Researchers at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) recently analyzed such chemical leftovers on the phones of 39 volunteers.Amina Bouslimani led the study. As a biochemist, she studies the chemical processes that take place inside organisms. Her team’s new tests often could discover if a phone’s owner liked spicy food, drank coffee or used perfume. The tests could point to places someone had recently visited. They could even point to whether he or she was ill. “Like your skin, your phone also reflects who you are and what you do,” she says. That’s because average people spend about five hours a day handling their cellphone, she notes.Jack Gilbert is a professor at the University of Chicago in Illinois. He studies how microbes relate to each other and their surroundings. The UCS D research is exciting, he says. That’s because it allows scientists to reconstruct details of a phone owner’s lifestyle. Consider someone who has just lunched on a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. “A small amount of the jelly, the bread, the butter and e ven the peanut would be left on your hands,” says Jack Gilbert. “That would be true even after you have washed them. In fact, washing would add traces of soap.”To probe those residues, the UCSD team wiped the surface of each volunteer’s phone with a cotton swab (棉签). The scientists also swabbed each person’s right hand. Then the researchers compared the chemicals found on each. If the chemicals matched, it would suggest that those molecules from the skin had been transferred to a user’s phone, says co-auth or Pieter Dorrestein. He’s a UCSD pharmaceutical chemist. The scientists identified as many of the molecules as they could. They then compared these to a database of chemicals. Dorrestein had helped set up that database a few years earlier. It contains various compounds, including spices, caffeine and medicines.Traces of hundreds to thousands of different molecules turned up on each phone. The molecules reflected what had been in the body, such as medications and food. They also reflected what each person had handled before touching the phone, such as soap or makeup. Indeed, the majority of molecules came from beauty products, medicines and food. From all of this, Bouslimani says, “We could tell if a person is likely female, uses high-end cosmetics, dyes he r hair, drinks coffee, prefers beer to wine or likes spicy food.” These chemical leftovers might also show whether someone wears sunscreen or uses perfume. If so, that could point to someone who spends a lot of time outdoors.42. Why did the researchers conduct the study?A. To learn about the life of today’s people.B. To see if there are chemicals on the surface of phones.C. To see if things on a phone’s surface tell about the owner.D. To find out how long people usually use their phone daily.43. What Jack Gilbert says suggests that ______.A. he doesn’t think highly of the studyB. we should cut down on the time of using phonesC. it’s easy to know a phone owner’s long-term lifestyleD. washing hands doesn’t stop adding things to the phone44. What doe s the underlined word “residues” in Paragraph 4 mean?A. Surfaces of the phones.B. Phone owners.C. Chemical leftovers.D. V olunteers’ phones.45. What is the best title of the passage?A. Your phone can let out your secretsB. Your phone attracts a lot of chemicalsC. Learn about others through their phonesD. Fingers leave clues about you on your phone四、任务型阅读(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)When we buy something from the market, often we are slightly skeptical of the seller. Why is it so? We are worried that the seller might know something that we do not know. We are scared that asymmetric (不对称的) information might get involved in. It is only after a good experience that we build confidence in the seller. However, if we make a wrong selection due to concealment (隐藏) by the seller, we might be a victim of adverse selection. Adverse selection can be defined as a phenomenon in the market that arises due to asymmetric information between buyers and sellers, which leads to a loss for either of the two. Here is an example of adverse selection. In the insurance industry, typically, those who are at a higher risk to health problems will find it beneficial to buy an insurance policy than a healthy person who is at much lower risk. Those who are healthy will find the premiums (保费) too high to pay, hence, they will avoid getting the insurance cover. Also, the insured might hide vital data that might threaten his health or life, and choose not to disclose the information to the insurer. For example, a smoker is more likely to suffer from health problems, and hence, he will tend to buy an insurance policy to lower the risk than a non-smoker. That means even non-smokers have to pay a high premium, which discourages them from buying the insurance policy. This is a huge loss to the insurance company. Sometimes, the insurance company