smart machines(3)The word "collapse" in Paragraph 5 probably means"".A.a sudden failureB.the basic ruleC.a disappointing startD.the gradual development(4)What is the writer's main purpose in writing this passage?A.To question about the standards of information storage.B.To discuss our problems of communication with machines.C.To stress the importance of improving our memorizing ability.D.To remind us of the risk of depending on machines to remember.四、阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题.(共10分,每小题10分)18.(10分)Huge Waves Destroying Arctic Ice Faster than ExpectedIce covers much of the Arctic Ocean(北冰洋).Some pieces of ice are huge, like moving islands. As temperatures have increased, however, some of the ice has begun to disappear.Scientists have discovered huge waves(海浪)in the arctic waters. The waves were discovered by accident in May,2010.Scientist Aleksey Marchenko and his students set out on a trip. They wanted to study the icy waters. On May 2,the ship traveled east and stopped next to a large chunk of ice.around 50 miles from the small island of Hopen.Marchenko prepared to lead his students out onto the Ice "We were ready to go but when I went out,I discovered many cracks(裂缝)around," he remembers. He decided to move the ship deeper into the ice to keep safe. The farther in they went,he thought, the harder the ice would become. As they pushed forward, however, the ship experienced small waves, and then bigger ones.Soon, the waves broke up the ice around the ship into thousands of smaller pieces.Within an hour,Marchenko and his team saw a wave that was about 13 feet high. The ship's navigation(航行)system finally recorded the largest waves. They were more than 20 feet in height. The waves were so strong that they forced huge pieces of ice to jump up and down, breaking the ice into smaller pieces within just one hour.Scientists had never imagined that the process could happen so fast. The waves in these areas used to be small. The speed and force of the huge waves there makes it impossible to know in advance when they are coming. That could be dangerous for navigators and local communities who are unprepared for huge waves or depend on sea ice to protect them.Wildlife like polar bears and walruses that depend on sea ice to live is also in danger. Some scientists think people will soon see even bigger waves in these icy waters. As waves break up ice,the seas will become more open, and the waves will get even stronger. There are stormy times ahead.(1)When did Marchenko and his students discover huge waves in the arcticwaters?(2)Why did Marchenko and his students set out on the trip?(3)What did Marchenko decide to do to keep safe?(4)How high were the largest waves recorded by the navigation system?(5)What is Paragraph 7 mainly possibly changed.By understanding the psychological (心理学的)processes behind our different experiences of time,we might be able to slow down timea little. One basic law of psychological time is that time seems to slow down when we're exposed (接触)to new environments and experiences. The law is caused by the relationship between our experience of time and the amount of information our minds process. The more information our minds take in,the slower time seems to pass.It follows, then, that we have different experiences of time in different situations. But dependency on a network suggests possibilities of being harmed easily. The collapse of any of the Waves Destroying Arctic Ice Faster than ExpectedIce covers much of the Arctic Ocean(北冰洋).Some pieces of ice are huge, like moving islands. There are stormy times ahead.(1)When did Marchenko and his students discover huge waves in the arcticwaters?(2)Why did Marchenko and his students set out on the trip?(3)What did Marchenko decide to do to keep safe?(4)How high were the largest waves recorded by the navigation shopping to you?How much time do you spend buying things? And how much timedo you spend organizing these things in your home?In the future, how much time will you spend in movie theaters,at amusement parks,at shopping malls,or at convenience stores? When you add it all up,you will probably see you spend a lot of your life consuming(消费)things.Consuming products is not necessarily bad. However,if we spend too much time doing it,we should look at it carefully.Imagine that you have a week off from school. You don't have to go to class. However,in this week, you cannot spend any money﹣﹣﹣﹣﹣no shopping,no movies,no eating out.How would you spend your time? What things would bring you happiness?Perhaps you would take a walk with your best friend.Perhaps you would help a child read.Or you might spend time with your family. When we look back,it is likely that non﹣consuming experiences like these will be our most important memories. Why?Non﹣consuming activities are active, not passive. They don't come in a package. You make the experience yourself. For example, each person who reads to a child