The constant sunshine and mild climate of southern California made it an ideal site for shooting pictures. Hollywood’s fame and fortune reached its peak in the 1930s and 1940s. In those days Hollywood was like a magnet, drawing ambitious young men and women from all over the world. Most of them had only their good looks to recommend and had no acting experience or ability-whatsoever. Occasionally they got jobs, if they were lucky enough to be noticed. Some people worked in cafes or gas stations, hoping to attract the attention of some important person connected with the movies. Most of them hoped in vain.As for the stars themselves, they were under control by the studio chief who could make or break stars. ShoutingPassage ThreeCulture is one of the most challenging elements of the international marketplace. This system of learned behavior patterns characteristic of the members of a given society is constantly shaped by a set of dynamic variables: language, religion, values and attitudes, manners and customs, aesthetics, technology, education, and social institutions. To cope with this system, an international manager needs both factual and interpretive knowledge of culture. To some extent, the factual knowledge can be learned; its interpretation comes only through experience. The most complicated problems in dealing with the cultural environment stem from the fact that one cannot learn culture—one has to live it. Two schools of thought exist in the business world on how to deal with cultural diversity. One is that business is business the world around, following the model of Pepsi and McDonald’s. In some cases, globalization is a fact of life; however, cultural differences are still far fromconverging. The other school proposes that companies must tailor business approaches to individual cultures. Setting up policies and procedures in each country has been compared to an organ transplant; the critical question centers around acceptance or rejection. The major challenge to the international manager is to make sure that rejection is not a result of cultural myopia or even blindness.Fortune examined the international performance of a dozen large companies that earn 20 percent or more of their revenue overseas. The internationally successful companies all share an important quality: patience. They have not rushed into situations but rather built their operations carefully by following the most basic business principles. These principles are to know your adversary, know your audience, and know your customer.11. According to the passage, which of the following is true?A. All international managers can learn culture.B. Business diversity is not necessary.C. Views differ on how to treat culture in business world.D. Most people do not know foreign culture well.12. According to the author, the model of Pepsi_________.A. is in line with the theories that the business is business the world around.B. is different from the model of McDonald’s.C. shows the reverse of globalization.D. has converged cultural differences.13. The two schools of thought____________.A. both propose that companies should tailor business approaches to individual culturesB. both advocate that different policies be set up in different countriesC. admit the existence of cultural diversity in business worldD. both A and B14. This article is supposed to be most useful for those____________.A. who are interested in researching the topic of cultural diversityB. who have connections to more than one type of cultureC. who want to travel abroadD. who want to run business on International Scale15. According to Fortune, successful international companies________________.A. earn 20 percent or more of their revenue overseasB. all have the quality of patienceC. will follow the overseas local culturesD. adopt the policy of internationalizationPassage FourMany thousands of years ago, there were no houses such as people live in today. In those ancient times, men sometimes made their homes in trees, using the leaves to keep off rain and sun. Their object in building their houses in trees is to be safe from their enemies and from wild beats. If people in those old times had been more civilized, they would have had stronger building materials than leaves and branches. In colder countries, the people of long ago used to live in caves. It was too cold and stormy to live in trees. Sometimes, across the opening of the cave they made a wall of stones, in order to keep out wild animals. As years went on and the human race progressed, men learned more about living in comfort and safety. They became more civilized and left woods and caves. They built houses of different materials such as mud, wood, or stones.During the last hundred years, many new building methods have been discovered. One of the most recent discoveries is to use steel as a building material. Nowadays, when it is necessary to make a very tall building, the frame of it is first built of steel, and then building is completed in concrete. But whatever building it may be, it should be light, airy, and comfortable. Human being cannot keep healthy without sunlight and fresh, clean air