Always第三部分阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)AIt was the end of my first day as a waitress in a busy New York restaurant. My cap had gone away, and my feet hurt. The loaded plates I carried seemed to be heavier and heavier. Tired and discouraged, I d idn’t seem able to do anything right. As I made out a check for a family with several children who had changed their ice-cream order a dozen times, I was ready to stop. Then the father smiled at me as he handed me my tip. “Well done,” he said,“you’ve looked after us really well.” Suddenly my tiredness disappeared. I smiled back, and later, when the manager asked me how I’d liked my first day, I said, “Fine!” Those few words of praise had changed everything. Praise is like sunlight to human spirit; we cannot flower and grow without it. And yet, most of us are only too ready to apply to others the cold criticism (批评), but are unwilling to give out fellows the warm sunshine of praise. Perhaps that is why one word of praise can bring such pleasure. It’s strange how chary we are about praising. Perhaps it’s because few of us know how to accept it. It’s especially rewarding to give praise in areas in which effort generally goes unnoticed. An artist gets admired for a glorious (关荣的)picture,a cook for a perfect meal. But do you ever tell your laundry (洗衣房)manager how pleased you are when the shirts are done just right? In fact,to give praise costs the giver nothing but a moment’s thought and a moment’s effort.56.Which of the following can’t describe the writer’s situa tion before she got her tip?A. She was tired.B. She was busy.C. She was sorry.D.She was confident.57.According to the passage, which of the following is least likely to be given praise?A.An artist.B.A cook.C.A waitress.D.A laundry manager.58. The underlined word “chary” in Paragraph 2 means________.A.cautious B.careful C.unwilling D.greedy 59.What is the best title of the passage?A.Why Do You Praise Others?B.Why do You Criticize Others?C.Be Generous to Give Others Praise!D.Don’t Criticize Others!BDear Students,I am delighted to be your guest.I would like to tell you about myself. I have been a news reporter for the past fifteen years. I chose this job so I could travel the world, but the job has taught me many unforgettable lessons. The work is sometimes difficult. I have seen famines, wars, earthquakes, poverty and death. But I have also seen courage, hope and happiness. In India, I visited a city where there were many homeless children. Some were as young as four years old. They lived in the streets and survived by begging or stealing. But then a wonderful lady called Rosa opened a home for them. Within one year, she was looking after two hundred children. She clothed them, fed them, and taught them. She gave them hope.Another time, I was in Turkey after a terrible earthquake, in one place. I found an old lady whose house was in ruins, her son was missing and rescuer workers said there was no chance that he was still alive. But the old lady did not give up hope. For four days, she moved heavy stones one at a time by herself. She did not stop until she found her son. He was alive. Here in China, I met a young boy with a serious condition. He had undergone (经历)twenty operations and spent nearly hiswhole life in hospital. I thought he would be sad, but when I met him, his smile was so warm and welcoming. In life, we need role models that we can admire and learn from. When my life is difficult, I try to remember the courage and goodness of these three people.60. The underlined word “ famine ” in Paragraph 2 means __________.A. pleasureB. joyC. luckD. extreme lack of food61. What can we learn about Rosa ?A. CanadaC. TurkeyD. India63. For what does the speaker admire the Turkish woman and the Chinese boy?A. Their bravery.B. Their strong mind.C. Their age.D. Their luck.CA simple flower made headlines in the British press last week. How could that be? British Prime Minister David Cameron and his ministers were attending a reception hosted by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. They insisted on wearing poppies (罂粟花) in their buttonholes. What's wrong with that?According to the Global Times, Chinese officials clearly had asked the UK delegation not to wear poppies. The British said that poppies meant a great deal to them on that day and they would wear them all the same.So what's the importance of the poppy? It's a flower which has different cultural and symbolic meanings for British and Chinese people. From the Chinese point of view, the poppy is a symbol of China's humiliation at the hands of European powers in the Opium Wars of the 19th century. Britain forced China to open the borders to trade —including in the opium —which was made from poppies grown in India.Yet from the British viewpoint the poppy is a reminder of the killing during World War Ⅰ. Red poppies grew on the battlefields of Flanders in Belgium where many thousands of British soldiers died or were buried. Since then, Poppy Day (November 11 ) has become a time in the UK to wear poppies and remember the sacrifices of British soldiers and civilians in times of war.So you can see that the poppy sets off strong feelings in the hearts of Chinese and British people for different reasons. And it makes sense for us to try to understand each other's standpoint(立场).Of course cultural differences can also be interesting and funny. And what one nation thinks is an acceptable gift may be viewed differently by their guest from overseas. US PresidentBarack Obama gave a gift of an iPod to Britain's Queen — a dull person with no interest in music. Obama also presented Gordon Brown with a fine selection of American movies. But they were in US format (模式)and impossible to play on British DVD players. Many countries have diplomats(外交官)stationed overseas. Diplomats provide information and advice to their governments back home. However, sometimes it would seem that even diplomats can overlook (忽视)the cultural importance of a small flower.64.British Prime