船用柴油机是一种在船上使用的柴油机。
其工作原理如下：一定量的新鲜空气被吸入或泵入气缸并被运动的活塞压缩至很高的压力。
空气被压缩时，温度升高，便点燃喷入气缸的油雾。
燃油的燃烧增加了缸内空气的热量，使空气膨胀并迫使发动机活塞对曲轴做功，随时之驱动螺旋桨。
两次喷油期限间的运转过程叫一个工作循环。
它由一些程序固定的过程组成。
这个循环可在二个行程或四个行程内完成。
四冲程柴油机的工作循环需四个独立的活塞行程，即吸气、压缩、膨胀和排气。
如果我们把吸气和排气行程与压缩和膨胀行程结合起来，四冲程柴油机就变成了二冲程柴油机。
二冲程循环从活塞离开其行程底部，即下止点（BDC）向下运行开始，气侧面的进气口即扫气口是打开的[图（a）]，排气口也是打开的。
经压缩的新鲜空气充入气缸，通过排气口将上一行程的残余废气吹出。
当活塞上行至其行程的1/5时，关闭进、排气口，随后空气在活塞早行中被压缩[图（b）]。
当活塞上行到行程底部，即上止点（TDC）时空气的压力和温度都上升到很高的数值。
此时喷油器把很细的油雾喷入炽热的空气中，燃烧开始，在气气体中产生更高的压力。
随着高压气体的膨胀，活塞被推动下行[图（c）]直到穹打开排气口，燃烧过的气体开始排出[图（d）]，活塞继续下行直到它打开进气口，另一个循环开始。
在二冲程柴油机中，曲轴转一击产生一具动力行程，即做功行程；而在四冲程柴油机中，曲轴转两周才产生一个动力行程。
这就是为什么从理论上说二冲程柴油机能产生相同尺寸的四冲程柴油机的两倍功率。
然而，扫气不充分和其他损失使这一优势降到大约1.8倍。
在船上，每种柴油机都有它的应用。
低速（即90~120r/min）主推进柴油机以二冲程工作。
在此低速时，机桨间不需减速箱。

Bilge tank—污水舱Ballast tank—压载舱Slop tank—污油舱Reserve tank—备用舱Fresh water tank—淡水舱Sewage tank—粪便柜International convention for the prevention of pollution from ships, 1973 as modified by the Protocol of 1978relating thereto(简称MARPOL 73/78)Oil Record BookAnnex I—Regulation 20(1)Every oil tanker of 150 tons gross tonnage andabove and every ship of 400 tons gross tonnage and above other than an oil tanker shall be provided with an Oil Record Book Part I (Machinery Space Operations). Every oil tanker of 150 tons gross tonnage and above shall also be provided with an Oil Record Book Part II (Cargo/Ballast Operations). The Oil Record Book(s), Whether as a part of the ship’s official log book or otherwise, shall be in the Form(s) specified in Appendix III to this Annex.(2)The Oil Record Book shall be completed on eachoccasion, on a tank to tank basis if appropriate, whenever any of the following operations take place in the ship:(a)for machinery space operations (all ships):(i)ballasting or cleaning of oil fuel tanks;(ii)discharge of dirty ballast or cleaning water from tanks referred to under (i) of thesub-paragraph;(iii)disposal of oily residues (sludge);(iv)discharge overboard or disposal otherwise ofbilge water which has accumulated inmachinery spaces.(b) for cargo/ballast operations (oil tankers):(i) loading of oil cargo;(ii) internal transfer of oil cargo during voyage;(iii) unloading of oil cargo;(iv) ballasting of cargo tanks and dedicated clean ballast tanks;(v) cleaning of cargo tank;(vi) discharge of ballast except from segregated ballast tanks;(vii) discharge of water from slop tanks;(viii) closing of all applicable valves or similar devices after slop tank discharge operations;(ix) closing of valves necessary for isolation of dedicated clean ballast tanks from cargo and stripping lines after slop tank discharge operations;(x) disposal of residues.(3)In the event of such discharge of oil or oilymixture as is referred to in Regulation 11 of this Annex or in the event of accidental or other exceptional discharge of oil not excepted by that Regulation, a statement shall be made in the Oil Record Book of the circumstances of, and the reasons for, the discharge.(4)Each operation described in paragraph (2) of thisRegulation shall be fully recorded without delay in the Oil Record Book so that all the entries in the book appropriate to that operation are completed.Each completed operation shall be signed by the officer or officers in charge of the operations concerned and each completed page shall be in signed by the master of the ship. The entries in the Oil Record Book shall be in an official language of the State whose flag the ship is entitled to fly, and, for ships holding an International Oil Pollution Prevention Certificate, in English or French. The entries in an official national language of the State whose flag the ship is entitled to fly shall prevail in case of a dispute or discrepancy.(5)The Oil Record Book shall be kept in such a placeas to be readily available for inspection at allreasonable times and, except in the case of unmanned ships under tow, shall be kept on board the ship. It shall be preserved for a period of three years after the last entry has been made.(6)The competent authority of the Government of aParty to the Convention may inspect the Oil Record Book on board any ship to which this Annex applies while the ship is in its port or offshore terminals and may make a copy of any entry in that book and may require the Master of the ship to certify that the copy is a true copy of such entry. Any copy so made which has been certified by the Master of the ship as a true copy of an entry in the ship’s Oil Record Book shall be made admissible in any judicial proceedings as evidence of the facts stated in the entry. What kind of ships are provided with Part I
and Part II and relevant operations
Oil Record Book Part I shall be provided to every oil tanker of 150 tons gross tonnage and above and every ship of 400 tons gross tonnage and above, other than oil tanker, to record relevant machinery space operations. For oil tankers, Oil Record Book Part II shall also be provided to record relevant cargo/ballast operations.