to breathe.16. In ancient times, the purpose in building houses is ______.A. to keep off rain and sunB. that the people were more civilizedC. that the weather is too cold and stormyD. to avoid being attacked by the enemies and wild animals17. In ancient times, people would live in caves, _______.A. because human race evolvedB. because it is too cold and rainingC. because there was a wall of stoneD. because human being hadn’t had stronger building18. Which statement is not true according to the passage?A. People became civilized and they left the forest.B. The modern building is made of steel and concreteC. In old days, trees were good places for people to be safe.D. The building made of steel is more airy than that made of stone19. All of the following can be used as building material except _______.A. leavesB. stoneC. steelD. mud20. Which of the following can serve as the title of the passage?A. Building and HealthB. (已提交)参考答案:C问题解析:Every one of us is a mother, father, son or daughter - and we all havedreams - big and small. Unfortunately, too many of us keep thesedreams to ourselves because we fear what others might say. My point inwriting this is to say it's OK to dream and dream big and talk about yourdreams so that others are inspired to dream big too. What a world wewould have if everyone did this! My dad was a dreamer. He told methat one day he was going to have a sailboat. We would go to theboat shows whenever they came to town and climb into them. Myfather would talk to the sales people and I would be busy pretending tosail the boat. It was fun. Then one day we went to the boat place andtook out a sailboat on the ocean, what a thrill! Soon afterwards hebought his first boat and named it LETSGO and we sailed and sailedbig bays and seas around New England. When Iwas older I got to bethe skipper because he not only told me his dream he showed it to meand let me taste the idea on my own. Now I was inspired to dream bigtoo. You see dreams can do wonders for you. When you believe in yourdreams, they take on a life of their own. Now you start dreaming upthings to do to make your inspiration a reality. More dreams, more.............inspiration, then more dreams and a few more. Then one morning youwake up and the dream has come true. Mydreams have taken me toso many beautiful places; I've been below the surface of the oceanwatching the beauty of coral and fish as I swim by. I've flown anairplane with pontoon floats from a lake in northern Maine and anotherdifferent plane on a flight over the Grand Canyon. I've also riddenunder my own wind blown sails. The pictures in my head are pricelessand better than any I've taken. Some of the best times I've had werelistening to older people talk about their dreams and what their dreamsdid for their lives. When I hear some of their dreams it inspires me to thinkand dream how I might do that too. I interviewed a man some yearsago who was 80-something years young. He was a sturdy man with thehands to match the story he told me. Hands still strong enough to crackthe shells of the walnuts he offered me and munched on. He hadoutlived his wife but still lived in their neat home with bookcases neartthe fireplace he no doubt built. I asked one question and I didn'move for hours. His story of leaving home to explore the world and learna new trade was fascinating to my young mind. But it was after hearinghis tale that I realized what he was really saying to me - not as anaspiring journalist but as a person. He told me he dreamed that hewould have a great life and he had one, so, I could dream abouthaving a great life and get one too. Just as my father had said to me.............earlier, here was another confirmation. I did just what they said to do,because I could do anything I wanted. Therefore, I say dream... dreambig dreams about your great life to come. I?heading out toward mynext one, how about you?11. Then we are frustrated that the kids aren't oldenough and we'll be more content when they are. After that we'refrustrated that we have teenagers to deal with. We always tell ourselvesthat our life will be complete when our spouse gets his or her acttogether. when we get a nice car, and are able to go on a nicevocation when we retire. The truth is, there's no better time than rightnow. If not now, when? Yur life will always be filled with challenges. It'sbest to admit this to ourselves and decide to be happy anyway. One ofmy favorite quotes comes from Alfred Souza. He said.or a long time ithad seemed to me that life was about tobegin-real life. But there wasalways some obstacle in the way, something to be gotten through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, a debt to be paid. Thenlife would begin. At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were mylife. This perspective has helped me to see that there is no way tohappiness. Happiness is the way. So treasure every moment that youhave and treasure it more because you share it with someone special, special enough to spend your time with? ans remember that time waitsfor no man. So stop waiting until you finish school, until you go back to.............school; until you lose ten