Passage One
Questions 6 to 10 are based on the passage you have just heard.

Script:
In 1956, a psychologist George Miller in Harvard University found that the amount of information which can be remembered at one time is between five and nine items, depending on the information.

Between five and nine, the number 7 became known as Miller's Magic Number, the number of items which can be held in short-term memory at any one time.

Miller himself stated that his magic number was for items with one aspect. But if more aspects are included, we can remember more, depending upon our familiarity and the complexity of the subject. For example, we can remember more human faces as there are a number of aspects, such as hair color, hair style, shape of face, facial hair, etc.

We remember phone numbers by their aspects of two or more groupings. We don't really remember "seven" numbers. We remember the first group of three and then the other grouping of four numbers. If it is long distance, then we add an area code. So we actually remember 10 numbers by breaking it into groups of three. Social Security numbers work on the same principle, consisting of 3 groups of numbers. Obviously such number systems are designed to help people remember the important numbers in their lives.

Passage Two
Questions 11 to 15 are based on the passage you have just heard.

Script:
Laboratory studies have shown that we experience our dreams during a type of sleep called Rapid Eye Movement, or REM sleep. During REM sleep the brain is very active, the eyes move back and forth rapidly under the lids, and the large muscles of the bo

dy are relaxed. REM sleep occurs every 90 to 100 minutes, 3 to 4 times a night. The final REM period may last as long as 45 minutes.

Some people have no difficulty in remembering several dreams, whereas others recall dreams only occasionally or not at all. Nearly everything that happens during sleep, including dreams, is forgotten by morning. But sometimes a dream is suddenly remembered later in the day or on another day, suggesting that the memory is not totally lost but for some reason is very hard to obtain.

To remember your dreams, remind yourself that you want to do it before going to sleep. Keep a paper and a pen or a tape-recorder by your bedside. As you awaken, try to move as little as possible and try not to think right away about your upcoming day. Write down all of your dreams and images, as they can go away quickly if not recorded. If you can't remember a full dream, record the last thing that was on your mind before awakening, even if you have only a vague memory of it.

I remember when I was a kid, I read a story The Ugly Duckling. It was about a duckling who looked ugly and different from the others. So he was scorned by other animals. Even his family turned on against him. So he had to leave his home and met with all kinds of difficulties. But after all that, you know what happened.
That story has told me a lot. For one thing, good looking is not everything, and it certainly is not as important as inner beauty. It also makes me realize that life won't be smooth and it is full of frustrations for everybody. But no matter how difficult the situation looks like, one should never lose faith and then will become a beautiful swan.