will have a different experience. The experience changes with the reader, the child, and the book.Similarly, when you have a conversation with a friend, you are actively creating an experience. The conversation that you have with your friend cannot be experienced or recreated by anyone else. However,if you watch a movie with a friend, you will each have a package experience. It requires no action and little interaction between the two of you.The environment we live in encourages us to have packaged experiences. We feel that we must consume because we believe that buying is doing. However,we can start a personal revolution (变革)against consumerism. How?By consuming less.We can ask ourselves what experiences bring us the greatest satisfaction. Then we can organize our lives so that we have more of those kinds of experiences.49.If consuming products takes too much time,we should.A.spend less moneyB.think about it carefullyC.organize our thingsD.go to convenience stores50.According to the passage, the writer believes that.A.we can say no to consumerism by consuming lessB.buying things can bring us the greatest satisfactionC.the environment seldom influences our shopping choicesD.consuming experiences will be our most important memories51.What is the writer's main purpose in writing this passage?A.To introduce some ways of enjoying our spare time.B.To encourage people to have more active experiences.C.To explain reasons behind people's shopping behavior.D.To share his personal experience in consuming products.52.Say you're sitting around with some friends playing video games and someone mentions a game that happens to be one of your favorites."Oh,that game's easy.So not worth the time,"one of your friendssays. The others agree.Although you enjoy the game quite a lot,not wanting to argue with them, you go along with the crowd. You have just experienced what is commonly referred to as peer pressure(同伴压力),also called peer influence. You will adopt a certain type of behavior, dress,or attitude in order to be accepted as part of a group of your"peers".As a teen, you are likely to have experienced the effect of peer pressure in a number of different areas. We are all influenced by our peers at any age.For teens,as school and other activities take you awayfrom home, you may spend more time with your friends than with your family. As you become more independent, your peers naturally play a greater role in your life.According to Dr.Casey from Cornell University, teens are very quick and accurate in making decisionson their own and in situations where they have time to think. However, when they make decisions in the heat of the moment or in social situations, their decisions are often influenced by factors like peers. In a recent study, teen volunteers played a video driving game, either alone or with friends watching. The researchers discovered that the number of risks teens took more than doubled when their friends were watching, compared with when they played alone. This shows that teens may find it more difficult to control risky behavior when their friends are around,or in situations where they are extremely angry.Just as people can influence us to make unwise choices, they can also influence us to make good ones.A teen might join in a volunteer project because his or her friends are doing it,or get good grades because his or her friends think getting good grades is important. In fact, friends often encourage each other to study,or try out for sports. While we are always influenced by those around us,the decision to act or not is up to us.So when it comes to decision making, the choice is up to you.52.According to the passage,Dr.Casey probably agrees that teens.A.like to play driving games with their friendsB.prefer situations where they have time to thinkC.may take more risks when their friends are aroundD.are slow in making decisions when they are on their own53.The words"in the heat of the moment"in Paragraph 4probably mean"".A.when teens avoid possible risksB.when teens trust their judgmentC.when teens lose control over their angerD.when teens give consideration to situations54.What can we learn from the passage?A.Teens are eager to be different from their peers.B.Peer pressure has effects on both teens and adults.C.Peer pressure does more harm than good to teens.D.Tees think it challenging to get good grades at school.55.Which of the following would be the best organizing these things in your home?In the future, how much time will you spend in movie theaters,at amusement parks,at shopping malls,or at convenience stores? Then we can organize our lives so that we have more of those kinds of experiences.49.If consuming products takes too much time,we should B.A.spend less moneyB.think about it carefullyC.organize our thingsD.go to convenience stores50.According to the satisfaction.通过减少消费,我们可以问问自己,什么经历带给我们最大的满足感.可知根据文章,作者认为我们可以通过减少消费来对消费主义说不.故选A.51.B 细节理解题.