pounds ,until you have husband and kids; untilyour kids leave the house; until you get a new car, until you retire.Happiness is a journey, not a destination. So, work like you don't needmoney, love like you've never been hurt before; Dance like no one'swatching.11. (已提交)参考答案: C问题解析:Every one of us is a mother, father, son or daughter - and we all have dreams - big and small. Unfortunately, too many of us keep thesedreams to ourselves because we fear what others might say. My point in writing this is to say it's OK to dream and dream big and talk about your dreams so that others are inspired to dream big too. What a world we would have if everyone did this! My dad was a dreamer. He told methat one day he was going to have a sailboat. We would go to theboat shows whenever they came to town and climb into them. Myfather would talk to the sales people and I would be busy pretending to sail the boat. It was fun. Then one day we went to the boat place and took out a sailboat on the ocean, what a thrill! Soon afterwards he bought his first boat and named it "LETSGO" and we sailed and sailedbig bays and seas around New England. When I was older I got to bethe skipper because he not only told me his dream he showed it to meand let me taste the idea on my own. Now I was inspired to dream big too. You see dreams can do wonders for you. When you believe in your dreams, they take on a life of their own. Now you start dreaming upthings to do to make your inspiration a reality. More dreams, moreinspiration, then more dreams and a few more. Then one morning youwake up and the dream has come true. My dreams have taken me toso many beautiful places; I've been below the surface of the oceanwatching the beauty of coral and fish as I swim by. He hadoutlived his wife but still lived in their neat home with bookcases nearthe fireplace he no doubt built. I asked one question and I didn ’ t move for hours. Just as my father had said to meearlier, here was another confirmation. I did just what they said to do, because I could do anything I wanted. Therefore, I say dream... dreambig dreams about your great life to come. I ? heading out toward my next one, how about you?11. (已提交)参考答案: A问题解析:We always believe that life will be better after we get married, have ababy, than another. He said. "for a long time ithad seemed to me that life was about to begin-real life. But there wasalways some obstacle in the way, something to be gotten through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, a debt to be paid. Thenlife would begin. At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were mylife." This perspective has helped me to see that there is no way tohappiness. Happiness is the way. So treasure every moment that youhave and treasure it more because you share it with someone special, special enough to spend your time with ⋯ ans remember that time waits for no man. So stop waiting until you finish school, until you go back toschool; until you lose ten pounds ,until you have husband and kids; untilyour kids leave the house; until you get a new car, until you retire.Happiness is a journey, not a destination. Now you start dreaming up things to do to make your inspiration a reality. More dreams, more. . .inspiration, then more dreams and a few more. Then one morning youwake up and the dream has come true. My dreams have taken me toso many beautiful places; I've been below the surface of the oceanwatching the beauty of coral and fish as I swim by. He hadoutlived his wife but still lived in their neat home with bookcases nearthe fireplace he no doubt built. I asked one question and I didn ’ tmove for hours. Just as my father had said to me........... . .earlier, here was another confirmation. So, work like you don't needmoney, love like you've never been hurt before; Dance like no one'swatching.11. If you telephone him early in the day, while he is shaving or having breakfast, the time of the call shows that the matter is very important and requires immediate attention. The same meaning is attached to telephone calls made after 11:00 pm. If someone receives a call during sleeping hours, he assumes it's a matter of life or death. The time chosen for the call communicates its importance. In social life, time plays a very important part. In the U.S.A. guests tend to feel they are not highly regarded if the invitation to a dinner party is extended only three or four days before the party date. But it is not true in all countries. In other areas of the world, it may be considered foolish to make an appointment too far in advance because plans which are made for a date more than a week away tend to be forgotten. The meaning of time differs in different parts of the world. Thus, misunderstandings arise between people from different cultures that treat time differently. Promptness is valued highly in American life, for example. If people are not prompt, they may be regarded as impolite or not fully responsible. In the U.S. no one would think of keeping a business associate waiting for an hour, it would be too impolite. A person, who is 5 minutes late, will say a few words of explanation, though perhaps he will not complete the sentence.81.