The Chinese OutpostBForeign visitors to the UK might be disappointed when they learn that not everyone there speaks like Harry Potter and his friends. Usually, there's an assumption by many non-Brits that everyone in Britain speaks with what's known as a Received Pronunciation(RP, 标准发音)accent, also called "the Queen's English". However, while many people do talk this way, most Britons speak in their own regional accents.Scouse, Glaswegian and the Black Country-from Liverpool, Glasgow and the West Midlands-are just three of the countless non-RP accents that British people speak with. There are even differences in accents between towns or cities just 30 kilometers apart. What is even more disappointing is that not speaking in a RP accent may mean a British person is judged and even treated differently in their everyday life.In a 2015 study by the University of New South Wales videos of people reading a passage in three different UK accents were shown to a second group of people. The group then rated how intelligent they thought the readers sounded. The lowest-rated accent wasthe Brummie accent, native to people from Birmingham, a city whose accent is considered the working class. However, there is no need to be disappointed though you are not speaking in a RP accent. In fact, doing the opposite may even give you advantages.Kong Seong-jae, 25, is an Internet celebrity from Seoul. After studying in the UK, he picked up several regional accents. He's now famous for his online videos, where he shows off the various accents he's learned. "British people usually get really excited when I use some of their local dialect words, and they become much friendlier. I think it makes a bit of bond between local people and foreigners to speak in their local accent," he said.So if you' re working on perfecting your British accent, try to speak like someone from Liverpool, Glasgow or Birmingham. You may not sound like Harry Potter, but you are likely to make more friends.4. What can we infer from paragraph 1?A. Non-Brits usually hold that all Britons speak in a RP accent.B. Only "the Queen's English" is accepted in the UK.C. Foreign visitors are disappointed at their own spoken English.D. Any Received Pronunciation around the world is also called "the Queen's English"5. What do people think of the Brummie accent?A. It is favored by foreign visitors to the UK.B. It is closest to the RP accent.C. It is smart and easy to understand.D. It is spoken by people of the working class.6. What does the underlined phrase "doing the opposite" in Paragraph 4 refer to?A. Speaking in a RP accent.B. Speaking in regional accentsC. Speaking the Brummie accent.D. Speaking like Harry Potter.7. What is the passage mainly about?A. A study about the most intelligent accent in Britain.B. A comparison between different British accents.C. How much British people value the RP accent.D. The impact of regional accents on people's lives.CIf English means endless new words, difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation, you are wrong. Haven't you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a second language? According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power. Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter. This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles. The study also found the effect is greater when the younger people learn a second language. A team led by Dr. Andrea, from University College London, took a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of "early bilinguals" who had learnt a second language before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners.Scans showed that grey matter density(密度)in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference was.“Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language, "said the scientists. It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn. Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales, has researched the link between bilingualism and math skills. "Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes your brain more flexible(灵活的), " he said. "You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas. The findings were matched in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the ages of two and thirty-four. Reading, writing, and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better. The winter of 1996 was especially brutal. It was a hard time in my own life too. A neck injury had kept me flat in bed for nearly a year. “Just in time for Easter,” my husband, Dick, said. But how could I feel the joy when the snow was four feet deep and I had months of painful physical treatment ahead?I was doing the dishes one day, feeling hopeless when there was a tap on the glass. It was a branch of the troublesome cottonwood (棉白杨).Back in the fall of1979, it was a new subdivision(细枝) then, an eight-foot stick. The people who’d briefly occupied the house before us had placed the pipe from the pump next to it. The earth was so wet that the poor thing had fallen down, most of its bare root system pointing skyward, and blowing hopelessly back and forth in the cold wind. Dick decided to pull it out one day, but I protested.