根据整篇文章内容及其最后一段最后一句Then we can organize our lives so that we have more of those kinds of experiences.然后我们可以组织我们的生活,使我们有更多的体验.可知为了鼓励人们有更积极的体验.故选B.52.Say you're sitting around with some friends playing video games and someone mentions a game that happens to be one of your favorites."Oh,that game's easy.So not worth the time,"one of your friends says. In arecent study, teen volunteers played a video driving game, either alone or with friends watching. While we are always influenced by those around us,the decision to act or not is up to us.So when it comes to decision making, the choice is up to you.52.According to the passage,Dr.Casey probably agrees that teens C.A.like to play driving games with their friendsB.prefer situations where they have time to thinkC.may take more risks when their friends are aroundD.are slow in making decisions when they are on their own53.The words"in the heat of the moment"in Paragraph 4probably mean"C".A.when teens avoid possible risksB.when teens trust their judgmentC.when teens lose control over their angerD.when teens give consideration to situations54.What can we learn from the passage?BA.Teens are eager to be different from their peers.B.Peer pressure has effects on both teens and adults.C.Peer pressure does more harm than good to teens.D.Tees think it challenging to get good grades at school.55.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?DA.Peer Pressure:Is It Necessary to Deal with It?B.Peer Pressure:Is It Possible to Get Away from It?C.Peer Pressure:Its Benefits to Teens and Friend MakingD.Peer Pressure:Its Influence on Teens and Decision Making.【考点】O9:日常生活类阅读.【分析】文章谈论的是同伴压力对青少年的影响,尤其是对青少年做决定的影响. The you awayfrom home, you may spend more time with your friends than with your family讲的是同伴压力对青少年不好的影响,倒数第二段However, when they make decisions in the heat of the moment or in social situations, their decisions are often influenced by factors like peers是同伴压力对青少年好的影响.最后一段作为总结,告诉我们,如何做决定取决于我们自身.所以文章的主题应该是同伴压力对青少年及做决定的影响.答案选D.2018三、阅读下列短文.根据短文内容,从文后各所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

your test or homework, you might notice that there is no letter E. Have you ever thought about why that is so?In the A, B, C, D and F grading system, the first four letters are typically considered passing grades. An F in this system simply stands for“fail”.The word“fail”happens to start with the letter F, which seems to leave out the letter E. The fact”.Some schools have U grade for“unsatisfactory”,or I grade for “incomplete”.Even with all this said, we should also point out that E grade actually has beenused pretty commonly throughout the history of letter grades in the US.The first college in the US to use a letter grading system like the ones we use today is Mount Holyoke College. In 1897,they began to use the following grading scale: A: 95-100%(excellent) B: 85-94%(good) C: 76-84%(fair)D: 75%(barely passed) E: below 75%(failed)We can see the inclusion of E instead of F.Gradually, the letter grading system became more popular throughout the US. However, many schools decided to drop the E grade and go straight to F.There is no evidence(证据) to really support this, but one possible explanation is that teachers were worried that some students and parents might mistake E for “excellent”.Why do we have letter grades? Well, part of the reason is that they made grading simpler during a time of great change for schools. As the 20th century began, growing cities and an increase in immigration led to larger school classrooms. Most teachers at that time thought this new letter grading system was an easy, fair and clear way to grade students.Today, more and more people argue that letter grades don’t fully reflect(反映) student learning。

organizing these things in your home?In the future, how much time will you spend in movietheaters,at amusement parks,at shopping malls,or at convenience stores? When you add it all up,you will probably see you spend a lot of your life consuming(消费)things.Consuming products is not necessarily bad. However,if we spend too much time doing it,we should look at it carefully.Imagine that you have a week off from school. You don't have to go to class. However,in this week, you cannot spend any money﹣﹣﹣﹣﹣no shopping,no movies,no eating out.How would you spend your time? What things would bring you happiness?Perhaps you would take a walk with your best friend.Perhaps you would help a child read.Or you might spend time with your family. When we look back,it is likely that non﹣consuming experiences like these will be our most importantmemories. Then we can organize our lives so that we have more game's easy.So not worth the time,"one of your friends says. The others agree.Although you enjoy the game quite a lot,not wanting to argue with them, you go along with the crowd. You have just experienced what is commonly referred to as peer pressure(同伴压力),also called peerinfluence. As you become moreindependent, your peers naturally play a greater role in your