(单选题) (1)、What is the main idea of this passage? ________A:It is not customary to telephone someone in the morning and in sleeping hours in the U.S.B:The role of time in social life over the world.C:If people are late, they may be regarded as impolite or not fully responsible in the U.S.D:Not every country treats the concept of time as the same.答题: A. He had to help them to do something in the fields. But he didn't like to live in the poor place. When he was sixteen, he got to the town and found work in a factory. Three years later he became tall and strong. So he was sent to Africa as a soldier. He stayed there for five years and got some money. Then he came back to England and bought a shop in a small town. No people in the town went to Africa except him. And he hoped they thought he was a famous man and that they could respect him. The children often asked him to tell them some stories and his life in Africa. One day a few children asked him to tell them something about the animals in Africa. He told them how he fought with the tigers and elephants. His stories surprised them all and some policemen and workers went to listen to him. It made him happier. Just a man who taught geography in a middle school passed there. He stopped to listen to him for a while and then said, "Could you. . . . .(bed and breakfast) is a Great British institution, In essence you get a room in somebody's house, and small B&Bs may only have one guest room, so you'll really feel like part of the family. Larger B&Bs may have four or five rooms and more facilities, but just as warm as a welcome. In country areas your B&B might be in a village or an isolated farm surrounded by fields. Prices reflect facilities: and usually run from around £12 to £20 per person. City B&Bs charge about £25 to £30 per person, although they're often cheaper as you go further out to the suburbs. Pubs & Inns As well as selling drinks and meals, Britain's pubs and inns sometimes offer B&B, particularly in country areas. They are studying the relationship between diet and health. At this time, over one hundred experiments are being done in this laboratory. In one of these experiments, the scientists are studying the relationship between the amount of food the mice eat and their health. The mice are in three groups. All three groups are receiving the same healthy diet. But the amount of food that each group is receiving is different. The first group is eating one cup of food each day, the second group is eating two cups, and the third group of mice is eating three cups. After three years, the healthiest group is the one that is only eating one cup of food each day. The mice in this group are thinner than normal mice. But they are more active. Most of the day, they are running, playing with one another, and using the equipment in their cages. Also, they are living longer. Mice usually live for two years. Most of the mice in this group are still alive after three years. The second group of mice is normal weight. They are healthy, too. They are active, but not as active as the thinner mice. But they are only living about two years, not the three years or more of the thinner mice. The last group of mice is receiving more food than the other two groups. Most of the day, these mice are eating or sleeping. They are not very active. These mice are living longer than the scientists thought - about a year and a half. But they aren't as healthy. They're sick more often than the other two groups.96.(判断题) The scientists in the laboratory are studying the relationship between the amount of food and diet.答题:对. 错. (已提交)参考答案:F....A. B. But computer injuries happen slowly. You probably know how to ride a bike safely. Now learn to use a computer safely. Yet, some people say that ours is an age where true heroes and heroines are hard to come by, where the very idea of heroism is something beyond us - an artifact of the past. Some maintain, that because the Cold War is over and because America is at peace, our age is essentially an unheroic one. Furthermore, the overall crime rate is down, poverty has been eased by a strong and growing economy, and advances continue to be made in medical science. Cultural icons are hard to define, but we know them when we see them. They are people who manage to go beyond celebrity (明星), who are legendary, who somehow mange to become mythic. But what makes some figures icons and others mere celebrities? That's hard to answer. In part, their lives have the quality of a story to tell. For instance, the beautiful young Diana Spencer who at 19 married a prince, renounced marriage and the throne, and died at the moment she found true love. Good looks certainly help. So does a special indefinable charm, with the help of the media. But nothing confirms an icon more than a tragic death - such as Martin Luther King, Jr., John F. Does he have ways or tools of learning that are different from those of others? The answer is “no”. It is not the tools a scientist uses but how he uses these tools that makes him a scientist. You will probably agree that knowing how to use a power is important to a carpenter. You