It is often realized that women held a high place in southern 11 in the 10th and 11th centuries. As a wife, the woman was protected by the setting up of a dowry or decimum. Admittedly, the purpose of this was to protect her against 12 , but in reality its function in the social and family life of the time was much more important. The decimum was the wife's right to receive a tenth of all her husband's property. The wife had the right to withhold consent 13 the husband would make. And more than just a right: the documents show that she enjoyed real 14 , equal to that of her husband. In no case do the documents indicate any degree of difference in the 15 of husband and wife.
The wife shared in the management of her husband's 16 but the opposite was not always true. Women seemed perfectly prepared to defend their own inheritance against husbands who tried to 17 , and on occasion they showed a fine fighting spirit. 18 is that of Maria Vivas, a Catalan woman of Barcelona. Having agreed with her husband Miro to sell a field she had inherited, for the needs of the household, she 19 . None being offered, she succeeded in dragging her husband to the scribe to have a contract duly drawn up assigning her a piece of land from Miro's personal inheritance. The unfortunate husband was obliged to agree, as the contract says, "for the sake of peace." Either through dowry or through being hot-tempered, the Catalan wife knew how to win herself 20 of the family, a powerful economic position.

Postage stamps are amongst the commonest of everyday objects, and most people spare an interested or even critical glance at any that seems out of the ordinary. Nearly all of us do, in fact, come across unusual stamps quite often. Perhaps they may arrive on letters from abroad, or come to light on old correspondence or in old collections; or perhaps we may buy them while traveling abroad, or even now that every postal organization is so lavish with special issues, from our own post office counter.
Stamp collecting has long been recognized as having an educational value. There is every reason to encourage young people to take an interest in them, thereby adding to their knowledge of geography and history, and dozens of guides have been written, giving advice on forming, arranging and understanding a collection.
Many people, however, go on collecting all their lives, and may do so for a variety of reasons. First there is the natural instinct for acquisition and completeness; second there may be a wish to link stamps with some other interest like travel or animals or buildings; third there is perhaps an urge to do research into methods of print or postal history; and fourth there may be a desire for financial gain.
If we are to regard the postage stamp as an art form, we must first understand its purpose and the methods used in its production. We can also understand how design and methods of production have mutually influenced one another and how outside influences, such as publicity and philately, have gradually overwhelmed the straightforward basic requirements. It shows, too, how economic and social and, above all, political changes have played their part, so that, correctly interpreted, the postage stamp in which millions of people, young and old, find pleasure, knowledge and even profit, has always been a faithful mirror of the times.
21.Young people are encouraged to take an interest in stamp collecting because __________.
A.they may make a lot of profit by selling the stamps later
B.they may be praised by their parents
C.they have to study stamps in order to pass the examination
D.it may broaden their knowledge of geography and history

Since the early 1930s, Swiss banks had prided themselves on their system of banking secrecy and numbered accounts. Over the years, they had
successfully withstood every challenge to this system by their own government who, in turn, had been frequently urged by foreign governments to reveal information about the financial affairs of certain account holders. The result of this policy of secrecy was that a kind of mystique had grown up around Swiss banking. There was a widely-held belief that Switzerland was irresistible to wealthy foreigners, mainly because of its numbered accounts and bankers' reluctance to ask awkward questions of depositors. Contributing to the mystique was the view, carefully propagated by the banks themselves, that if this secrecy was ever given up, foreigners would fall over themselves in the rush to withdraw money, and the Swiss banking system would virtually collapse overnight.
To many, therefore, it came like a bolt out of the blue, when, in 1977, the Swiss banks announced they had signed a pact with the Swiss National Bank (the Central Bank). The aim of the agreement was to prevent the improper use of the country's bank secrecy laws, and its effect was to curb severely the system of secrecy.
The rules which the banks had agreed to observe made the opening of numbered accounts subject to much closer scrutiny than before. The banks would be required, if necessary, to identify the origin of foreign funds going into numbered and other accounts. The idea was to stop such accounts being used for dubious purposes. Also, they agreed not to accept funds resulting from tax evasion or from crime.
The pact represented essentially a tightening up of banking rules. Although the banks agreed to end relations with clients whose identities were unclear or who were performing improper acts, they were still not obliged to inform on a client to anyone, including the Swiss government. To some extent, therefore, the principle of secrecy had been maintained.