might not be able to distinguish between high-risk and low-risk investors, due to which, it might be difficult for them to compute the insurance premium. For another example, if a lender doesn’t do a proper verification (查证) of the financial position of a firm to which it is lending money, and accordingly, doesn’t charge higher interest rates on high-risk borrowers, that will lead to adverse selection. To relieve the risk, if the lender increases the interest rates, the good parties who cannot afford high interest rates will automatically be driven out.Adverse selection, if unchecked, can create a lot of financial problems. For example, with lesser investments due to adverse selection, insurance firms may suffer, as without investments, there will be lesser capital for expansion and development activities. If high-risk investors are more, insurance company’s revenue will decrease considerably. Also asymmetric information may lead to a lot of financial losses. For example, if you buy a used car which doesn’t give performance as much as what is expected, your investment in that car isn’t getting optimum returns. Worse still, adverse selection can result in market failure. In this case, even the good brands suffer due to the presence of bad products, since the buyer or the seller cannot distinguish between the two.To conclude, adverse selection is a market failure that can lead to financial losses for either the buyer or the seller. Fortunately, adverse selection can be stopped if adequate information is available in the market.2018届高三英语第五周周练试卷2017.9.28高三()班姓名______________ 学号______ 得分________。

Week 5 WednesdayTask 1:阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

(2016·浙江,D)Two things changed my life:my mother and a white plastic bike basket.I have thought long and hard about it and it’s true.I would be a different person if my mom hadn’t turned a silly bicycle accessory into a life lesson I carry with me today. My mother and father were united in their way of raising children, but it mostly fell to my mother to actually carry it out.Looking back,I honestly don’t know how she did it.Managing the family budget must have been a very hard task, but she made it look effortless. If we complained about not having what another kid did,we’d hear something like,“I don’t care what so-and-so got for his birthday, you are not getting a TV in your room/a car for your birthday/a lavish sweet-16 party.” We had to earn our allowance(零用钱) by doing chores around the house.I can still remember how long it took to polish the legs of our coffee table. My brothers can no doubt remember hours spent cleaning the house.Like the two little girls growing up at the White House,we made our own beds (no one left the house until that was done)and picked up after ourselves. We had to keep track of our belongings, and if something was lost,it was not replaced. It was summer and,one day,my mother drove me to the bike shop to get a tire fixed—and there it was in the window.White, shiny, plastic and decorated with flowers, the basket winked at me and I knew—I knew—I had to have it.“It’s beautiful,” my mother said when I pointed it out to her,“What a neat basket.”I tried to hold off at first.I played it cool for a short while. But then I guess I couldn’t stand it any longer:“Mom,please can I please, please get it? I’ll do extra chores for as long as you say.I’ll do anything, but I need that basket.I love that basket.Please,Mom.Please?”I was desperate.“You know,” she said, gently rubbing my back while we both stared at whatI believed was the coolest thing ever,“If you save up you could buy this yourself.”“By the time I make enough it’ll be gone!”“Maybe Roger here could hold it for you,” she smiled at Roger, the bike guy.“He can’t hold it for that long,Mom.Someone else will buy it.Please,Mom,please?”“There might be another way,”she said. And so our paying plan unfolded. My mother bought the beautiful basket and put it safely in some hiding place I couldn’t find. Each week I eagerly counted my growing saving increased by extra work here and there (washing the car, helping my mother make dinner, delivering or collecting things on my bike that already looked naked without the basket in front). And then, weeks later,I counted,re-counted and jumped for joy.Oh,happy day! I made it! I finally had the exact amount we’d agreed upon...Days later the unthinkable happened.A neighborhood girl I’d played with millions of times appeared with the exact same basket fixed to her shiny, new bike that already had all the bells and whistles.I rode hard and fast home to tell my mother about this disaster. This horrible turn of events. And then came the lesson I’ve taken with me through my life:“Honey, your basket is extra-special,” Mom said, gently wiping away my hot tears.“Your basket is special because you paid for it yourself.”【语篇解读】 本文为一篇记叙文。

2018版高考英语(外研版)一轮总复习习题 必修5 Module 5 Word版含解析

