高中英语:Unit 5 Section ⅡⅠ.阅读理解AIn the second half of each year, many powerful storms are born in the tropical Atlantic and Caribbean seas.Of these, only about half a dozen generate the strong, circling winds of 75 miles per hour or more that give them hurricane status, and several usually make their way to the coast. There they cause millions of dollars of damage, and bring death to large numbers of people. The great storms that hit the coast start as innocent circling disturbances (气旋) hundreds—even thousands—of miles out to sea.As they travel aimlessly over water warmed by the summer sun, they are carried westward by the trade winds. When conditions are just right, warm, moist (潮湿的) air flows in at the bottom of such a disturbance, moves upward through it and comes out at the top.In the process, the moisture in this warm air produces rain, and with it the heat is switched to energy in the form of strong winds. As the heat increases, the young hurricane begins to turn around in a counterclockwise motion (逆时针方向).The average life of a hurricane is only about nine days, but it contains almost more power than we can imagine. The energy in the heat released (释放) by a hurricane's rainfall in a single day would satisfy the entire electrical needs of the United States for more than six months.Water, rather than wind, is the main source of death and destroying in a hurricane.A typical hurricane brings 6to12inch downpours resulting in sudden floods.Worst of all is the powerful movement of the sea—the mountains of water moving towards the lowpressure hurricane center. The water level rises as much as 15 feet above normal as it moves towards shore.文章大意:文章讲述了飓风的形成过程——是达到每小时75英里以上的热带风暴形成的,和飓风给大自然和人类带来的巨大危害。

Unit 5 The power of naturePart Two: Teaching Resources (第二部分:教学资源)Section 1: A text structure analysis of AN EXCITING JOBI. Type of writing and summary of the textII. A retold version of the textMy job is traveling distant mountains to observe them and meet people from around the mountains. The mountains are not the ordinary ones you see daily. They are volcanoes. So I may work outdoors, use instruments and meet with occasional dangerous eruptions. The job is dangerous and exciting. It makes me feel excited. For I am out to keep people alive and protect them from being hurt.I am now work for a Hawaiian volcano observatory. I collect information about an active volcano called MountKilauea. You may not have heard of it, I think. When a volcano erupts we try to save lives by urging people to leave their homes as quick as possible. Then, very soon, the houses, the villages might be moved out of places and get covered with volcano ashes. All that existin its path would be burned to the ground by the boiling rock erupted from the crater of the volcano. Huge rocks might crash to the sky and back to the ground, causing great dangers to all that is around the mountain. The high buildings fall down and bee buried under the molten rock.Even today, years after, I still cannot forget my first sight of the volcano eruption. That day we arrived at a small mountain village close to a volcano. We went to bed and soon fell fast asleep. All of sudden we heard a strong sound outside the window. Because I had experienced earthquakes before, I did not take much notice. I went back to sleep. Then suddenly the sky outside became as bright as day. I ran out of the room into the back garden to see in the distance the volcano erupting in the side of the mountain. It was fountaining violently into the sky. It was really an absolutely fantastic sight. The next day I was lucky to have a closer look at the volcano. I was driven up the mountain to be very close to the crater to collect ashes from it. I put on thick glasses and jacket look like a spaceman in the flying suits. We made our way to the top of the smoking mountain. We looked down into the crater and climbed down into it. We collected lots of rock and ash for later study. We stayed at the top for two hours, being so enthusiastic about the job and so amazed at the sight that we took no notice of the damage which might done to us.。