will probably agree, too, that knowing how to investigate, how to discover information, is important to everyone. The scientist, however, goes one step further, he must be sure that he has a reasonable answer to his questions and that his answer can be confirmed by other persons. He also works to fit the answers he gets to many questions into a large set of ideas about how the world works. The scientist’s knowledge must be exact. There is no room for half right or right just half the time. He must be as nearly right as the conditions permit. What works under one set of conditions at one time must work under the same conditions at other times. If the conditions are different, any changes the scientist observes in a demonstration must be explained by the changes in the conditions. This is one reason that investigations are important in science. Albert Einstein, who developed the theory of relativity, arrived at this theory through mathematics. The accuracy of his mathematics was later tested through investigations, and Einstein’s ideas were shown to be correct. A scientist uses many tools for measurements. Then the measurements are used to make mathematical calculations that may test his investigations.131.(单选题) (1).What makes a scientist according to the passage? ________A.The tools he uses.B.The way he uses his tools.C.His ways of learning.D.The various tools he uses.答题: A. Some weather reports go back only one century, but some trees can show us an exact record of the weather even further back. It's clear that a tree would grow best in a climate with lots of sunlight and rainfall. It is also expected that little sunlight or rainfall would limit the growth of a tree. The change from a favorable (有利的) to an unfavorable climate can be reading the tree rings in tree trunk. To find out the weather of ten years ago, count the rings of a tree trunk from the outside to the inside. If the tenth ring is farJust last year, there were fierce disagreements over the Iraq war-which British Prime Minister Tony Blair supported despite French President Jacques Chirac speaking out against it. This discomfort is expressed in Blair and Chirac's body language at international meetings. While the French leader often greets German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder with a hug, Blair just receives a handshake. However, some political experts say the war in Iraq could in fact have helped ties. The history of divisions may well be because of the very different ways in which the two sides see the world. But this doesn't stop 12 million Britons taking holidays in France each year. However, only 3 million French come in the opposite direction. Surveys show that most French people feel closer to the Germans than they do to the British. And the research carried out in Britain has found that only athird of the population believes the French can be trusted. Perhaps this bad feeling comes because the British dislike France's close relationship with Germany, or because the French are not happy with Britain's close links with the US. Whatever the answer is, as both sides celebrate 100 years of "doubtful friendship", they are at least able to make jokes about each other. Here's one: What's the best thing about Britain's relationship with France? The English Channel.71.(单选题) (1)、For centuries, the relationship between Britain and France is______.A:friendlyB:impoliteC:brotherlyD:a mixture of love and hate答题: A. B. C. D. There are thousands and thousands of different kinds of plants and animals. However, the world's forests are getting smaller all the time. We are cutting down the trees because we need wood, and we need more farmland. Some people say that there will not be any forests like these in 20 or 30 years. What will happen if they disappear? If we cut down our forests, a lot of plants and animals will disappear from the world. In a lot of places the new farmland will soon look like the old deserts. Crops will not grow there. It will not rain very often, and the weather will get very hot. Perhaps the climate of the world will change. This will be dangerous for everyone in the world. At the time France was in a crisis. The government was badly run and people's lives were miserable. King Louis XIV tried tocontrol the national parliament and raise more taxes. But his effort failed. He ordered his troops to Versailles. The people thought that Louis intended to put down the Revolution by force. On July 14, 1789, they stormed and took the Bastille, where political prisoners were kept. Ever since that day, July 14 has been the French National Day. Louis tried to flee the country in 1792, to get support from Austria and Prussia. However, he was caught and put in prison. In September 1792, the monarchy was abolished. In the same year, Louis was executed. A few months later his wife, Marie, also had her head cut off. The Revolution of France had frightened the other kings of Europe. Armies from Austria and Prussia began to march against France. The French raised republican armies to defend the nation. The Revolution went through a period of terror. But computer injuries happen slowly. You probably know how to ride a bike safely. Now learn to use a computer safely. Your eyes Too much light can injure your eyes,so never sit too close to a computer screen. Your eyes should be at least 50cm from the screen. Remember to look away from it sometimes. This gives your eyes a rest. When you use a computer, the window should be on your left or your right. If it is behind you, the light will reflect on (反射) the screen. If the window is in front of you, the sun and the screen will both shine into your eyes. Your hands and wrists Hand and wrist injuries can happen because the hands and wrists are moved in the same way hundreds of times. If you use a keyboard for a long time, follow these three rules:1) Rest your wrists on some thing. 