职称英语完型填空真题及答案(理工类A级)

职称英语完型填空真题及答案(理工类A级)2012年职称英语完型填空真题及答案(理工类A级)Solar Power without Solar CellsA dramatic and surprising magnetic effect of light discovered by University of Michigan1 researchers could lead to solar power without traditional semiconductor-based solar cells. The researchers found a way to make an “optical 1 ,” said Stephen Rand, a professor in the departments of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Physics and Applied Physics.Light has electric and magnetic components. Until now, scientists thought the 2 of the magnetic field were so weak that they could be ignored. What Rand and his colleagues found is that at the right intensity, when light is traveling through a material that does not conduct electricity, the light field can generate magnetic effects that are 100 million times stronger than 3 expected. 4 these circumstances, the magnetic effects develop strength equivalent to a strong electric effect.“This could lead to a new kind of solar cell without semicon ductors and without absorption to produce charge separation,” Rand said. “In solar cells, the 5 goes into amaterial, gets absorbed and creates heat. Here, we expect to have a very low heat load2. Instead of the light being absorbed, energy is stored in the magnetic moment3. Intense magnetization can be induced by intense light and then it is ultimately capable of providing a capacitive power 6.”What makes this possible is a previously undetected brand of “optical rectification4,” says William Fisher, a doc toral student5 in applied physics. In traditional optical rectification, light’s electric field causes a charge separation, or a pulling 7 of the positive and negative charges6 in a material. This sets up a voltage, similar to 8 in a battery.Rand and Fisher found that under the right circumstances and in right types of materials, the light’s magnetic field can also create optical rectification. The light must be shone through7 a 9 that does not 10 electricity, such as glass. And it must be focused to an intensity of 10 million watts per square centimeter8. Sunlight isn’t this intense on its own, but new materials are being sought that would work at lower intensities, Fisher said.“In our most recent paper, we show that incoherent light9 like sun light is theoretically almost as. 11 in producing charge separation as laser light is,” Fisher said. This new 12 could make solar power cheaper, the researchers say. They predict that with improved materials they could achieve 10 percent efficiency in 13 solar power to useable energy. That’s equivalent to today’s commercial-grade solar cells.“To manufacture 14 solar cells, you have to do extensive semiconductor processing,”Fisher said. “All we would need are lenses to focus the light and a fib er to guide it. Glass works for 15 . It’s already made in bulk10, and it doesn’t require as much processing. Transparent ceramics might be even better.”

1.Household jobEveryone knows how the story of Cinderella ends, but did you ever really think about how she spent her days before she met the prince? Her daily routine was not fascinating. She did everything from sweeping the floor to cooking the meals. If someone had asked Cinderella, “Are there any kinds of household work that you particularly hate?” she probably would have answered, “Why, none, of course. Housework is my duty!” In the real world, however, most people have definite dislikes for certain sorts of household work. Two of these tasks are ironing clothes and washing dishes.Ironing clothes is most hated because it is not a task that can be completed quickly or thoughtlessly. Each piece of clothing must be handled individually, so ironing a basket of laundry can take hours! After ironing a piece of clothing with great caution, which requires smoothing out the fabric, and following the seams, you need to place it on a hanger as soon as possible. If you do not follow these directions carefully, it might become wrinkled and you have to start over. Perhaps that is why ironing is not a favorite thing to do. It calls for extreme attention to detail from beginning to end.Another household job that many people dislike is washing dishes. Of course, some people claim that this work is no longer a problem because we have dishwashers now! However, no one would argue that dishes, silverware, and especially pots and pans washed in a dishwasher don’t come out as clean as they do when washed by hand. For this reason, many of us continues to wash our dishes by hand, but we are not necessarily happy doing it. Cleaning dishes is a job that not only takes a lot of energy but also requires the patience to wash and dry them. In addition, unlike ironing clothes, washing dishes is a thing that usually mustbe done every day. I dont know how Cinderella felt about this particular task, but I believe that most people hate it as much as I do.(1).For Cinderella, doing household work is.A an assignmentB a compulsionC a joyD an obligation(2).Most people hate to do clothes-ironing because.A it demands less careB it must be handled skillfullyC it involves careful planningD it is time-consuming(3).To avoid ironing the clothes over again, one should.A know how to iron certain clothes materialB spare no care through all the proceduresC find some proper hangers for the ironedD pay special attention to the seams(4).Many people still prefer washing dishes by hand to machine washing because.A hand-washed dishes are cleanerB dishwashers are not so easily handledC some dishes cannot be machine washedD washing dishes by hand is cheaper(5).Ironing is different from dishwashing in that.A it demands less careB it requires patienceC it is not laboriousD it demands less care。