第一部分 必修五 Module 5Ⅰ.阅读理解A(2015·江西八校高三联考)导学号 02280716 There is a very instructive incident involving the life of Alexander, the great Greek king. Alexander, after conquering many kingdoms, was returning home. On the way, he fell ill and it took him to his death bed. With death staring him in his face, Alexander realized how his conquests, his great army, his sharp sword and all his wealth were of no consequence. So, he lay helplessly waiting to breathe his last. He called his generals and said, “I will depart from this world soon, I have three wishes, please carry them out without fail.”“My first desire is that,”said Alexander, “My physicians alone must carry my coffin.” After a pause, he continued, “Secondly, I desire that when my coffin is being carried to the grave, the path leading to the graveyard be strewn(撒满) with gold, silver and precious stones which I have collected.” The king continued, “My third and last wish is that both my hands be kept hanging out of my coffin.” Alexander's favorite general kissed his hand and pressed them to his heart. “Oh King, we assure you that your wishes will all be fulfilled. But tell us why do you make such strange wishes?”At this Alexander took a deep breath and said, “I would like the world to know of the three lessons I have just learnt. I want my physicians to carry my coffin because people should realize that no doctor can really cure any body. They are powerless and cannot save a person from the clutches of death. So let people not take life for granted. The second wish of strewing gold, silver and other riches on the way to the graveyard is to tell people that not even a bit of gold will come with me. I spent all my life earning riches but cannot take anything with me. Let people realize that it is just a waste of time to chase wealth. And about my third wish of having my hands hanging out of the coffin, I wish people to know that I came empty-handed into this world and empty-handed I go out of this world.” With these words, the king closed his eyes. Soon he let death conquer him and breathed his last.语篇解读:本文主要通过亚历山大去世前的三大愿望告诉读者:珍惜生活,财富生不带来,死不带去。

(2015·湖北,C)Hilversum is a medium-sized city between the major cities of Amsterdam and Utrecht in the Gooi area of North Holland, the Netherlands.Unlike most of the Netherlands,Hilversum is actually in a hilly area with the soil mostly consisting of sand.Once called the Garden of Amsterdam,it still attracts travelers to come over to cycle and walk through the surrounding forests. They visit it for a relaxing day off from the urban madness. For Dutch people,Hilversum is all about textile(纺织) and media industries, and modern architecture. In history,Hilversum was largely an agricultural area.Daily life was marked by farming, sheep raising and wool production.A railway link to Amsterdam in 1874 attracted rich traders from Amsterdam to Hilversum. They built themselves large villas(别墅) in the wooded surroundings of the town. One of the families moving in was the Brenninkmeijers, currently the wealthiest family of the Netherlands. They moved in after big success in the textile industry and aided a substantial textile industry in Hilversum. But the textile boom lasted only several decades. The last factory closed in the 1960s.The change to a media economy started in 1920,when the Nederlandse Seintoestellen Fabriek(NSF) established a radio factory in Hilversum. Most radio stations settled in the large villas in the leafy areas of the town.Television gave another push to the local economy.Hilversum became the media capital of the Netherlands, and Dutch television stars moved into the leafy neighborhoods surrounding the town.In the early 1900s,modern architects W.M.Dudok and J.Duiker placed hundreds of remarkable buildings in Hilversum. These modern architectural masterpieces(杰作) are so many that Hilversum almost feels like an open air museum.Dudok alone shaped most of 20th century Hilversum and approximately 75 buildings still bear his unique characteristics. His masterpiece,Hilversum Town Hall, was built in 1928-1931.It has wide international fame and is included in manyarchitecture textbooks. The building has a remarkable shape and looks like a combination of “blocks”.Actually, one may start his journey of modern architecture by walking or biking the W.M.Dudok Architectural Route in Hilversum.【语篇解读】文章主要介绍荷兰小镇Hilversum的前世今生。

