WELCOME UNIT 课时作业Ⅰ.阅读理解AMy first day in high school will never be forgotten. When I got to the classroom in the morning, I saw that Mr Brown had already put our names on our tables. After walking a few steps, I saw my name on the table right in the middle of the classroom. Walking up to my table, my heart sang. “It would be great to sit there. I could see everything easily,” I thought to myself.A while later, the other students entered one by one and took their own seats. And then Mr Brown started talking. He showed us his classroom rules and tried to explain them. All of a sudden, a student called Tony started singing loudly. All the while he moved his body to the music. His deskmate Josh couldn't understand why he was doing these things. Then he stood up and talked to Mr Brown, “I don't want to sit with this strange guy.Can I swap seats with someone else in this room, please?”Mr Brown didn't answer his question directly. He stopped what he was doing and turned on his computer. Then he showed us some pictures about autistic (患自闭症的) kids.He explained that autistic kids have little selfcontrol. They seem to do things that are beyond everyone else's understanding. However, they can do many other great things, in the field of art or music for example. Then he told us that Tony was not good at maths, but loved songs.“He can sing thousands of songs. What's more surprising is that he can remember all the words without any mistakes.”In the end, Mr Brown added that although autistic kids were different, they should be loved.Since the first day in high school, I became Mr Brown's admirer.I was pretty sure Mr Brown would get all of us on the right track.语篇解读:本文是一篇记叙文。

Most of the meals can serve two people and are under $10, so not only is it affordable but practical as well. The food especially appeals to health-conscious eaters because each dish is very healthy, made with limited fat and oil and served straight off the grill(烤肉架).The main dish that the restaurant is popular for is its kabobs, which are different styles of grilled meat. One delicious and extremely healthy dish is the Joojeh Kabob, which is made of grilled chicken pieces served with either rice or bread. Another great kabob is the Chelo Kabob, a kabob consisting of grilled beef.Although the restaurant is small, the atmosphere and the food is delicious. It is a place that should not be overlooked.36.When first entering the restaurant, one can find that it________.A.is splendidly decoratedB.has pleasant smells of kabobsC.is crowded with dining tablesD.looks like a common restaurant37.What activity is also mentioned apart from dining in the restaurant?A.Watching news events on TV.B.Drinking a kind of black coffee.C.Reading local English newspapers.D.Discussing world topics in low voices.38.The food of the restaurant ________.A.is served in small amountsB.is rather expensiveC.is rich in varietyD.is very healthy39.What is the dish Joojeh Kabob mainly made of?A.Rice. Professional Association of Teachers in Southport, northwest of England, one person suggested properly trained dogs be able to keep order in primary schools. They can round up lost children and protect those who experience unfortunate “accidents”.Wendy Dyble,a Shetland Islands woman who teaches children up to age seven, made it clear to her fellow friends that she was not “barking mad”.They obviously believed her, supporting her idea by 16 votes to 13,with a total of 63 abstentions (弃权).She said big dogs could help round up children, keep them in line, lick up the milk they spill on the floor and provide the extra eyes that a teacher needs to keep order.“A big dog would also be helpful in breaking up fights and looking for lost property, like gym shoes or dolls,” Dyble said at the conference.“The dog will also be useful in sniffing out smells that children do not own up to,” she added.“It would be nice for the teacher not to have to go round sniffing each child to find the culprit (犯错的人).”The idea was greeted by the Dog Defense League but less so by bigger teaching unions.A spokesman for Education Secretary David Blunkett, who is blind, said hisguide dog was always popular with pupils when he visited schools. The Professional Association of Teachers, with around 35,000 members,is the smallest teaching union in Britain. It has an honour for occasional strange ideas.Earlier th is week, its annual conference here suggested stopping exams because they lead to stress and introducing selection at the age of 12 based on physical coordination and manual skill in It gives a voice to emerging public consciousness about the state of our planet. The founder is Gaylord Nelson. What moved Gaylord Nelson to action was the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill (溢出) in Southern California, the largest oil spill in the United States at that time. The spill proved to be an environmental nightmare as it had a strong impact on marine life, killing an estimated 3,500 seabirds, as well as marine animals such as dolphins, elephant seals and sea lions. Inspired by the student antiwar movement at that period of time, Nelson found it was a right time to channel the energy of the students towards a fight for environmental protection. He decided that it was time to educate the Americans on the need to protect the environment. Thus, Earth Day was born in 1970, and public environmental consciousness took centre stage. On 22nd April 1970, millions of Americans took to the streets to demonstrate for a healthy, sustainable environment and thousands of students marched in protest at the terrible situation of the environment. Businesses were forced to follow environmental standards if they wanted to continue their operations. The year 1990 saw Earth Day reach out to many more countries around the world. It helped pave the way for the 1992 United Nations Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, bringing together many nations, for a joint effort towards