life.According to Dr.Casey from Cornell University, teens are very quick and accurate in making decisionson their own and in situations where they have time to think. However, when they make decisions in theheat of the moment or in social situations, their decisions are often influenced by factors like peers. In arecent study, teen volunteers played a video driving game, either alone or with friends watching.Theresearchers discovered that the number of risks teens took more than doubled when their friends werewatching, compared with when they played alone. This shows that teens may find it more difficult to control risky behavior when their friends are around,or in situations where they are extremelyangry.Just as people can influence us to make unwise choices, they can also influence us to make good ones.A teen might join in a volunteer project because his or her friends are doing it,or get good grades because his or her friends think getting good grades is important. In fact, friends often encourage each other to study,or try out for sports. While we are always influenced by those around us,the decision to act or not is up to us.So when itcomes to decision making, the choice is up to you.52.According to the passage,Dr.Casey probably agrees that teens C.A.like to play driving games with their friendsB.prefer situations where they have time to thinkC.may take more risks when 2017-2019北京初三英语上学期期末汇编:回答问题含答案
2017-2019近三年北京各区初三期末汇编(5)---回答问题篇2017年1.海淀Could getting a good night’s sleep avoid putting on weight for children?According to a new study, putting preschoolers in bed by 8 P.M.Could reduce their chances of becoming overweight or obese (肥胖) later in life by half. Preschoolers are children around the age of 4 or 5.The researchers from Ohio State University wrote their findings in the Journal of Pediatrics. They have found that young children who go to bed after 9 P.M. are twice as likely to be obese later in life. The lead author of the study is Sarah Anderson. She says that it’s very important for parents to create a bedtime routine for their children. How was the research conducted? Researchers chose 977 children for it. These children are part of a larger project called the Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development. The project follows healthy babies born in 1991 in ten U.S.cities. In order to have a clearer picture of the results, researchers then divided the children into three groups:●those who went to bed by 8 P.M. or earlier●those who went to bed between 8 P.M. and 9 P.M.●those whose bedtimes were after 9 P.M.When these children turned 15 years old, the researchers looked at the results of the study. Of those with the earliest bedtimes, only one out of ten was obese. Of those who went to bed between 8 and 9 at night. 16 percent of the children became obese. And out of those with the latest bedtimes, 23 percent of the children became obese.“Having a usual bedtime routine can lower children’s risk of becoming overweight. Besides, as usual, early bedtime is also likely to have positive effects on behavior and social development,” said Professor Anderson.61. And the disease is so uncommon that only one in every million people has it. Scientists are doing research to find a treatment for thedisease. Dylan told his parents that he wanted to raise money to help pay for the research. His parents suggested having a bake (烘焙品) sale or setting up a lemonade stand, but he had another idea.Dylan took up his pencil and wrote a 16-page book titled Chocolate Bar. The idea for his book came from a phrase that Dylan and Jonah created. The phrase is “so chocolate bar”. It means “so cool” or “so wonderful”.In the book, Dylan writes about some of his favorite things, like swimming and going to the beach. He writes that each experience is“so chocolate bar”.Soon the book was printed. Dylan, his family, and his friends worked hard to prepare for the book sale. At a special event at the boys’school, Dylan told everyone about the book. A store provided chocolate bars to be sold at the school to raise more money for Jonah. Dylan sold all 200 copies of his book and 100 candy bars, making $5,000 in just a few hours. That was just the start. The boys appeared on TV shows to talk about the book. They went to a bookstore in California and signed the books that people bought. At thebook signing event they made even more money. And a website thattells about Jonah’s disease also has copies of the book for sale.So far, Dylan has raised several hundred thousand dollars. Dylan’sgoal is a million dollars. He gives all the money to the scientists in theUniversity of Florida College of Medicine, where they are trying to finda treatment for the disease.Dylan enjoys helping Jonah. During a trip, Buffett said to Flint, “You must have dreams greater than flying me around to where I need to go.” The pilot said he did have big ger dreams. And then Buffett took him through a three-step