When we compare them with adults learning a foreign language, we often find this interesting fact. A little child without knowledge or experience often succeeds in a complete mastery of the language. A grown-up person with fully developed mental powers, in most case, may end up with a faulty and inexact command. What accounts for this difference?Despite other explanations, the real answer in my opinion lies partly in the child himself, partly in the behavior of the people around him. In the first place, the time of learning the mother tongue is the most favorable of all, namely, the first years of life. A child hears it spoken from morning till night and, what is more important, always in its genuine form, with the right pronunciation, right intonation, right use of words and right structure. He drinks in all the words and expressions, which come to him in a flash, ever-bubbling spring. There is no resistance: there is perfect assimilation. Then the child has, as it were, private lessons all the year round, while an adult language-student has each week a limited number of hours, which he generally shares with others. The child has another advantage: he hears the language in all possible situations, always accompanied by the right kind of gestures and facial expressions. Here there is nothing unnatural, such as is often found in language lessons in schools, when one talks about ice and snow in June or scorching heat in January. And what a child hears is generally what immediately interests him. Again and again, when his attempts at speech are successful, his desires are understood and fulfilled. Finally, though a childs “teachers” may not have been trained in language teaching, their relations with him are always close and personal. They take great pains to make their lessons easy.1. Compared with adults learning a foreign language, children learn their native language with ease.A. RightB. WrongC. Not mentioned2. This is America’s cultural capital. It is also her biggest city, with a population of nearly 8 million. In the summer it is hot, hot, hot and in the winter it can be very cold. Still there are hundreds of things to do and see all the year round.2. Manhattan is the real center of the city. When people say “New York City,” they usually mean Manhattan. Most of the interesting shops, buildings and museums are here. In addition, Manhattan is the scene of New York’s busy night life. In 1605 the first Europeans came to Manhattan from Holland. They bought the island from the Native Americans for a few glass necklaces worth about $26 today.3. Wall street in Manhattan is the financial heart of the USA. It is also the most important banking center in the world. It is a street of “skyscrapers.” These are those incredible, high buildings, which Americans invented, and built faster and higher than anyone else. Perhaps the two most spectacular skyscrapers in New York are the two towers of the New York World Trade Center. When the sun sets, their 110 floors shine like pure gold.4. Like every big city, New York has its own traffic system. Traffic jams can be terrible. It’s usually quickest to go by subway. The New York subway is easy to use and quite cheap. The subway goes to almost every corner of Manhattan. But it is not safe to take the subway late at night because in some places you could get robbed. New York buses are also easy to use. You see more if you go by bus. There are more than 30,000 taxis in New York. They are easy to see, because they are bright yellow and carry large TAXI signs. Taxis do not go outside the city. However, they will go to the airports. In addition to the taxi fare, people give the taxi driver a tip of 15 percent of the fare’s value.5. Central Park is a beautiful green oasis in the middle of New York’s concrete desert. It is surprisingly big, with lakes and woods, as well as organized recreation areas. New Yorkers love Central Park, and they use it all the time. In the winter, they go ice-skating, and in the summer roller-skating. They play ball, ride horses and have picnics. They go bicycling and boating. There is even a children’s zoo, with wild birds and animals.6. Along the east side of Central Park runs Fifth Avenue, once called “Millionaire’s Row.” In the 19th century, the richest men in America built their magnificent homes here. It is still the most fashionable street in the city, with famous department stores.7. Broadway is the street where you will find New York’s best-known theaters. But away from the bright lights and elegant clothes of Broadway are many smaller theaters. Their plays are called “off-Broad-way” and are often more unusual than the Broadway shows. As well as many theaters, New York has a famous opera house. This is the Metropolitan, where international stars sing from September until April. Carnegie Hall is the city’s more popular concert hall. But night life in New York offers more than classical music and theater. There are hundreds of nightclubs where people go to eat and dance.1. But appearances can be deceiving: Mileswithin its cracked, frigid shell, Europa probably hides giant pools of liquidwater. Where scientists find liquid water, they hope to find life as well.Since we can’t go diving into Europa’sdept hs just yet, scientists instead have to investigate the moon’s surface forclues to what lies beneath. In a new study, scientists investigated one groupof strange ice patterns on Europa and concluded that the formations mark thetop of an underground pool that holds as much water as the U.S. Great Lakes.Pictures of Europa, which is slightlysmaller than Earth’s moon, clearly show a tangled, icy mishmash of lines andcracks known as “chaos terrains.” These chaotic places cover more thanhalf ofEuropa. For more than 10 years, scientists have wondered what causes theformations. The new study suggests that they arise from the mixing of vastunderground stores of liquid water with icy material near the surface. For scientists who suspect that Europaalso may be hiding life beneath its icy surface, the news about the new lake isexciting.“It would be great if these lakesharbored life,” Britney Schmidt, a planetary scientist who worked on the study, told Science News. “But even if they didn’t, they say that Europa i s doingsomething interesting and active right now.”Schmidt, a scientist at the University of Texas at Austin, and her colleagueswanted to know how chaos terrains form. Since they couldn’t rocket to Europa tosee for themselves, they searched for similar formations here on Earth. Theystudied collapsed ice shelves in Antarctica and icy caps on volcanoes in Iceland. Thosefeatures on Earth formed when liquid water mixed with ice. The scientists nowsuspect something similar might be happening on Europa: that as water and iceof different temperatures mingle and shift, the surface fractures. This wouldexplain the jumbled ice sculptures.