“Look at how hard it’s trying!” I said, pointing to the way it strongly kept hold of the earth. “It deserves a chance.”Dick borrowed some tools. We packed dry soil around the tree and put up some stakes (桩) into the ground, making it stand upright. That winter was still terrible. Surprisingly, in spring my “rescue stick” put forth a few leaves and lots of branches. The year after that, we were able to remove the stakes. By the 1990s that little stick was a giant, towering over the house. Now the tapping at the window continued, louder as the wind picked up, almost as though to tell me to look up. At last, I did. I caught my breath. In the window against the icy blue sky, thousands and thousands of fresh red buds were waving in the wind. The tree was bursting with life and I had a wonderful Easter.()4.What is the meaning of the underlined word “brutal” in Paragraph 1?A.Busy.B.Hard.C.Long.D.Warm.()5.How did the author and her husband Dick rescue the new subdivision?A.By supporting the tree firmly.B.By watering the tree regularly.C.By distributing chemical fertilizers.D.By gathering sticks day and night.()6.What is the author’s purpose of writing the last paragraph?A.To inform us of the current condition of her cottonwood.B.To imply that she’d pulled through t he hardest time and felt hopeful.C.To tell us that the tree had survived from the awful winter.D.To suggest what she was going to do for the coming festival.()7.Which of the following can serve as the main idea of the passage?A.A friend in need is a friend indeed.B.There is no garden without its weeds.C.Well begun is half done.D.Where there is life, there is hope.CBacteria are an annoying problem for astronauts. The micro-organisms(微生物) from our bodies grow uncontrollably on surfaces of the International Space Station, so astronauts spend hours cleaning them up each week. How is NASA overcoming this very tiny big problem? It’s turning to a bunch of high school kids. But not just any kids. It is depending on NASA HUNCH high school classrooms, like the one science teachers Gene Gordon and Donna Himmelberg lead at Fairport High School in Fairport, New York.HUNCH is designed to connect high school classrooms with NASA engineers. For the past two years, Gordon’s students have been studying ways to ki ll bacteria in zero gravity, and they think they’re close to a solution(解决方案). “We don’t give the students any breaks. They have to do it just like NASA engineers,” says Florence Gold, a project manager.“There are no tests,” Gordon says. “There is no gr aded homework. There almost are no grades, other than ‘Are you working towards your goal?’ Basically, it’s ‘I’ve got to produce this product and then, at the end of the year, present it to NASA.’ Engineers come and really do an in-person review, and…it’s n ot a very nice thing at times. It’s a hard business review of your product.”Gordon says the HUNCH programme has an impact(影响) on college admissions and practical life skills. “These kids are so absorbed in their studies that I just sit back. I don’t teach.” And that annoying bacteria? Gordon says his students are e-mailing daily with NASA engineers about the problem, readying a workable solution to test in space.()8.What do we know about the bacteria in the International Space Station?A.They are hard to get rid of.B.They lead to air pollution.C.They appear in different forms.D.They damage the instruments.()9.What is the purpose of the HUNCH programme?A.To strengthen teacher-student relationships.B.To sharpen students’ communication skills.C.To allow students to experience zero gravity.D.To link space technology with school education.()10.What do the NASA engineers do for the students in the programme?A.Check their product.B.Guide project designs.C.Adjust work schedules.D.Grade their homework.()11.What is the best title for the text?A.NASA: the home of astronautsB.Space: the final homework frontierC.Nature: an outdoor classroomD.HUNCH:a college admission reformDBy trying to tickle(挠痒痒) rats and recording how their nerve cells respond, Shimpei Ishiyama and his adviser are discovering a mystery that has puzzled thinkers since Aristotle expected that humans, given their thin skin and the unique ability to laugh, were the only ticklish animals. It turns out that Aristotle was wrong. In their study published on Thursday, Ishiyama and his adviser Michael Brecht found that rats squeaked and jumped with pleasure when tickled on their backs and bellies. These signs of joy changed according to their moods. And for the first time, they discovered a special group of nerve cells. These nerve cells made this feeling so powerful that it causes an individual being tickled to lose control. To make sure that he had indeed found a place in the brain where tickling was processed, Ishiyama then stimulated that area with electrical currents. The rats began to jump like rabbits and sing like birds.