process for prioritizing(优化), to decide which things are the most important and what to start with.First, Buffett asked Flint to write down a list of twenty-five career goals. Flint took some time and wrote them down. Second, Buffett asked Flint to do some soul-searching and circle the five highest-priority goals on the list. Again, Flint took some time, made his way through the list and eventually decided on his five most important goals. At this point, Buffett asked, “but what about these other 20 things on your list you didn’t circle? What is your plan for completing those?” Flint replied confidently, “Well the five highest-priority goals are the most important but the other twenty come in at a close second. So I’ll work on those twenty as well as I’m getting through my five highest-priority goals.” To Flint’s surprise, Buffett said, “No. You’ve got it wrong. The third step is to take a good hard look at the 20 goals. You should avoid them at all costs. They eat away time and energy, taking your eye from the goals than matter more.”It is a simple process but not always an easy one. We are in a world where there’s more competition for your focus(专注) than ever before. We have to guard it with our life. Without focus, without staying true to our priorities, we will not get done other things we try to fit in and get done what’s most important to ourselves.Every behavior has a cost. But time and energy are limited. Successful people prioritize their most important goals and avoid things but take up time, energy and space that could be put toward better behavior or more important tasks.Once you’ve picked a goal, work towards it while ignoring(忽视) the things that will compete fpr ypur attention.61.Did Flint work for Buffett as a pilot?_______________________________________________________________________________________ 62.How many steps did Buffett take Flint through?_______________________________________________________________________________________ 63.What did Buffett ask flint to do first?_______________________________________________________________________________________ 64.What did Buffett advise Flint to do with the other 20 goals?_______________________________________________________________________________________ 65.Why can prioritizing goals help people to achieve success?_______________________________________________________________________________________Letter A Letter B61. How are parents’ jobs different from children’s jobs according to Letter A?Young people are always told that they should make the most of their time, that they willnever be as free again. So, my question is--why fill up all this free time with housework? Parentsexpect their children to get good grades, be good at sports, and be popular with other kids. However, there is not enough time in the day to do these things and then do housework aswell. It’s not fair to expect teenagers to give up their free time to do boring housework. Parentsand children both have jobs. Parents’ jobs are in the work place. Their children’s jobs are atschool. The only difference is that parents get paid and children don’t. Parents say that they maketheir kids do housework to teach them responsibility(责任). In fact, the English vocabulary is a mixture (混合体) of words from many different languages. Because of this, the vocabulary of the English language is very large. It is much larger than that of almost every other language in the world.[来Many English words come from Latin, the old language of Rome, and also from ancient Greek (希腊语). From Latin we get words like “wine”, “use” and “day”. From ancient G reek we have words such as “ink”. Because these two languages are dead languages the words have most often come through other languages such as French, or the old German languages. There are also many modern words made up from both Greek and Latin roots –“television”, for example. The word is made up of “tele”, Greek for “far”, and “vision”, a word from Latin meaning “seeing”.Many common English words come from very strange places. “Tea”, for example, comes from China, and “banana” comes from West Africa. “Potato” came into Englis h language from the island of Haiti, in the West Indies, and “tomato” first came from Mexico. One reason why the English language has so many words from other languages is that people from many different countries have come to live in Britain. Two thousand years ago the Romans came from Italy, and stayed for over four hundred years. After they left, the Anglo Saxons and Jutes came from the northern part of modern Germany. In the ninth and tenth centuries Scandinavians came into the northern and eastern parts of the country. Finally, in the eleventh century William of Normandy came from France, and became King of England. With him came the French language. In modern Britain there are four separate languages: English, Welsh, Scottish Gaelic and Irish Gaelic. And the English itself borrowed many words from the other three languages. The English language continues to grow and borrow words from other languages. It is not only the language of Britain, but also of Canada, the U.S.A., Australia and New Zealand. It is used by millions of people in Africa and Asia.61.Why is the vocabulary of the English language very large?