Crude oil, or petroleum – a dark, thick ooze from the earth – had been known for hundreds of years. But little use had ever been madeof it. In the 1850’s Samuel M. Kier, a manufactur er in the western Pennsylvania, began collecting the oil from local seepages andrefining it into kerosene, Refining, like smelting, is a process of removing impurities from a raw material.Kerosene was used to light lamps. It was a cheap substitute for whale oil, which was becoming harder to get. Soon there was a large demand for kerosene. People began to search for new supplies of petroleum. The first oil well was drilled by E. L. Drake, a retired railroad conductor. In 1859 he began drilling in Titusville, Pennsylvania. The whole venture seemed so impractical and foolish that onlookers called it “Drake’s Folly”. But when he had drilled down about 70 feet (21 meters), Drake struck oil. His well began to yield 20 barrels ofcrude oil a day.News of Drake’s success brought oil prospectors to the scene. By the early 1860’s these wildcatters were drilling for “black gold” all over western Pennsylvania. The boom rivaled the California gold rush of 1848 in its excitement and Wild West atmosphere. And it brought far more wealth to the prospectors than any gold rush.Crude oil could be refined into many products. For some years kerosene continued to be the principal one. It was sold in grocerystores and door-to-door. In the 1880’s refiners learned how to make other petroleum products such as waxes and lubricating oils. Petroleum was not then used to make gasoline or heating oil.(1).Which of the following is the best title for the passage?A. Oil Refining: A Historical PerspectiveB.

TranslationPart ⅣTranslation1.
As the basic and dominant industry of the national economy, the real estate industry develops into the process of the continuous adjustment. From the middle 1950s to the late 1980s, there didn’t exist real estate market in China. Therefore, China’s real estate industry has been only growing for over 30 years since 1980s, during which, it has undergone the full cycle of boom, recession, depression and revival. Currently, China’s real estate industry is entering into the period of development with steady pace.
在句子“The hotel can accommodate up to 500 guests”中,就是“容纳”的意思。
像过去完成时,在“By the time I got to the party, everyone had already left”这个句子中,“had already left”就体现了过去完成时,表示在过去某个时间点之前已经完成的动作。
“If I were you, I would take the job”
比如,“The athlete's performance was ______ (remarkable),winning the gold medal”这里应该填写“remarkable”,表示“出色的”。

Each passage is followed by five questions or statements. Choose the best answer to each question or decide T/F for each statement. Passage OneMany people who work in London prefer to live outside it, and to go in to their offices or schools every day by train, car or bus, even though this means they have to get up early in the morning and reach home late in the evening. One advantage of living outside London is that houses are cheaper. Even a small flat in London without a garden costs quite a lot to rent. With the same money, one can get a little house in the country with a garden of one’s own. Then, in the country one can really get away from the noise and hurry of busy working lives. Even though one has to get up earlier and spend more time in trains or buses, one can sleep better at night and during weekends and on summer evenings, one can enjoy the fresh, clean air of the country. If one likes gardens, one can spend one’s free time digging, planting, watering and doing the hundred and one other jobs which are needed in a garden. Then, when the flowers and vegetables come up, one has got the reward together with those who have shared the secret of Nature. Some people, however, take no interest in country things: for them, happiness lies in the town, with its cinemas and theatres, beautiful shops and busy streets, dance—halls and restaurants. Such people would feel that their life was not worth living if they had to live it outside London. An occasional walk in one of the parks and a fortnight’s (two weeks) visit to the sea every summer is all the country they want: the rest they are quite prepared to leave to those who are glad to get away from London every night.(1) Which of the following statements is NOT true? _(A) People who love Nature prefer to live outside the city.(B) All the people who work in London prefer to live in the country.(C) Some people enjoying city life prefer to work and live inside London.(D) Many nature lovers, though working in London, prefer to live outside the city.(2) With the same money needed for________, one can buy a little house with a garden in the country.(A) getting a small flat with a garden(B) having a small flat with a garden(C) renting a small flat without a garden(D) buying a small flat without a garden(3) When the garden is in blossom, that one ________ has been rewarded.(A) living in the country(B) having spent time working in the garden(C) having a garden of his own(D) having been digging, planting and watering(4) People who think happiness lies in the city life would feel that _______ if they had to live outside London.