Minister David Cameron probably attended a reception in Beijing on ________.A.October 1 B.November 11C.December 31 D.January 165.The poppy reminds the Chinese of________.A.the shame caused by European countries in the 19th centuryB.the British soldiers who were killed and buried during World War ⅠC.the Chinese soldiers killed during World War ⅡD.the suffering caused by Britain during World War Ⅰ66.The diplomatic(外交的)problem in Beijing is mainly caused by ___.A.the translation mistake B.the language difference C.the cultural difference D.the different lifestyle 67.We can infer that ________.A.Britain's Queen is not interested in artB.Gordon Brown was fond of American movies US President Barack Obama sent himC.US President Barack Obama received a gift for musicD.Britain's Queen may not like the iPod US President Barack Obama presented herDWork is very important to Americans, and most take pride in their work. The fruit must be picked when it is perfectly ripe. But with pickers in short supply in recent years, growers needed to quickly find another way to harvest their crops. Tevel Aerobotics Technologies came to the farmers' rescue with the Flying Autonomous Robots (FARs) that can help pick fruit.“Not finding enough fruit pickers is every farmer's biggest concern,” Yaniv Maor, Tevel's founder and CEO said. Ask any farmer, anywhere in the world and they'll tell you they don't have the people. Food consumption is increasing, but labor availability (劳动力可用性) is decreasing. If pickers are not available, fruit will go bad bn the trees. The flying robots will work day and night in almost any weather, without taking a break, to pick as much ripe fruit as possible.Maor set up Tevel in 2017 and developed the technology after seeing young Israelis pick fruit and get tired after a few hours. He realized that there had to be a better way, so he began developing the software and artificial intelligence (AI) that are needed for the smart robot pickers. “We have to teach the robots about the structure of each fruit, how to access the fruit and how to rotate (转动) it and disconnect it from the tree,” Maor said. The flying robots circle round trees and pick only the ripe ones with a twist(扭动) of their integrated grasper arms. The robots are fitted with cameras that use AI to assess the size and colorof the fruit so that only the ripe ones are picked. The cameras also ensure that, the robots' paths are not blocked. The robots are currently picking Asian pears in Israel. In 2022, the FARs were used in pilot programs in Italy to pick peaches and other fruits, as well as in the US. They are not a replacement for labor, instead, they are a solution fer the inadequate human pickers. In the future fewer people will work in picking and more will work in managing the robots, analyzing the data and making decisions.18. Why are the FARs developed?A. To meet the shortage of pickers to pick fruit.B. To improve the software and AI for smart robots.C. To help farmers keep the fruit in perfect condition.D. To relieve farmers from the tiredness of picking fruit.29. What can we infer from paragraphs 2 and 3?A. Maor developed the FARs out of curiosity.B. The FARs can produce more fruit for food consumption.C. Labor shortage is an urgent problem in every country.D. The FARs can work without stop in almost any weather.30. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?A. How the robots work.B. What the robots consist of.C. Why the robots are useful.D. Where the robots are used.31. What is the author's attitude towards the FAR?A. Doubtful.B. Positive.C. Worried.D. Unclear.DTourists visiting La Gomera and El Hierro in the Canary Islands can often hear locals communicating over long distances by whistling--not a tune, but the Spanish language. The locals are communicating in Silbo, a whistled Spanish language.Whistled languages are almost developed in rough, mountainous regions or in thick forest. That's because whistled speech carries much farther than ordinary speech or shouting. As a result, whistled speech can be understood up to 10.times as far away as ordinary shouting. That lets people communicate even when they cannot easily approach close enough to shout. On La Gomera, for example, a few traditional shepherds(牧羊人) still whistle to one another across mountain valleys that could take hours to cross.Whistled languages work because many of the key elements of speech can be produced in a whistle, says Meyer. We distinguish (区分) one, speech sound from another by small differences in their sound frequency patterns. A long e, for example, is formed higher in the mouth than a long o, giving it a higher sound. To language scientists, such languages are more than just a curiosity. By studying whistled languages, they hope to learn more about how our brains get meaning from the complex sound patterns of speech. Whistling may even provide a chance to know one of the most dramatic jump forward in human evolution(进化): the origin of language itself.Despite their interest to both language experts and casual observers, whistled languages are disappearing rapidly all over the world, and some, such as the whistled form of the Tepehua language in Mexico, have already disappeared. ". now you still find whistled speech only in places that are very, very remote, that have had less connect with modern uty and less access to roads,” Meyer says.Fortunately, there is still hope. UNESCO, the UN cultural organization, has listed two whistled languages, Silbo, and a whistled Turkish, as the world's cultural heritage. Such attention can lead to conservation efforts.32. What led to the development of whistled languages?A. Geographic inaccessibility.B. Rapid increase in tourism.C. Greater information capacity.D. Interest of language experts.33. Why are a long “e” and a long “o” mentioned in paragraph 3?A. To show what key elements speech has.B. To explain the differences between speech sound frequency patterns.C. To prove the popularity of whistled language in the world.D. To compare whistled languages