“It’s a truly groundbreaking discovery,” said Jeffrey Burgdorf, a neuroscientist at North-western University who reviewed the paper. “It takes the study of emotion to a new level.”Burgdorf has played a central role in our understanding of animal tickling. He was part of a team that first noticed, in the late 1990s, that rats made special noises when they were experiencing social pleasure. Others had already noted that ratsrepeatedly made short and high sounds during meals. But the lab where Burgdorf worked noticed that they emitted similar sounds while playing. And so one day, the senior scientist in the lab said, “Let’s go and tickle some rats.” They qu ickly found that those cries of pleasure doubled.“The authors have been very adventurous,” said Daniel O’Connor, a neuroscientist at Johns Hopkins University who studies touch. To him, that finding was very surprising.“Why does the world literally feel different when you are stressed out?” he said. “This is the first step towards answering that question. It gives us a way to approach it with experimental rigour(严谨).”()12.What contributed to humans’ being ticklish according to Aristotle?A.Their special skin.B.Their social pleasure.C.Their nervous system.D.Their willingness to touch.()13.Why did the researchers make use of electrical currents?A.To discover the special group of nerve cells.B.To experiment on different animals.C.To follow the process of tickling.D.To prove their finding.()14.Which of the following statements will Jeffrey Burgdorf agree with?A.The research process is full of risks.B.The finding of the study is surprising and unbelievable.C.The new discovery is beneficial to the study of emotion.D.The finding of the study actually contradicts modern science.()15.What is the best title for the text?A.The life of ratsB.How rats laughC.A wonderful scientistD.A new discovery about rats第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

Surrounded by working farms,he quickly became interested in the grow-it-yourself idea and rented a piece of 30-by-30-foot land. He planted tomatoes, eggplants and other vegetables—enough to feed his family of four for summer. He ended up with so much produce; he couldn’t give it away. He found a local food factory, and donated (捐赠) 120 pounds of fresh vegetables. The following year, with a handful of volunteers and a memorable name—America’s Grow-a-Row, Paillex harvested 1,500 pounds of fresh vegetables, all of which he donated to food banks that give food to poor people. Soon Paillex had a hundred volunteers and needed more land. He visited Meredith and Jeremy Compton, who farm Peaceful Valley Orchards in Pittstown. Could he work on their land?“I guess we were feeling honoured,” says Meredith. Not only do the Comptons welcome Grow-a-Row volunteers, but they also work on the land. What began with a few empty fields has turned into a large local farm. This year, Grow-a-Row will deliver about 250,000 pounds of fresh produce to food banks. Their secret for getting all of this done? Family power. “Each week, a couple of families ‘own’ the garden,” says Paillex. “They water, pick, and deliver, and then hand it off on the Sunday night to the next group of families.”Paillex also welcomes local schoolkids. The date, nicknamed “Day Zero,” has since been postponed multiple times, thanks to the intense conservation efforts by locals, a sharp reduction in agricultural water usage, and a 10 billion-litre donation from the private reservoirs(水库) of the Groenland Farmers Association. The city now has enough water to sustain the current level of usage until July 9, giving residents hope that the rainy season, which begins in June, will be more regular than has been the case lately.Four years ago, Cape Town’s water disaster would have seemed impossible given that the city’s six dams, which can hold 230 billion litres of water, were filled to the brim. However, three years of low rainfall—a third of normal levels—and the ever-increasing population, have reduced the dams to puddles. In an attempt to avoid Day Zero, the government has imposed a strict 50-litre daily limit for all households. Residents are being urged to reduce their water usage by making small changes like taking shorter showers and reusing bathing water to flush toilets. Those that use more have to pay heavy fines. When Day Zero strikes, a million homes or about 75 per cent of the city will lose access to running water. Residents will instead have to wait in line at the over 200 water distribution centres established around the city to obtain 25 litres a day.Though conservation measures will help in the short run, only nature can solve the problem. If the city gets enough rainfall during its winter season from June to August, it will provide much-needed relief. However, the local officials are not sure whether it will happen.()8.What does the underline d word “brim” in the third paragraph probably mean?A.Bottom.B.Top edge.C.Extended part.D.Central part.()9.What effort is being made now to avoid Day Zero?A.Limiting the daily usage of water to 25 litres.B.Establishing over 200 water distribution centres in the city.C.Reducing the city population as much as possible.D.Restricting water usage in agriculture significantly.()10.What does the last paragraph mainly want to convey?A.Tomorrow is still unknown.B.Current efforts will pay off.C.Man is at the mercy of nature.D.It’s time to make joint efforts.