(A) their life was meaningless(B) their life was invaluable(C) they didn’t deserve a happy life(D) hey were not worthy of their happy life(5) The underlined phrase get away from in the 3rd paragraph refers to ________.(A) deal(B) do away with(C) escape from(D) prevent away3.Passage TwoThere are three kinds of goals: short—term, medium—range and long—term goals. Short—term goals are those that usually deal with current activities, which we can apply on a daily basis. Such goals can be achieved in a week or less, or two weeks, or possibly, months. It should be remembered that just as a building is no stronger than its foundation, long—term goals cannot amount to very munch without the achievement of solid short—term goals. Upon completing our short—term goals, we should date the occasion and then add new short—term goals that will build on those that have been completed. The intermediate goals build on the foundation of the short—term goals. They might deal with just one term of school or the entire school year, or they could even extend for several years. Any time you move a step at a time, you should never allow yourself to become discouraged or overwhelmed. As you complete each step, you will enforce the belief in your ability to grow and succeed. And as your list of completion dates grow, your motivation and desire will increase. Long —term goals may be related to our dreams of the future. They might cover five years or more. Life is not a static thing. We should never allow a long—term goal to limit us or our course of action.(1) Our long—term goals mean a lot ________.(A) If we cannot reach solid short—term goals(B) If we complete the short—term goals(C) if we have dreams of the future(D) if we put forward some plans(2) New short—term goals are built upon ________.(A) a daily basis(B) your achievement in a week(C) current activities(D) the goals that have been completed(3) When we complete each step of our goals, ________.(A) we will win final success(B) we are overwhelmed(C) we should build up confidence of success(D) we should have strong desire for setting new goals(4) What is the main idea of this passage?(A) Life is a dynamic thing.(B) We should set up long—term goals.(C) Different kinds of goals in life.(D) The limitation of long—term goals.(5) Which of the following statements is wrong according to the passage?(A) The long—term goals cannot amount to very munch without the achievement of solid(B) The intermediate goals build on the foundation of the short-term goals.(C) Life is a static thing, thus we should never allow a long-term goal to limit us or our course of action.(D) We should often add new short-term goals to those which have been completed.4.Passage Three“Tear’em apart!”“Kill the fool!”“Murder the referee(裁判)!”There are common remarks one may hear at various sporting events. At the time they are made, they may seem innocent enough. But let’s not kid ourselves. They have been known to influence behavior in such a way as to lead to real bloodshed. Volumes have been written about the way words affect us. It has been shown that words having certain connotations(含义) may cause us to react in ways quite foreign to what we consider to be our usual humanistic behavior. I see the term “opponent”as one of those words. Perhaps the time has come to delete it from sports terms. The dictionary meaning of the term “opponent”is “adversary”“enemy”and “one who opposes your interests”. Thus, when a player meets an opponent, he or she may tend to take every action, no matter how gross it is. I recall an incident in a handball game when a referee refused a player?s request for a time out for a glove change because he did not consider them wet enough. The player proceeded to rub his gloves across his wet T—shirt and then exclaimed, “Are they wet enough now?”In the heat of battle, players have been observed to throw themselves across the court without considering the consequences that such a move might have on anyone in their way. I have also witnessed a player reaching to his opponent’s intentional and illegal blocking by deliberately hitting him with the ball as hard as he could during the course of play. Off the court, they are good friends. Does that make any sense? It certainly gives proof of a court attitude which departs from normal behavior. Therefore, I believe it is time we elevated(提升) the game to the level where it belongs, thereby setting an example to the rest of the sporting world. Replacing the term “opponent”with “associate”could be an ideal way to start. The dictionary meaning of the term “associate”is “colleague”“friend”and “companion”. Reflect a moment! You may soon see and possibly feel the difference in your reaction to the term “associate”rather than “opponent”.(1) Which of the following statements best expresses the author's view?(A) The words people use can influence their behavior.(B) Unpleasant words in sports are often used by foreign athletes.(C) Aggressive behavior in sports can have serious consequences.(D) Unfair judgments by referees will lead to violence on the sports field.(2) Gross actions are taken during games because the players_______.