and ordinary languages34. What might be a reason or the disappearance of whistled languages according to Meyer?A. Construction of cities.B. Lack of attention.C. Expansion of other cultures.D. Modernization.35. Which of the following could be the best title for the text?A. Why People Used Whistled LanguagesB. How Whistles Languages DisappearedC. How Whistled Languages DevelopedD. Then I found that my mother was not the best teacher for me. It wasn't that she shouted, or told me that I was doing poorly. As you can imagine, my mother's "helpful instructions" only managed to make me more nervous.Since I could no longer practice with her, the job was placed in the hands of my father. The idea of learning from Dad was not one that thrilled me. I loved him dearly, but I just did not see Dad as someone I could be comfortable learning from. He almost never talked. We shared a typical father-daughter relationship. He'd ask how school was, and I'd say it was fine. Unfortunately, that was the most of our conversations. Spending hours alone with someone who might as well have been a stranger really scared me.As we got into the car that first time, I was not surprised at what happened. Dad and I drove around, saying almost nothing, aside from a few instructions on how to turn. As my lessons went on, however, things began to change. Dad would turn the radio up so I could fully appreciate his favorite Stones music. And he actually began talking. I was soon hearing about past failed dates, "basic body" gym class, and other tales from his past, including some of his first meeting with Mom.Dad’s sudden chattiness was shocking until I thought about why he was telling me so much in the car. In all the years that I had wondered why my father never spoke that much, I had never stopped to consider that it was because I had never bothered to listen. Homework, friends, and even TV had all called me away from him, and, consequently, I never thought my quiet father had anything to say.Since I began driving with him, my driving skill has greatly increased. More important, though, is that my knowledge of who my father is has also increased. Just living with him wasn't enough— it took driving with him for me to get to know someone who was a mystery.4. The author couldn't practice driving with her mother because .A. she couldn't talk with her motherB. her mother made her nervousC. her father wanted to teach herD. she didn't trust her mother5. At first, the idea of learning driving from her father made her .A. happyB. disappointedC. satisfiedD. uneasy6. What surprised the author when the driving lessons went on?A. Her Dad was a chatty person.B. Her Dad was the best teacher.C. Her Dad liked modern music.D. Her Dad told her his sad stories.7. With her story "Car Talk", the author indicates that .A. fathers love their daughters dearlyB. family members need real communicationC. mothers are less patient than fathersD. it takes time to improve the father-daughter relationshipCFor career changers thinking about growth and advancement potential, forget the blue-collar and white-collar categories: Green is the way to go. In addition, in order to meet the increasing demands of environment-friendly equipment, both green product designer and educated and trained workers are needed. Management of environmental organizations also demands a large number of environmental managers.Where can you find green-collar jobs? If so, you may have admired their beautiful colors and sweet songs. But do you know these feathered friends can actually do more than that?A new study published in the journal Scientific Reports finds that exposure to birds, either in the home or outdoors, can boost people’s moods.Researchers at King’s College London used a smartphone app built by the school’s Urban Mind project to collect the real-time feelings of study participants upon seeing or hearing a bird. A total of 1,292 people living in the United Kingdom, Europe, and the United States participated in the study which was conducted between April 2018 and October 2021.The app asked participants three times a day whether they could see or hear a bird followed by a series of questions on their mental well-being. Participants were also asked questions about whether they could see trees, plants or hear any water to see if people were experiencing better mental well-being due to being in or seeing nature, and not just because of exposure to birds.According to the study, the mental well-being of study participants with and without depression was significantly improved after seeing a bird or hearing birdsong compared to not seeing or hearing a bird. There is a growing number of studies that link spending time outdoors (either in green leafy places or next to bodies of water) to improved mental health. But there are few studies that look at how different aspects of nature can play into humans’ me ntal well-being.And while the study adds to the small pile of research on birds and mental health, the report marks the first time researchers have studied the responses to birds and mental well-being in real-time, according to Ryan Hammoud, lead author of the study.“They kind of examine nature as a single object when nature includes many different characteristics and features like trees, plants, water, birds,” said Hammoud, “We choose to focus on bird life to try and understand which specific characteristics of nature benefit mental well-being.”12.What is the purpose of paragraph 1?A.To introduce a phenomenon. B.By observing the behavior of birds.C.By gathering feelings of participants. D.By studying people’s effect on birds. 14.What does Hammoud think of the new study?A.Pioneering. B.Interesting. C.Conventional. D.Practical. 15.What is the main idea of the text?A.Bird watching has become a popular hobby.B.Exposure to birds can improve mental well-being.C.Nature is the best medicine for mental health issues.D.Spending time outdoors can impact mental health positively.第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。