2) Keep your elbows (肘) at the same height as the keyboard. 3) Stop sometimes and exercise your hands, wrists and fingers in a different way. Your back Some people sit for many hours in front of a computer. If you sit in the wrong way,you can injure your back or your neck. So you should sit with your back straight. The top part of the screen should be in front of your eyes. Your forearms, wrists, hands and the upper part of your legs should all be parallel (平行) to the floor. If you are sitting for a long time, get up every 30 minutes and exercise your arms, legs and neck. Enjoy your computer, but use it safely.throne, and died at the moment she found true love. China has more cyclists than any other country in the world. Because the roads are so crowded with bicycles, it is very important for cycliststo remember the traffic rules and regulations. Before you ride your bicycle and get a number for it. This number will be on a plate on your bicycle. Also, the traffic authorities will want to check the bicycle to make sure that it is in good condition. Young children may not ride bicycles in the streets, because there is so much traffic that is dangerous. A cyclist must keep at least one hand on the handlebars at all times, and a bicycle may not carry more than one adult person. On which side of the road should you ride? On the right, of course! The intermediate goals build on the foundation of the short-term goals. They might deal with just one term of school or the entire school year, or they could even extend for several years. And as your list of completion dates grow, your motivation and desire will increase. Long-term goals may be related to our dreams of the future. They might cover five years or more. Each passage is followed by some questions and unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the best one. (The underlined sentences are to be translated.) Passage one1It is believed that only 1 percent of the world‟s population refuses to eat all types of meat and only one-tenth of the 1 percent are total vegans, avoiding all animal products. Yet many cultures restrict what meats may be eaten, mostly according to religious laws. The loyalty to each religion sees little reason to ask why a meat is prohibited. In fact, it is considered rude for humans to question the directives of God or church.."2Some researchers have studied how animals are classified as “different” or “unnatural” due to their physical characteristics. The Jewish prohibition against pork, for example, seems to be because pigs do not chew their cud. While others have focused on the use of the term unclean in relation to pork prohibitions, claiming that pork eating is unhealthful.3Marvin Harris has proposed a theory for why certain meats are avoided. He suggests that if an animal is much more valuable alive than dead, consumption will be prohibited. He reviews the examples of beef in India, pork in the Middle East, and horsemeat in Europe of the Middle Ages.4 In India, 80 percent of the population lives in rural areas, where cattle are the primary power source. In addition, cattle provide dung that is dried to produce a clean, slow-burning cooking fuel. Cows also provide milk for the dairy products. Even dead cows serve a purpose in India, providing the very poor with the skins to make leather products to survive financially.5Records show that pork was a part of the foods in the ancient Middle East. However, by about 1900 B.C.E., pigs had become unpopular sources of meat. This occurs with the growth of the population in the region. Though pigs are efficient producers of meat, they compete with humans for food resources. In addition, they do not live healthy in hot, dry climates. Cows, goats, and sheep, on the other hand, are grass-eating animals that chew their cud a second time. They live on the plants unavailable to human digestion. There was a broad dislike to pigs by many Middle Easterners, which perhaps explains why the only clearly prohibited animal meat in Islam is pork.6Eating of horsemeat was prohibited by Christianity at one time. Horse consumption was frequent in the prehistoric Europe but diminished as the region became more forested. Though an uncommon meat, it was still enjoyed when available. Prohibitions against eating horse began with the use of horse by the soldiers to fight on horseback. During the 8th century, when European Christian strongholds came under attack