()11.What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage?A.To inform us of the severe situation of water shortage in Cape Town.B.To appeal to the world to come together to help people in Cape Town.C.To explain the cause of the severe water shortage in Cape Town.D.To applaud the efforts by people in Cape Town to address water shortage.DA scientist locked himself in a small air-tight plastic tent with 200 plants to see if they could change CO2 into oxygen (氧气) fast enough to keep him alive.Kurtis Baute locked himself in a 3m by 3m tent in his brother’s backyard in British Columbia, Canada. He hoped to find out if by surrounding himself with plants, the CO2 he breathed out could be changed into oxygen to allow him to survive in the locked tent for at least three days. Unfortunately, he had to give up the experiment after only 15 hours, as CO2 levels reached a dangerous point where he risked of suffering brain damage.“I could probably survive in the tent for three days,” Baute wrote on his website. “But my goal is not to just ‘not die’. My goal is to end this project without developing brain damage or just generally causing lasting harm to my body.” But as it turns out, that’s exactly what he risked as the 200 plants he took with him into the tent couldn’t meet his needs. Clearly, a cloudy sky prevented them from receiving all the sunlight they needed to perform photosynthesis (光合作用), so they couldn’t recycle CO2 fast enough.“Plants are great at taking in CO2and they love it. Since it wasn’t a bright and sunny day, they weren’t getting the light they needed, which meant CO2 just kept rising. I had to give up the experiment as that continued,” the young experimenter said.Fifteen hours into the experiment, Baute reached the set danger point and then ended this experiment. Still, he called the experiment a “huge success” as his main goal was actually the terrible effects of climate change and CO2emissions. “The conclusion about my exp eriment is that if CO2is too high, I’ll escape, which is just everyday experiences for many people on this planet. Everyone deserves clean air, but not everyone has it,” he wrote.()12.Why did Kurtis Baute stay in the tent for only 15 hours?A.The tent was too small for him to stay too long.B.The environment in the tent was dangerous for him.C.CO2in the tent couldn’t be changed into oxygen.D.He couldn’t survive in the locked tent any longer.()13.What made it hard for the 200 plants to satisfy Kurt is Baute’s needs?A.His health condition.B.His wrong decision.C.Too much CO2.D.The cloudy weather.()14.What does Kurtis think of the result of the experiment?A.Disappointing.B.Surprising.C.Satisfying.D.Interesting.()15.What is the text mainly about?A.Surviving in the tent.B.The set danger point.C.Making people know the use of plants.D.A test to show the importance of clean air.第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

Usually, there's an assumption by many non-Brits that everyone in Britain speaks with what's known as a Received Pronunciation (RP, 标准发音) accent, also called “the Queen's English”. However, while many people do talk this way, most Britons speak in their own regional accents.Scouse, Glaswegian and the Black Country—from Liverpool, Glasgow and the West Midlands—are just three of the countless non-RP accents that British people speak with. There are even differences in accents between towns and cities just 30 kilometers apart. What is even more disappointing is that not speaking in a RP accent may mean a British person is judged and even treated differently in their everyday life.In a 2015 study by the University of New South Wales, videos of people reading a passage in three different UK accents were shown to a second group of people. The group then rated how intelligent they thought the readers sounded. The lowest-rated accent was the Brummie accent, native to people from Birmingham, a city whose accent is considered the working class. “British people usually get really excited when I use some of their local dialect words, and they become much friendlier. I think it makes a bit of bond between local people and foreigners to speak in their local accent,” he said.So if you're working on perfecting your British accent, try to speak like someone from Liverpool, Glasgow or Birmingham. You may not sound like Harry Potter, but you are likely to make more friends.4.What can we infer from Paragraph 1?A.Non-Brits usually hold that all Britons speak in a RP accent.B.Only “the Queen's English” is accepted in the UK.C.Foreign visitors are disappointed at their own spoken English.D.Any Received Pronunciation around the world is also called “the Queen's English”.5.What do people think of the Brummie accent?A.It is favored by foreign visitors to the UK.B.It is closest to the RP accent.C.It is smart and easy to understand.D.It is spoken by people of the working class.6.What does the underlined phrase “doing the opposite” in Paragraph 4 refer to?A.Speaking in a RP accent.B.Speaking in regional accents.C.Speaking the Brummie accent.D.Speaking like Harry Potter.7.What is the passage