(A) are too eager to win(B) treat their rivals as enemies(C) are usually short—tempered and easily offended(D) cannot afford to be polite in fierce competitions(3) What did the handball player do when he was not allowed a time out to change his gloves?(A) He angrily hit the referee with a ball(B) He wet his gloves by rubbing them across his T—shirt.(C) He claimed that referee was unfair(D) He refused to continue the game(4) What is the meaning of the word “court”(Para. 4)?(A) please where trials are held(B) official residence of a sovereign(C) space marked for sports(D) courtyard(5) The author hopes to have the current situation in sports improved by ______.(A) regulating the relationship between players and referees(B) calling on players to use clean language in the court(C) raising the referee’s sense of responsibility(D) changing the attitude of players on the sports field5.Passage FourThe French word “renaissance”means rebirth. It was first used in 1855 by the historian Jules Michelet in his History of France, and then adopted by historians of culture, by art historians, and eventually by music historians, all of whom applied it to European culture during the 150 years spanning 1450-1600. The concept of rebirth was appropriate to this period of European history because of the renewed interest in ancient Greek and Roman culture that began in Italy and then spread throughout Europe. Scholars and artists of this period wanted to restore the learning and ideals of the classical civilizations of Greece and Rome. To these scholars this meant a return to human. Fulfillment in life became a desirable goal, and expressing the entire range of human emotions and enjoying the pleasures of the senses were no longer frowned on. Artists and writers now turned to religious subject matter and sought to make their worksunderstandable and appealing. These changes in outlook deeply affected the musical culture of the Renaissance period —how people thought about music as well as the way music was composed and experienced. They could see the architectural monuments, sculptures, plays, and poems that were being rediscovered, but they could not actually hear ancient music —although they could read the writings of classical philosophers, poets, essayists, and music theorists that were becoming available in translation. They learned about the power of ancient music to move the listener and wondered why modern music did not have the same effect. For example, the influential religious leader Bernardino Cirillo expressed disappointment with the music of his time. He urged musicians to follow the example of the sculptors, painters, architects, and scholars who had rediscovered ancient art and literature. The musical Renaissance in Europe was more a general cultural movement and state of mind than a specific set of musical techniques. Furthermore, music changed so rapidly during this century and a half —though at different rates in different countries—that we cannot define a single Renaissance style.(1) Which statement is NOT true about the “Renaissance”?(A) It began from 1450 and came to an end in 1600.(B) It originated in Italy and then spread throughout Europe.(C) People wanted to achieve nothing in life.(D) Artists and writers showed interest in religious subject matter.(2) The phrase “frowned on”(para.1) is closest in meaning to_____.(A) disapproved of(B) forgotten about(C) argued about(D) given up(3) It can be inferred from the passage that thinkers of Renaissance were seeking a rebirth of _____.(A) communication among artists across Europe.(B) spirituality in everyday life(C) a cultural emphasis on human values(D) religious themes in art that would accompany the traditional secular(世俗的) themes.(4) According to the passage, why was Bemaradino Cirillo disappointed with the music of his time?(A) It was not complex enough to appeal to musicians.(B) It had little emotional impact on audiences.(C) It was too dependent on the art and literature of his time.(D) It did not contain enough religious themes.(5) Which of the following is mentioned in the passage as a reason for the absence of a single Renaissance musical style?(A) The musical Renaissance was defined by technique rather than style.(B) The musical Renaissance was too short to give rise to a new musical style.(C) Renaissance musicians adopted the styles of both Greek and Rome musicians.(D) During the Renaissance, music never remained the same for very long.6.Part III Grammar and Vocabulary (20 points)Directions: There are ten incomplete sentences in this part. Each passage is followed by five questions or statements. Choose the best answer to each question or decide T/F for each statement.Passage OneMany people who work in London prefer to live outside it, and to go in to their offices or schools every day by train, car or bus, even though this means they have to get up early in the morning and reach home late in the evening. If one likes gardens, one can spend one’s free time digging, planting, wateringand doing the hundred and one other jobs which are needed in a garden. They have been known toinfluence behavior in such a way as to lead to real bloodshed. Artists and writers now turned to religious subject matter and sought to make their works understandable and appealing.