AIt’s rare that you see the words “shyness” and “letter” in the same sentence. After all,the common viewpoint is that those outgoing and sociable guys make great public speakers and excellent networkers and that those shy people are not.A survey conducted by USA Today referred to 65 percent of executives who believed shyness to be a barrier to leadership.Interestingly, the same article stresses that roughly 40 percent of leaders actually are quite shy—they're just better at adapting themselves to situational demands.Bill Gates,Warren Buffet and Charles Schwab are just a few "innies".Unlike their outgoing counterparts who are more sensitive to rewards and risk-taking,shy people take a cautious approach to chance.Rather than the flashy chit-chat that defines social gathering, shy people listen attentively to what others say and absorb it before they speak. They're not thinking about what to say while the other person is still talking, but rather listening so they can learn what to say.Along the same lines, shy people share a common love of learning. They are intrinsically(内在地)motivated and therefore seek content regardless of achieving an outside standard.Being shy can also bring other benefits.Remember being in school and hearing the same kids contribute, until shy little Johnny, who almost never said a word, cut in?Then what happened? Everyone turned around to look with great respect at little Johnny actually talking. This is how shy people made good use of their power of presence: they "own" the moment by speaking calmly and purposefully, which translate to a positive image.Shyness is often related to modesty. Not to say that limelight-seekers aren't modest, but shy people tend to have an accurate sense of their abilities and achievements. As a result, they are able to acknowledge mistakes, imperfections, knowledge gaps and limitations.Since shy people have a lower sensitivity to outside rewards than outgoing ones, they're more comfortable working with little information and sticking to their inner desires.Shy people are also more likely to insist on finding solutions that aren't primarily apparent.Don't believe me?Maybe you'll believe Albert Einstein, who once said,"It's not that I'm so smart,it's that I stay with problems longer."Obviously, finding certainty where uncertainty is typically popular is a huge plus for any successful person. The myth that shy people are less effective leaders than their outgoing fellows is just a misunderstanding.Make wise use of your personality strengths to lead your business no matter what side of the range you fall on.1.We can learn from Paragraph 2 that_______.A.shy people are sensitive to rewardsB.shy people care more about contentC.outgoing people are more careful about chancesD.outgoing people consider what to learn while listening2.The example of Johnny shows______.A.shy people are likely to be modestB.hardworking students speak little in publicC.some students keep silent on purpose at schoolD.shy people may have an advantage in discussion3.We can learn from the underlined sentence in Paragraph 5 that______.A.shyness results in successB.shyness contributes to popularityC.outside reward leads to insistenceD.uncertainty counts more than certainty4.The author supports his ideas mainly by______.A.giving definitions and presenting research resultsB.explaining problems and providing solutionsC.quoting authorities and making evaluationsD.making contrasts and gibing examplesB“Can’t hold a candle to” is a popular expression. When there wasn’t electricity, someone would have a servant light his way by holding a candle. The expression meant that the person who cannot hold a candle to you is not fit even to be your servant. Now,it means such a person cannot compare or compete.Another expression is “hold your tongue.”It means to be still and not talk.“Hold your tongue”is not something you would tell a friend. But a parent or teacher might use the expression to quiet a noisy child.“Hold out”is an expression one hears often in sports reports and labor news.It means to refuse to play or work. Professional football and baseball players “hold out”if their team refuses to pay them what they think they are worth. The expression “hold up” has several different meanings. One is a robbery.A man with a gun may say,“This is a hold up.Give me your money.”Another meaning is to delay.A driver who was held up by heavy traffic might be late for work.Another meaning is for a story to be considered true after an investigation.A story can hold up if it is proved true.“Hold on” is another expression, which means wait or stop.As you leave for school, your brother may say,“Hold on,you forgot your book.” It is used to ask a telephone caller to wait and not hang up his telephone. Our final expression is “hold the line.”That means to keep a problem or situation from getting worse—to hold steady. For example, the president may say he will “hold the line on taxes.”He means there will be no increase in taxes.5.The expression “can’t hold a candle to” can be used when _______.A.some footballers refuse to play a gameB.someone else is wanted on the phoneC.someone is not qualified for a positionD.someone was delayed by heavy traffic6.The tune of the phrase “hold your tongue” is probably a little_______.A.amusingB.politeC.unfriendlyD.offensive7.If some teachers “hold out”,they probably______.A.change their attitudeB.refuse to workC.make a compromiseD.show their devotion8.Which of the following sentences can convey positive meanings?A.I was late as I was held up by a hold up.B.Hold on!You have to pay the bill,sir.C.You can’t even hold a candle