protecting the environment. In 2009, the United Nations decided to officially set April 22 as Earth Day. For his role as the founder of Earth Day, Gaylord Nelson was awarded the Presidential Medalof Freedom (1995), the highest honour given to civilians in the United States. We honour the man, as the fight for a cleaner environment continues.4.What can we learn about Earth Day?A.It was founded at the end of 1970s.B.It was first celebrated in Rio de Janeiro.C.People will march on the streets on this day.D.It arouses public environmental awareness.5.What did Gaylord Nelson do to make Earth Day possible?A.He reduced the loss of the oil spill.B.He participated in an antiwar movement.C.He set environmental standards for businesses.D.He involved more people in environmental issues.6.What is the third paragraph mainly about?A.The focus of Earth Day.B.The development of Earth Day.C.The world's concern for the environment.D.The joint efforts of different countries.7.Which of the following best describes Gaylord Nelson?A.Intelligent. as good as other people, but I don’t think I’m always not good. When I find what I’ve done or written is okay,I’ll remain pleased with myself for quite a few days, and if I receive praise for it,I’ll even become so excited as to add a few words to reward myself.True,I’m not modest at all.People may call me conceited (自负的).But I think otherwise.I appreciate other people.I appreciate anything good.Isn’t it unfair to forget appreciating myself while appreciating others? We Chinese generally tend to be modest, and w e take pride in being so.For example,a Chinese man will call his own wife zhuojing, meaning“my humble wife”,and his own writings zhuozuo, meaning“my poor writings”.But if you call his wife a “rustic (乡村的) woman” or his writings“trash”,he would,I’m sure, declare he would make a clean break with you angrily. As a matter of fact, there is probably no difference at all between what is said by him and you.I don’t think it’s wrong of you to freely praise yourself if you’re really worthy of praise. As we know, there is an old Chinese saying disparaging (蔑视) a melon seller, named Lao Wang, who keeps praising his own goods.Well, why can’t he praise his melons if they are really sweet and juicy?Lao Wang sells melons for a living. How could he carry on business if he,by imitating the affectations (装模作样) of us intellectuals, were to show false modesty about his melons? He would sure enough die of starvation.Selfappreciation is therefore a key to professional dedication and enjoyment of work.Needless to say,the same is true of those who make a living with their pen.One will lose confidence in writing when he stops admiring his own essays.1.We know from the first three paragraphs that the author________.A.is modest in some wayB.is pleased to be a good writerC.is too conceitedD.thinks it unfair to appreciate others2.What do we know about the author’s attitude towards Chinese modesty according to Paragraph 4?A.Supportive. D.Careless.3.The author mentions the example of Lao Wang to prove that______.A.Lao Wang is very proud of himselfB.melon sellers should praise their goodsC.reasonable selfappreciation is goodD.writers should learn from Lao Wang4.The purpose of the passage is to encourage reade rs to be________.A.modest B.considerateC.respectful D.confident课时作业三十三Ⅰ.单项填空1.B 本题考查近义词辨析。

are born with a sense of fairness that most other animals seem not to share, but it’s not been cle ar exactly when this concept starts to develop.Dr.Alva Zhao and her colleagues conducted a series of tests to measure just how much children care about equality at different ages.In three different versions of a game, children were asked to choose between two ways of sharing a number of sweets with themselves and an unfamiliar partner. They could choose, for example, between one for me and one for you,or just having one for themselves. At the age of three,ch ildren were “almost completely selfish”,says Zhao. They refused to give sweets away even if it made no difference to themselves. But by the age of eight, children generally preferred the fair option, sharing a prize equally rather than keeping it all to themselves.Several ot her factors influenced how fair the children were. The team found that children without brothers or sisters were 28% more likely to share than children with brothers or sisters. On the other hand, the youngest children in a family were 17% less willing to share than children who had only younger brother or sister. In addition,if children knew that their partner was from the same playgroup or school, they were more concerned about being fair. This suggests that being nice to people you know is something that develops a sense of equality.1.The main idea child in a family tends to be less generous.4.We can learn that children care more about equality while with________.A.unknown people B.nice peopleC.familiar people D.fair people(2009年宜昌第一次调研,A) The United Nations says more than 900 million people worldwide do not have enough to eat.Officials say 100 million more could go hungry this year because of the food and financial crises. To deal with the situation, the UN World Food Program has started a project to help small farmers. These farmers are mainly women. Many cannot produce enou gh food even to feed and support their own families. The new effort is called Purchase for Progress,or P4P.It aims to connect local farmers with dependable markets. That way, they could get a chance to sell their surplus (剩余) at competitive prices.P4P will be tested in as many as 21 countries during the next five years. The biggest contributor to the project is Bill Gates, through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.Another donor (捐款者) is the Howard Buffett Foundation, led by a son of the American investor Warren Buffett. The government of Belgium is also supporting the project in a former colony (殖民地),now the Democratic Republic of Congo.Together these donors have