mainly about?A.A study about the most intelligent accent in Britain.B.A comparison between different British accents.C.How much British people value the RP accent.D.The impact of regional accents on people's lives.COn Tuesday, the Shenzhen team of Blue Sky Rescue, a domestic non-profit civil rescue team, confirmed that two of its members had died trying to rescue 24 tourists who had got into difficulties.According to the official news, it was on Monday that the rescue team received a telephone call from 24 travelers, who were trapped in a river valley, with a storm on the way and one of the female travelers being badly injured. The team responded immediately. However, when they helped the travelers, two team members got trapped by the rising river water. The next day, they were confirmed dead. The two heroes who gave their own lives to save others are being mourned by all.Who can rescue the rescuers? The question aroused a heated discussion among people. Most of them think we would rather su ch “heroic deeds” were not required. However, that depends on people being more sensible. In the past several years, there have been many cases in which travelers, ignoring the signs saying certain areas are dangerous and off-limits, still have kept on “exploring” unpaved and unmarked regions and ended up needing to be rescued. By doing so, they put not only their own lives at risk but also the lives of those who go to their aid.In this case, although the travelers may have been in an authorized area, they ignored the warnings of an approaching typhoon. It was extremely reckless (鲁莽的) of them to travel into the wild on such a day, as the local weather forecast had warned people against the impending typhoon. Two rescuers have lost their lives because of the thoughtlessness of others.Although the majority of travelers behave properly, some attempt challenging tasks that are obviously beyond their abilities. The law has already made it clear that if a traveler or group gets into difficulties when entering unauthorized regions, they must bear the costs of the rescue operations. The regulations need strengthening to deter travelers from putting their own lives and the lives of others at risk.8.What happened to a woman traveler?A.She lost her way.B.She was trapped on the mountain.C.She died in the storm.D.She was seriously hurt.9.What is the writer's attitude towards some tourists?A.Critical.B.Sympathetic.C.Understanding.D.Admiring.10.What does the underlined word “deter” in the last paragraph mean?A.Protect.B.Keep.C.Excuse.D.Separate.11.What can be a suitable title for this passage?A.The blue sky rescueB.Who can rescue the rescuers?C.Who should bear the costs?D.A deadly typhoonDLiving on mountainous La Gomera, one of Spain's Canary Islands off West Africa, Juan Cabello takes pride in not using a mobile phone or the Internet to communicate. Like his father and grandfather, he uses Silbo Gomero, a language that is whistled (吹口哨), not spoken, and that can be heard more than two miles away.“I use it for everything: to talk to my wife, to tell my kids something, to find a friend if we get lost in a crowd,” Cabello says. “I also make a living from Silbo, performing daily exhibitions at a restaurant.”People throughout La Gomera are known to have used Silbo in the past as a way of communicating over long distances. A strong whistle saved farmers from walking over the hills to give messages or news to neighbors. Then came the phone. Nowadays, it's hard to know how many people still use Silbo. In 1999, it was introduced as a compulsory subject (必修学科) in La Gomera's primary schools, in an effort to prevent the language from going silent. Now 3,000 students are studying it, but only a few people are believed to be able to communicate fully in the whistling language.“Silbo is said to be the most important cultural heritage (遗产) we have,” said Moises Plasencia, the director of the Canary Islands' government's historical heritage department. In fact, little is known about Silbo's origins. Silbo-like whistling has been found in parts of Greece, Turkey, China and Mexico, but none is as developed as Silbo Gomero. One study is looking for signs of Silbo in Venezuela, Cuba and Texas, all places to which Gomerans have gone in the past during hard economic times.“Silbo has many historical and linguistic (语言学上的) values,” Plasencia said. And, as Cabello explains, “It's good for just about anything except for romance: everyone on the island would hear what you're saying!”12.Juan Cabello uses Silbo Gomero .A.in his daily lifeB.to learn computersC.just to make a livingD.only when eating at restaurants13.What can we learn about Silbo Gomero?A.It first started in Greece.B.It is in danger of dying out.C.It is helpful in keeping secrets.D.It is the oldest way of communicating.14.Plasencia thinks it's very important to .A.know the origins of Silbo GomeroB.find the values of Silbo GomeroC.have more cultural heritagesD.protect Silbo Gomero15.What is mainly described in the text?A.A school's subject.B.A famous performer.C.An unusual language.D.A mountainous island.第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。
