""No, but I'll recognize it, there was a picture in the magazine.”"Oh, stop. There it is!”The museum was free. We entered, excited. A group of people sitting in the hall stopped talking and stared at us."May I help you?" a man asked. "No, "I said.”We're fine.” Tour guides got on my nerves. What if they talked a long time about a painting you weren't that interested in? Sally had gone upstairs. The people in the hall seemed very nosy(爱窥探的), keeping their eyes on me with curiosity. What was their problem? I saw some nice sculptures in one room. Suddenly I sensed a man standing behind me. "Where do you think you are?” he asked. I turned sharply. "The McNay Art Museum!" He smiled, shaking his head. "Sorry, the McNay is on New Braunfels Street." "What’s this place?” I asked, still confused. "Well, it's our home." My heart jolted(震颤). I raced to the staircase and called out, "Sally! Come down immediately! ""There's some really good stuff(艺术作品)up there.”She stepped down, looking confused. I pushed her toward the front door, waving at the family, saying, "Sorry, please forgive us, you have a really nice place." Outside, when I told Sally what happened, she covered her mouth, laughing. This time, we stayed together, in case anything else unusual happened.Thirty years later, a woman approached me in a public place. "Excuse me, did you ever enter a residence, long ago, thinking it was the McNay Museum?”"Yes. But how do you know? We never told anyone. ""That was my home. I was a teenager sitting in the hall. As we go about our everyday lives, we mentally attempt to place people in terms of their statuses. For example, we must judge whether the person in the library is a reader or a librarian, whether the telephone caller is a friend or a salesman, whether the unfamiliar person on our property is a thief or a meter reader, and so on.The statuses we assume often vary with the people we encounter, and change throughout life. Most of us can, at very high speed, assume the statuses that various situations require. Much of social interaction consists of identifying and selecting among appropriate statuses and allowing other people to assume their statuses in relation to us. This means that we fit our actions to those of other people based on a constant mental process of appraisal and interpretation. Although some of us find the task more difficult than others, most of us perform it rather effortlessly. A status has been compared to ready-made clothes. Within certain limits, the buyer can choose style and fabric. We must choose from among the clothing presented by our society. Furthermore, our choice is limited to a size that will fit,as well as by our pocketbook . Having made a choice within these limits we can have certain alterations made, but apart from minor adjustments,we tend to be limited to what the stores have on their racks. Statues too come ready made, and the range of choice among them is limited.56. In the first paragraph, the writer tells us that statuses can help us ______.A. determine whether a person is fit for a certain jobB. behave appropriately in relation to other peopleC. protect ourselves in unfamiliar situationsD. make friends with other people57. According to the writer, people often assume different statuses ______.A. in order to identify themselvesB. in order to better identify othersC. as their mental processes changeD. as the situation changes58. By saying that “We must choose from among the cl othing presented by our society",the writer means_______.A. different people have different styles of clothesB. ready-made clothes may need alterationsC. statuses come ready made just like clothesD. our choice of statuses is limitedV: 阅读表达10%阅读短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题。

高中英语课时检测17Unit5MusicPeriod1含解析新人教版必修第二册
Unit 5 Period 1Ⅰ. 阅读理解AHospitals employ many therapeutic (治疗的) methods, such asmedication (药物), massage (按摩) therapy and music therapy. Andmusic therapy is growing in popularity.Sandra Siedliecki is a Senior Scientist at the NursingInstitute of Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. She says music is a low-costtreatment. And she says scientists have done a lot of research on music’s effect on pain. Dr. Marian Good did a lot of studies looking at surgery (外科) patients and the use of music. In her studies, patients just listened to relaxing music. Dr. Good found that her surgery patients took fewer painkillers after they listened to music. Music had a good effect on short-term pain. However, chronic pain, the kind that recurs (复发) continually, changed a little under the effect of music.Dr. Linda Chlan was studying something different. She was not interested in patients’ pain, but instead, their anxiety. She spent a lot of time with people who were in the hospital because their anxiety was so great that the y couldn’t breathe. People with this condition often have to use breathing machines. Dr. Chlan said that the machines sometimes did little to improve their condition. Sometimes they even made things worse. The patients would become more anxious. Dr. Chlan let nurses tell patients that music was a good choice to make them feel better. They also placed signs near the patients’ beds — Listen to your music at least twice a day. The people who listened to music had a reduction (减少) in the amount of medication they received. In addition, their anxiety reduced by about 36 percent. Both doctors had similar explanations for why music was so helpful. Music can be a very powerful distractor (使分心的事物) in the brain when we’re listening to music that is pleasing and then it interrupts stressful thoughts.【语篇概述】音乐疗法在许多医院越来越流行。

一、阅读
When my family moved to America in 2010 from a small village in Guangdong, China, we brought not only our luggage, but also our village rules, customs and culture. One of the rules is that young people should always respect(尊敬) elders. Unluckily, this rule led to my very firs t embarrassment in the United States.
I had a part-time job as a waiter in a Chinese restaurant. One time, when I was serving food to a middle-aged couple, the wife asked me how the food could be served so quickly. I told her that I had made sure they got their food quickly because I always respect the elderly. As soon as I said that, her face showed great displeasure. My manager, who happened to hear what I said, took me aside and gave me a long lecture about how sensitive(敏感) Americans are and how they dislike the description “old”.
I then walked back to the table and apologized t o the wife. After the couple heard my reason, they understood that the problem was caused by cultural differences, so they laughed and were no longer angry.
In my village in China, people are pro ud of being old. Not so many people live to be seventy or eighty, and people who reach such an age have the most knowledge and experience. Young people always respect older people because they know they can learn from their rich experience.
However, in the United States, people think “growing old” is a problem since “old” shows that a person is going to retire or that the body is not working well. Here many people try to keep themselves away from growi ng old by doing exercises or jogging, and women put on makeup, hoping to look young. When I told the couple in the restaurant that I respect the elderly, they got angry because this caused them to feel they had failed to stay youn g. I had told them something they didn’t want to hear.
After that, I changed the way I had been with older people. It is not that I don’t respect them any more. I st ill respect them, but now I don’t show my feelings through words.

4. After this experience, I _______.
A. lost my job in the restaurant
B. made friends with the couple
C. no longer respected the elderly
D. changed my way with older people
5. Which of the following is TRUE?