provided more than 76 million dollars for projects in Africa and Central America.Purchase for Progress will work with United Nations agencies, governments and nongovernmental organiz You simply cannot go somewhere if you don't know where you want to go.With goals we create the future in advance. With goals we actually create our fate. We all have goals whether we know it or not. Realize that no matter what your goals are, they are affecting your life every day you live it.We need goals to inspire us. With strong and inspiring goals, we are driven to grow and expand and develop ourselves towards what we want from and for our lives. Compelling (强烈的) goals have the power to move us. Done properly and specifically, goals transform our lives. A study was done in 1953 at Yale University where they interviewed the graduating class just before they left school. They were asked among other things, how many of them had a clearly defined set of goals with a written plan for its attainment. Only 3% had a clear plan for their lives with a specific set of goals. In 1973,20 years later, they went back to interview the surviving class members of 1953 and they found that the 3% that had a set of written down goals seemed more happy, more well adjusted and more excited about their lives.Pursuing things in life is important for it has the power to move us,but more importantly we need to realize that at the end of our lives it's not the things we accumulated that will matter. What will matter is who we became as a person. Realize that we are not really after any “thing” in life but rather the way we think it will make us feel. When it comes to setting goals you should know that purpose is stronger than outcome. Purpose is a reason for attaining something and a reason is a motive for action, which is also known as motivation. The power of goals is that it directs our focus. Every great success will testify to the power of focus. We get whatever we focus on.Set your goals,r egardless of previous “failures”. Start afresh and do it properly. Come from a place of faith and believe and watch your life soar to greater heights of happiness and fulfilment. Above all, enjoy life for it is a gift and live it with passion. It's all out there. The only thing that is required of you is to go and get it and realize that step one is to have a strong enough goal.36. What's the text mainly about?A.How to set personal goals.B.The importance of setting personal goals.C.Personal goals affect people's character.D.Personal goals can be big or small.37. We can learn from Paragraph 3 that ________.A.graduates from Yale University have higher goalsB.Yale University produces more excellent graduatesC.goals can make us earn more moneyD.goals can inspire us to success38. Which of the following is TRUE of purpose and outcome?A.Purpose won't decide our success.B.Outcome urges us to pursue our success.C.Purpose is more important than outcome.D.Outcome is the very thing everyone pursues.39. longer, according to research published today. The research also shows that the difference in life expectancy (预期寿命) between rich and poor becomes smalleramong those who live in an environment with parks and trees.Richard Mitchell, from Glasgow University, and his colleagues, found that the gap between the number of deaths of people on high incomes and the number of deaths of those on low incomes in green areas was half that compared with figures relating to built-up areas.Green spaces, classified by the researchers as “open, undeveloped land with natural vegetation”,encouraged people to walk and be more active.Exercise in these settings could have greater benefits than exercise elsewhere, the researchers said. The benefits potentially go beyond exercise.Studies have shown that being around green spaces can reduce blood pressure and stress levels, and possibly help patients recover faster.A number of researchers have looked at the effects of greenery on our well-being.But few studies had looked at whether living in green areas reduced health inequalities, the Glasgow team said.Using information from a land-use database of 2001,the researchers divided the pre-retirement population of England into four groups according to income level, and five groups according to access to green space. They then looked at death rate for 2001~2005.They found that the inequality in death rate from all causes relating to lack of money was less in those populations in the greenest areas compared with the figures for people living in more built-up places. They found an even stronger relationship when it came to deaths from certain diseases such as heart conditions and stroke (中风).There was no difference, however,in deaths from lung cancer. The researchers said that changing the physical environment was an easier way to fight against poor health than using media campaigns or giving out information on health.“The result of the study is clear:Environments that promote good health might be very important in the fight to reduce health inequalities.”1.The underlined word “that” in Paragraph 2 refers to________.A.the gap B.the number of deathsC.the income D.the living area2.What was the special point of the Glasgow team’s research?A.They offered a scientific definition of “green spaces”.B.They encouraged people to exercise in green areas.C.They studied the effects of greenery on people’s health.D.They focused on the influence of greenery on health inequalities.3.What advice would the researchers probably give according to the last paragraph?A.More health information should be given to the public.B.People should take more exercise every day.C.More trees and grass should be planted in cities.D.People should help to fight against health problems.4.What is the main idea of the passage?A.People should live in green areas.B.Green spaces promote good health.C.Income influences health less than environment.D.Exercise in green areas benefits people a lot.课时作业(二十三)Ⅰ.单项填空1.A