_______________________________________________________________________________________62.Which language does the word “ink” come from?_______________________________________________________________________________________ 63.When did the Scandinavians arrive in Britain?_______________________________________________________________________________________ 64.How long did the Romans stay in Britain?_______________________________________________________________________________________ 65.What does this passage mainly talk about?_______________________________________________________________________________________6.通州Television is one of the greatest technological inventions of the 20th century. A Scottish man called John Logie Baird invented it. Inventors in the USA and Europe were working on electronic television systems but Baird used a mechanical (机械的)system. In 1925, he was able to send the first black and white picture – of the head of a doll – from one end of his flat to the other. He then used a local office boy, not the doll, and this teenager was the first person ever to appear on TV.In January 1926, Baird invited scientists to his flat and showed them his invention. He called it a ―televisor. Later that year Baird started the world’s first TV station and gave it the name 2TV. In 1927, he sent images 730 kilometres from London toGlasgow using telephone cables (电缆). A year later, his company sent the firsttransatlantic (大西洋彼岸的) TV images from London to New York. Baird made the first television programmes for the BBC in 1929. These programmes had sound, not just pictures. However, Baird’s system was very limited and basic (基本的). A totally electronicsystem was more popular and practical. The inventor of this electronic system was an American, Philo Farnsworth. In 1936, the BBC started using Farnsworth’s system because the picture was better than Baird’s.More and more people had televisions after the Second World War. Colour TV began in the USA in the 1940s but only a small number of people had colourtelevisions in their houses. They were very expensive. In Britain and the USA, the first regular (有规律的) colour TV programmes only began in 1967.Now in the 21st century, we have digital televisio n. TV has changed a lot since the face of a boy appeared on TV in John Logie Baird’s flat!61.Is television a great technological invention of the 20th century?______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 63.Who invented the totally electronic system?_______________________________________________________________________________________ 64.When did colour televisions go into their houses in America?_______________________________________________________________________________________ 65.What is the passage mainly about?_______________________________________________________________________________________7.昌平Twenty years ago, I drove a taxi for a living. One night I went to pick up a passenger at 2:30 am. When I arrived, I found the building was dark except for a single light in a ground floor window.I walked to the door and knocked, “Just a minute,” answered a weak, elderly voice. After a long time, the door opened. A small woman in her eighties stood before me. By her side was a small suitcase.I took the suitcase to the car, and then returned to help the woman. She took my arm and we walked slowly toward the car.She kept thanking me for my ki ndness. “It’s nothing,” I told her. “I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother treated.”“Oh, you’re such a good man.” She said. When we got into the taxi, she gave me an address, and then asked, “Could you drive through downtown?”“It’s not the shortest way,” I answered quickly.“Oh, I’m in no hurry,” she said. “I’m on my way to a hospice(临终医院).I don’t have any family left. The doctor says I don’t have very long.”I quietly reached over and shut off the meter(计价器).For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked, the neighborhood where she had lived, and the furniture shop that had once been a ballroom where she had gone dancing as a girl.Sometimes she’d ask me to slow down in f ront of an unusual building and would sit looking at into the darkness, saying nothing. In the early morning, she suddenly said,” I’m tired. Let’s go now.”We drove in silence to the address she had given me.“How much should I pay?” she asked.“Nothing.” I said.