from Moslem soldiers on horseback, Gregory III recognized the need for the horses in the defense of the church. He prohibited consumption of horsemeat as “unclean”. However, horse consumption never disappeared entirely, especially during periods when other meats were limited. And gradually, religious restrictions were eased. By the 19th century, horsemeat had regained favor, especially in France and Belgium, where it is a fine dish today. Despite the early need for horsepower, the prohibition was not continuous over time because it was against common food traditions.1. Marvin Harris‟s theory about the prohibitions of meat is that __C___.A. if the animal is grass-eating, eating will be prohibited.B. if the meat of an animal is more expensive, eating will be avoided.C. if the animal is more useful, eating will be prohibited.D. if the animal is not clean, eating will be unhealthy.2. The following reasons explain why cows are treated to be sacred in India EXCEPT___B___.A. they are unhealthy.B. they are the basic power source.C. the dried dung can produce cooking coal.D. they can produce milk for diary products.3. All of the following EXCEPT___A___ are the reasons why pigs were disliked by the Middle Easterners.A. They are efficient meat producers.B. They eat the same food as people.C. They can‟t bear the climate there.D. They don‟t chew their cud.4. What made Gregory III declare the horsemeat prohibition? AA. The horses were needed for protecting the church.B. The eating horsemeat was not cleanC. Horsemeat was still liked by people.D. The horsemeat prohibition was against common food traditions.5. From the passage, it can be inferred that______A_______.A. there is only one theory about the meat prohibitionB. some people avoid meatC. with time going by, meat prohibitions have been changing.D. there is no reason to prohibit meat eatingPassage Two1Some people are just doomed to be failures. That's the way some adults look at troubled kids. Maybe you've heard the saying, "A bird with a broken wing will never fly as high." Ware was made to feel this way almost every day in school. By high school, Ware was the most well-known troublemaker in his town. Teachers would complain when they saw his name posted on their classroom lists for the next semester. He wasn't very talkative, didn't answer questions and got into lots of fights. He had flunked almost every class by the time he entered his senior year, yet was being passed on each year to a higher grade level. Teachers didn't want to have him again the following year. Ware was moving on, but definitely not moving up.2Ware was one of 405 students who signed up for ACE training, a program designed to have students become more involved in their communities. At the start of the training, Ware was standing outside the circle of students, against the back wall, with that "go ahead, impress me" look on his face. He didn't readily join the discussion groups. But slowly, the interactive games drew him in. The ice really melted when the groups started building a list of positive and negative things that had occurred at school that year. Ware had some definite thoughts on those situations. The other students in Ware's group welcomed his comments. The next day, WARE was very active in all the sessions. By the end of the training, he had joined the Homeless Project team. He knew something about poverty, hunger and hopelessness. The other students on the team were impressed with his passionate concern and ideas. They elected Ware chairman of the team. The student council president would be taking his instruction from Ware.3When Ware showed up at school on Monday morning, he arrived to afirestorm. A group of teachers were protesting to the school principal about his being elected chairman. The very first communitywide service project was to be a food drive. These teachers couldn't believe that the principal would allow this crucial beginning to a three-year action plan to stay in the incapable hands of Ware. They reminded the principal, "He has an arrest record as long as your arm. He'll probably steal half the food." Mr. Coggeshall reminded them that the purpose of the program was to uncover any positive passion that a student had and strengthen its practice until true change can take place.4Two weeks later, Ware and his friends led a group of 70 students in a drive to collect food. They collected a school record 2,854 cans of food in just two hours. The local newspaper covered the event with a full-page article the next day. That newspaper story was posted on the main bulletin board at school, where everyone could see it. Ware's picture was up there for doing something great, for leading a record-setting food drive. Every day he was reminded about what he did. He was being acknowledged as leadership material. Ware started showing up at school every day and answered questions from teachers for the first time. Ware reminds us that a bird with a broken wing only needs mending. But once it has healed, it can fly higher than the rest.6. The teachers feel ___B__ when seeing Ware‟s name on the classroom list for the next term?A. happyB. shockedC. uncomfortableD. excited7. The