“Fracturing catastrophically disruptsthe ice in the same way that it causes ice shelves to collapse on Earth,”Schmidt told Sci ence News. She and her team found that the process could becausing chaos terrains to form quickly on Europa. The new study suggests that on thismoon, elements such as oxygen from the surface blend with the deep bodies ofwater. That mixture may create an environment that supports life.16.The liquid water of an underground pool of Europa is estimated xxxxx of the US Greatlakes.A. RightB. WrongC. What Rand and his colleagues found isthat at the right intensity, when light is traveling through a material thatdoes not 54 electricity, the light field cangenerate magnetic effects that are 100 million times stronger than previouslyexpected. Under these circumstances, the magnetic effects develop strength 55toa strong electric effect.“This could lead to a new kind of solarcell without semiconductors and without absorption to prod uce charge separation,” Rand said. “In solar cells, the 56goesinto a material, gets absorbed and creates heat. Here, we expect to have a verylow heat load2. Instead of the light being absorbed, energy is stored in themagnetic moment3. Intense magnetization can be induced by intense light andthen it is ultimately capable of providing a capacitive power 57Whatmakes this possible is a previously undetected brand of “opticalrectification,” says William Fisher, a doctoral student in applied physics. Intraditional optical rectification, light's electric field causes a chargeseparation, or a pulling 58of the positive and negative charges ina material. This sets up a voltage, similar to 59in a battery.Rand and Fisher found that under the rightcircumstances and in right types of materials, the light's magnetic field canalso create optical rectification. The light must be shone through a 60thatdoes not conduct electricity, such as glass. And it must be focused to anintensity of 10 million watts per square centimeter8. Sunlight isn't this 61onits own, but new materials are being sought that would work at lowerintensities, Fisher said.“In our most recent paper, we show thatincoherent light9 like sunlight is theoretically almost 62effectivein pr oducing charge separation as laser light is,” Fisher said. This new 63couldmake solar power cheaper, the researchers say. They predict that with improvedmaterials they could achieve 10 percent efficiency in converting solar power touseable energy. That's equivalent to today's commercial-grade solar cells.“To manufacture modem solar cells, youhave to do 64semiconductor processing,”Fisher said.“All we would need are lenses to focus the light and a fiber to guide it. Mad Scientist Stereotype OutdatedDo people still imagine a physicist as a bearded man in glasses or has the image of the mad scientist changed? The Institute of Physics set out to find out whether the stereotype of a physics'boffin' (科学家)still exists by conducting a survey on shoppers in London. The people were asked to identify the physicist from a photograph of a line-up of possible suspects. 98 percent of those asked got it wrong. The majority of people picked a white male of around 60,wearing glasses and with a white beard. While this stereotype may have been the image of an average physicist fifty years ago,the reality is now very different. Since 1960 the number of young women entering physics has doubled and the average age of a physicist is now 31.The stereotype of the absent-minded scientist has lasted a long time because the media and Hollywood help promote the image of men in white lab coats with glasses sitting by blackboards full of equations(等式)or working with fizzing (嘶嘶响)test tubes. These stereotypes are really damaging to society. Very good school children are put off studying science because they don't see people like themselves on television or in magazines doing science. They simply don't relate to the media's image of the mad scientist. This is one reason why fewer young people are choosing to do science at university. If we want to encourage more young people to study science subjects,we need to change this image of the scientist and make science careers more attractive. But we must also develop children's interest in science. In an attempt to change this negative image,an increasing number of science festivals are being organized. Thousands of people from secondary schools are also encouraged to take part in nationwide science competitions of which the most popular are the national science Olympiads. Winning national teams then get the opportunity to take part in the International Science Olympiads which are held in a different country every year. These events are all interesting for the young people who take part but they only involve a small proportion of students who are already interested in science. It seems that there is a long way to go before science becomes attractive as subjects like computer studies or fashion and design.1 Most people have similar ideas of what a physicist looks like.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned2 The majority of physicists in Britain today are Cambridge graduatesA RightB WrongC Not mentioned3 The media and the cinema have played a role in promoting the image of the mad scientist.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned4 There will be more women scientists than men scientists in. the futureA RightB WrongC Not mentioned5 More children will study science if it becomes more attractive.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned6 The image of the mad scientist is really encouraging to society.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned7 The International Science Olympiads are held once every two years.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned【参考答案】1.