“You have to make a living,” she answered. “Oh, there are other passengers,” Ianswered.Almost without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug. She held onto me tightly. Our own planet, Earth, is becoming more and more crowded and polluted. Luckily, we can start again and build a better world on Mars. Here is what life could be like.First of all, transport(交通) should be much better. At present, our spaceships are too slow to carry large numbers of people to Mars—it takes a few months. However, by 2100, spaceship can travel at half the speed of light. It might take us two or three days to get to Mars!Secondly, humans need food, water and air to live. Scientists should be able to develop plants that can be grown on Mars. These plants will produce the food and air that we need. However, can these plants produce water for us? There is no answer now. There is a problem for us to live on Mars. Mars suck(吸引) us much less than Earth does. This will be dangerous because we could easily jump too high and fly slowly away into space. To prevent this, humans on Mars have to wear special shoes to make themselves heavier. There will probably be no school on Mars. Every student will have a computer at home which is connected to the Internet. They can study, do their homework and take exams in online schools. Each student will also have their own online teacher called “e-teacher”.Life on Mars will be better than that on Earth in many ways. People will have more space. Living in a large building with only 10 bedrooms is highly possible. Many people believe that robots will do most of our work, so we have more time for our hobbies. However, in some ways, life on Mars may not be better than that on Earth today. Food will not be the same—meals will probably be in the form of pills(片状物) and will not be as delicious as they are today. Also, space travel will make many people feel ill. The spaceship will travel fast but the journey to Mars will probably be very uncomfortable.61.Is Earth becoming more and more crowded and polluted?_______________________________________________________________________________________ 62.How long might it take us to get to Mars by spaceship by 2100?_______________________________________________________________________________________63.What can the students do in online schools on Mars?_______________________________________________________________________________________ 64.Why will life on Mars be better than life on Earth?_______________________________________________________________________________________ 65. It may be hard to picture it now, but a man named Sequoyah lived in such a world. Sequoyah was a member of anative American tribe, the Cherokee. Cherokee people speak their own language, but for hundreds of years they did not have a system of writing. Without a writingsystem, the Cherokee had no newspapers or books before 1809.Sequoyah was probably born around the year 1770 and lived with hismother in a small village in the mountains of Tennessee. When he grew up, he became a blacksmith. When he was doing business with those “English-speaking people”, he noticed that they used paper with marks to record their thoughts and ideas. Se quoyah called these pieces of paper with marks “talking leaves”. He began to wonder why people who spoke Cherokee did not have a way to write down their words. In 1809, Sequoyah decided to give the Cherokee their own “talking leaves”. At first he tried to make a different symbol for every word in the Cherokee language. But in that case, there would be so many symbols and too hard for people to remember, so he decided to make a picture for each syllable (音节). After much hard work, Sequoyah invented 85 symbols. In order to see whether it would work, he helped his six-year-old daughter Ay oka learn each symbol and found she could learn to read and write very quickly. Sequoyah’s invention was a success! Before long, Sequoyah’s writing system had spread far and wide. Cherokee people living in all different parts of the country learned to read and write. In 1825, Sequoyah’s system was made the official written language for Cherokee people. To this day, Cherokee speakers still use Sequoyah’s writing system. In some parts of the United States, you can see street signs and billboards written in both English and Cherokee. What if your bird held a colored pencil in its beak(喙) and painted on a piece of paper? Most people may think of animal art as a joke, but some people have been taking it very seriously.Elephants were used for hundreds of years in Thailand's logging industry(伐木业) . They moved wood from forests in areas where there were no roads. At the beginning of this century, when the forests of Thailand began to quickly disappear, the government put a stop to logging. All of a sudden, many elephants in Thailand no longer had a way to make a living. Some elephants were treated badly. Others had to try to live on their own and couldn't find enough to eat. There were once tens of thousands of elephants in Thailand. Today, there are less than five thousand. When two Russian-American artists, Vitaly Komar and Alex Melamid, first heard about the troubled