phrase "go ahead, impress me" means Ware has a(n) __B___ attitude to the training.A. surprisedB. indifferentC. activeD. eager8. Why was Ware elected chairman of the team? AA.Ware‟s passionate concern and ideas impress other students.B. He knew something about poverty, hunger and hopelessness.C. Ware had some definite thoughts on those situationsD. The other students are not willing to be elected.9. In paragraph 3, “firestorm” refers to __B___.A. a fire of great sizeB. criticism from the teachersC. praise from the principalD. support from the students10. Ware was being acknowledged as leadership material mainly because __A___A. the success of leading a food drive.B. Ware was elected chairman of the team.C. Ware answered questions from teachers.D. The local newspaper reported the event.Passage Three1. They are the generation of women in Great Britain who grew up expecting to have it all. No longer forced to choose between children and career, they were set to by doing both —while holding down a perfect relationship and keeping a spotlesshome in their spare time. But modern woman has taken a reality check. The average 29-year-old now hankers for a return to the lifestyle of a 1950s housewife. A survey has shown that the daughters of the generation of feminists want nothing more than a happy marriage and domestic bliss in the countryside.2. Research into the attitudes of 1,500 women with an average age of 29 found that 61 percent believe the women who juggle top jobs with motherhood and social lives are “unhelpful” and “irritating”. More than two-thirds agree that the man should be the main provider in a family, while 70 percent do not want to work as hard as their mother‟s ge neration. On average, the women questioned want to settle down with their partner by 30 and have their first child a year later. So, after decades of soaring divorce rates and a rise in births outside marriage, it appears the next generation of mothers is returning to more traditional social values. As the survey showed, nine out of ten young women would rather be married when they have children, while 75 percent believe that modern couples do not make enough effort to stay together. A quarter of those questioned intend to give up work and be a full-time mother when they start a family, with just one percent saying their career will remain a “top priority” once they have children.3Some experts have tried to explain these. Vicki Shotbolt, deputy chief exec utive of the National Family and Parenting Institute, said: “The mothers of these women may have tried to juggle motherhood and careers, and it may have been the children who feel they lost out… I think women really are coming of age now, and are accepting that it is almost i mpossible to have it all.”4.The same sentiment is expressed by Margi Conklin, editor of New Woman, said: “there has been a fundamental shift in young women‟s attitudes towards life and work. They‟ve watched their own mothers trying and then failing to …have it all‟ and have decided they don‟t want it all. They don‟t want to work crazy hours while their children are put into nurseries and their relationships disintegrate under the strain.” Young women today are increasingly putting their personal happiness before a big salary or high-powered career. Above everything else, they crave a work-life balance where they can enjoy a fulfilling relationship, raise happy children and have a job that interests them but doesn‟t overwhelm them. The age of the …superwoman‟, who wants to be the world‟s best mother, wife and boss, is dead.11. The survey mentioned in the text shows that ___A____.A. Women have to be forced to choose between children and career.B. modern women want a happy marriage and domestic happiness.C. Women take their career seriously once they have childrenD. Both husband and wife should be the providers in the family.12. The word “irritating” (in paragraph 2) can be replaced by ___B___.A. pleasantB. unpleasantC. healthyD. unhealthy13. The word “superwoman” (in the last paragraph) imply __B___A. a woman who is with more than human powersB. woman who has a well-paid job and a happy family.C. a woman who gives up personal happiness for job.D. none of the above.14. The author support her idea with ___C____.A. charts and picturesB. maps and figuresC. statistics and examplesD. none of the above15. The main idea of the passage is ___C____.A. the true stories of successful womenB. traditional social values of womenC. w omen‟s attitude to the change of motherhoodD. the divorce rates and a rise in births outside marriagePART III Cloze (10%)Directions: There are 10 blanks in the following passage. That is why we must take care of our forests.76.(判断题) (1)、The passage mainly tells us about the importance of taking care of plants.81.(单选题) (1)、What is the main idea of this passage? ________A:It is not customary to telephone someone in the morning and in sleeping hours in the U.S.B:The role of time in social life over the world.C:If people are late, they may be regarded as impolite or not fully responsible in the U.S.D:Not every country treats the concept of time as the same.答题: A.