to Michael.D.I promise to hold the line on house prices.CHow can we reduce the risk? There are four general approaches to dealing with volcanic(火山似的)dangers. We can try to keep the danger from occurring—often an impossible task.We can try to change its path or reduce its impact on existing development. We can take steps to protect future development. We can also do our best to have disaster response plans in place before they are needed.Removing the ThreatClearly, there is no way to stop an eruption. We can, however, attempt to reduce the eruption’s effects by strengthening structures, for example, building protective works such as walls to make lava(熔岩)flow away from developed areas.Such efforts can be and have been successful, but are of limited use in a large-scale(范围)eruption.Planning for the FutureProtecting future development from volcanic dangers is a simple task. Before building houses,we should judge the risk.If the risk seems too great,a safer location should be found. This type of planning is very effective, but all too often, people are drawn to the lush(葱郁的),rolling land of a quiet volcano.Disaster Preparedness(预案)When a volcano comes to life,a few weeks may not be enough to avoid a tragedy.Planning is the key to saving lives.Well before the warning signs occur, people must be educated about volcanic dangers.Escape plans must be inmunication between scientists, officials, the media, and the general public should be practiced.Emergency measures must be thought out and agreed upon.If you doubt the importance of these efforts, take another look at past volcanic tragedies, such as the eruption of Nevado del munication failures left the town of Armero unprepared for escape. When a deadly mudflow came down the slope(斜坡),21,000 people—90 percent of the town’s people—died.9.The passage is intended for_______.A.the general publicB.architectsC.adventurersD.geographers10.When building houses, people tend to______.A.judge volcanic dangers carefullyB.take volcanic dangers seriouslyC.live near a quiet volcanoD.find a safer place far away from a volcano11.The writer mentioned Nevado del Ruiz to prove______.A.the failure to keep volcanic dangers from happeningB.the importance of preparing for a volcanic eruptionC.the bravery of the people in Armero TownD.the uncertainty of volc ano’s damageDI was born and raised in Minnesota, the USA,but us an adult I have mostly lived in Europe and Africa.I teach cross-cultural management at the International Business School near Paris. For the last 15 years,I’ve studied how people in different parts of the world build trust, communicate, and make decisions especially in the workplace. While traveling in Tokyo recently with Japanese colleague,I gave a short talk to a group of 20 managers. At the end,I asked whether there were any questions or comments. No hands went up,so I went to sit down.My colleague whispered to me,“I think there actually were some comments,Erin.Do you mind if I try?”I agreed, but I guessed it a waste of breath. He asked the group again,“Any comments or questions?”Still,no one raised a hand, but this time he looked very carefully at each person in the silent audience.Gesturing to one of them,he said,“Do you have something to add?”To my amazement, she responded “Yes,thank you.” and asked me a very interesting question. My colleague repeated this several times, looking directly at the audience and asking for more questions or comments. After the session,I asked my colleague,“H ow do you know that those people had questions?”He hesitated, not sure how to explain it,and then said,“It has to do with how bright their eyes are.”He continued,“In Japan,we don’t make as much direct eye contact as you do in the West.So when you asked if there were any comments, most people were not looking directly at you.But a few people in the group were looking rig ht at you,and their eyes were bright. That indicates that they would be happy to have you call on them.”I thought to myself I would never have learned from my upbringing in Minnesota.Since then,I try to focus on understanding behavior in other cultures I encounter, and keep finding the bright eyes in the room.12.What can we conclude from the first paragraph?A.Life in Minnesota has made the author worn out.B.The author enjoys traveling around the world.C.Different cultures are kind of familiar to the author.D.The author may start his own business in the future.13.Hearing the colleague whispering, the author______.A.went back to his seat and got seatedB.knew his colleague had some questionsC.owed a big debt of gratitude to his colleagueD.thought his colleague would get nowhere14.Where does the author’s colleague probably come from?A.Japan.B.America.C.Africa.D.France15.Which is the proper title for the passage?A.Focusing on Behavior in Cultures.B.Looking at Another Culture in the Eye.C.Sharing Different Cultures in Tokyo.D.Admiring the Beauty in the Eye.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