elephants of Thailand, they knew that something change had to be done to forever change the way people treated Thai elephants. Then, they came up with an idea to help these elephants.Komar and Melamid visited elephant camps in Thailand and began to show the elephant trainers how to teach the elephants to paint. At first, the trainer had to guide the elephant's trunk. The elephants became more comfortable doing this with practice-- and lots of sweet snacks-- and finally started to paint on their own. The strange idea that Komar and Melamid had to save the elephants actually began to work. They even helped found several elephant art schools in Thailand and in other Asian countries. The elephants find their trainers go there to learn about painting and get supplies they need.Today, people begin to buy elephant artwork from galleries(画廊) all around the world. Some are even willing to pay more than $2,000 for the work of the elephant artists! Some people compare the cheerful, brightly-colored artwork to the work of some great abstract(抽象的) painters. Some people are just happy to buy these special and original(原创的) art works. Others think they are helping the troubled elephants in this way. The next time you see a piece of colorful abstract art, find out who the artist is. You just may be surprised at what you learn!1.What may most people think of animal art?_____________________________________________________________________________________ 2.What did elephants do in Thailand's logging industry?_____________________________________________________________________________________ 3.How many elephants are there in Thailand today?_____________________________________________________________________________________ 4.What was Komar and Melamid's idea to help the elephants in Thailand?_____________________________________________________________________________________ 5.Please list one reason why people buy elephant artwork._____________________________________________________________________________________Albino PowerI was born an albino(白化病患者)in Scranton, Pennsylvania, in 1945. No one in my family had ever known what an albino was, what it meant to be an albino, what had to be done differently because I was an albino. My parents and friends treated me just like they treated everybody else. That was just about the best thing they could have done. It gave me a leg up on trusting myself, so when troubles came along, I could deal with them.True, my schoolbook photo always looked like a snowball with two pieces of eyes. Like most albinos, I had terrible eyesight, but the fact that I could hardly see didn't worry me all that much.Kids laughed at me, calling me "Whitey". People stared at me when I held reading material right at the tip of my nose so I could see it well enough to read. Even when I was eight or nine, movie-theater workers started asking me to pay adult prices because I "looked older".The worst part for me was that because my eyesight was so bad, I couldn't play sports very well. I didn't give up trying, though. I practiced playing basketball every day. And I studied harder. Finally, I got better at school and loved it. By the time I got to college, I was double majoring(专业), going to summer school and taking part in every kind of after-class activity I could find. I had learned to be proud of being an albino. I did my best to make " albino" a positive word. And I decided to make my living with my eyes —and in sports.I couldn't see well enough to play sports, but with a good and long-lasting education and the drive to do it, I could make a living involved in the area I loved. I've done it now for more than thirty years in print and in video, and now in cyberspace. People make jokes about how I'm the only "blind editor(编辑)" they know, but the jokes are friendly smiles now, and some of them are signs of respect. And I make jokes about being an albino. I have even developed an all-white routine, if you could call it that.I was just a proud albino kid from the coal country of Pennsylvania. I now realize that being born an albino helped me to get over difficulties, become confident, and be proud of my personal achievement.1.How did the writer's parents and friends treat him?_____________________________________________________________________________________ 2.Why couldn't the writer play sports very well?_____________________________________________________________________________________ 3.What was the writer doing by the time he got to college?_____________________________________________________________________________________ 4.What does the writer think of the "blind editor" jokes now?_____________________________________________________________________________________ 5.What does "Albino Power" mean to the writer?_____________________________________________________________________________________。

your test or homework, you might notice that there is no letter E.
